Phrantek - Innocence Lost (4th Level)
My track by track review....
1 simple things
Cool little organ intro, and the percussive elements and swirling synths are very nice indeed.
2 sunrise jazz
easily my favorite song, theres nice little piano touches and would be the perfect thing to wake me up along with a nice big cup o’ coffee!!!! I really dig the drum programming on this one too.
3 bella sera
Nice organ intro, and the dubby, echo-style percussion is a great addition as well. The mandolin/harpshicord sounds add to the vibe of the whole thing. Sweet!
4 inkling
This song takes me away to a far off place. If I close my eyes I feel I’m floating!
5 drifting
I Dig the dub influence and echo chamber bit. The synths are extraordinarily beautiful!
6 a turn for the worse
Stand up bass!! Just what I love to hear! Nice one. And the oceanic ambience in the background is another nice touch.
7 disenchant
The synths remind me of a hardcore dnb song, which is a cool thing for a downtempo song like this. Another nice dubby feel and the drums/percussion is programmed expertly with razor blade precision!!!
8 spiral down
Dope old school drum soundz. Something I can definitely flow over (if I was a rapper and stuff, hehe)… The melodies and synth sounds are very claustrophobic sounding, which is a good thing here considering the mood and feel of the track.
9 melancholia
The bass really shines in this one. The feel of this track is both spooky and relaxing all at the same time. A definite mood piece.
10 scars are forever
There is a definite dark feel to this track, mysterious and hauntingly beautiful. Not at all in a Portishead kinda way either!!!!
11 slitting wrists
An inventive sounding beat which sounds basic at first but then gets more complex as the song goes, with some weird/spooky sounds thrown in for good measure. Defintely a song to evoke a mood of Lonliness and despair. This track would be perfect in a black and white movie film noir soundtrack.
12 fade away
Beautiful piano and nice drum sounds with a bad ass synth bassline. A perfect ending to a sublime piece of work by Phrantek!
All in all I can say this stuff is totally original and unique, not sounding like any thing else I have ever heard. It may be a reason I didn’t like it the first time, (which I told Andy soon afterwards listening), it sure has grown on me the next couple of times hearing it. Not being a producer myself, but a fan and lover of music, I can truly say that this is a unique work of art, and something that I cannot say sounds like anything else (something I usually do when I listen to new stuff)…. Thanks for the cd, and showing me another side of yourself. One of these days I’ll make a track! This stuff is evindence enough of me to get on it! |
