Who still cuts dub plates?
I was going through my old records the other day and found a bunch of my old dubs and realized how long it's been since I cut one.
Who on here still does? And why, be it tradition, you like the feel, you like the sound, ect.
* I originally posted this in the ragga forum, but thought we'd be a better dicussion on the main one. |

Re: Who still cuts dub plates?
whats the cheepest you can cut a dub for.... i've seen around 80 bucks.
i also hear the life of a dub is about 50 plays (that was years ago, not sure if it's gotten better) |

Re: Who still cuts dub plates?
oscar cuts 12" lites (like a rec, no metal, still acetate, no difference in sound quality) for $50. dubs do deteriorate after a while but there isn't a certain # of plays...i don't know anyone whose counted. |

Re: Who still cuts dub plates?
I still cut dubs...Richard does a 2 sided 10" for $35. I do it because it isn't a dubplate if its not on accetate hence the label "DUBPLATE", But that's just my opinion. Yeah it would be easier to play tracks off a cd but whats the fun in that???? |

Yo I've got a dub we made from 97 that has stood the test of time. Although it does not get canned, we do drop it a few times a year.

i cut some of the first tunes i ever wrote on my roland sp808 groovebox. i still have em. they're probably from 97'-99'. i might break out a few of em at the producers showcase next sun just for the sake of nostalgia. |

Re: Who still cuts dub plates?
We still cut thru Oscar, $50 a plate for the long lasting ones... as long as the weight of the needle isn't pushing so hard on it they can last... We cut cause its a bitch hookin a laptop etc. and playin thru that, or we just rock it live. |

Re: Who still cuts dub plates?
You know what I have the original tape in which that remix came out on. It was a white tape, it also had this track called "All For Nothing" and a few others. I made my own remix of the Dawn Penn original a while ago too. Just recently I mashed it up on my new mix...check it

Re: Who still cuts dub plates?
LOL!! I have a 12" plate of that tune also Tez!!!
I cut like 6 10" plates for Miami last year, and they all sound as good as we could master em ourselves, Oscar always hooks it up a likkle in Pro-tools.
I must say I prefer the 12" Lites, sound is great, better than the 10"s, and they are much more manageable on the decks, these def seem to last longer than the 10" plates.
After playing our tunes on CD, Serato etc, and Dubplate, I feel the Dub delivers the closest to what an actual VINYL pressing would sound like. . .which is where I hope you would want your choon to end up ultimately. . .

Re: Who still cuts dub plates?
12" is better over 10" not b/c of the material but b/c of the size. the closer you get to the center, the s**ttier it sounds. and if yur tune is over 6min, the grooves need to be cut skinnier in order to fit it on a 10 and most likely @ 33 1/3 vs. 45 wich is better b/c there is more space between the grooves. a 12' standard acetate sounds the same as a 12" light. it's the same material except the lites don't have metal on the inside.
note: it's a good idea to let the engineer know when yur bass drops so he can open up the grooves and close the grooves a bit when the bass goes away. |
