get ready to react as expected

What you want productions gotta thing coming up in the forrest around LA somewhere- 50+ Djs on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of June.

Funny enough to my knowledge, no well known LA Djs are on that list...

The cold question: "Is it that once you think you're the best, you feel anything that the lesser knowns put on isn't good enough for you?"

I'm actually entitled to ask this question by some that may remain annonymous- but are not affiliated with the upcoming show. The answers recieved are the product of a philisophical argument on going about the "DJ" scene in general: There is a steriotype floating around between House/Break/Drum n Bass FANS;

LA's DJs are stuck up, SDs DJs are cold business oriented, and SFs DJs are driven by "good times" and getting f**ked up. I don't mean to instult anyone unless you are under the age of 20, or still go to highschool.

thanks for the "troll" visit, hahaha. I'm sure some answers will arise that will be professional in format.

reputation speaks volumes, people get burnt enough times, they rather stick to a sure shot than take a chance on something.

if im not down with any artists on a flyer or anybody involved with a party there's zero chance of me going. nothing to do with politics or feelings of superiority, i've just been to enough s**t parties i learned to stop taking chances on stuff. so i might miss some dope ones, chances are i'll miss more crappy ones.

Re: get ready to react as expected

unifire- I think your answer pretty much sticks up for the majority- I'll use it in a conversation the next time I hear the topic come up. I've said it before, but 1 DJ has no creadibility.

A lot of unknown DJs have this vibe like: "no one gives me an even chance to play just because people go to see names they can trust." Which is where I think this whole philosophy came from.

Honestly, I think that problem other DJs have just comes from promoters being weary of having a DJ play, and not being able to pay a DJ that expects pay. I think some should consider playing for free if it helps their reputation with crowds.

But there's a lot of reasons FANS could've suggested it too- I could go on for a while.

put in work, do something different, join the boys club and play the game...

climb your way up and make it happen or shhhhhh....

hustle or dont. its that simple. nothing is based on talent alone.

my opinion. and generalizing the djs by county/city is silly. stop it mang!!

WTF? lol

Maybe you should go BACK to high school so that you can learn how to spell 'insult'

and then realize what an insulting statement it is to generalize an entire city of DJ's that have made the scene what it is and provided the opprotunity for growth, which you are riding the coat tails of.

i believe your friends who choose to remain 'anonomous' were smart in the sense of not making a retarded statement addressed to a scene which you want to make good in. kinda shootin yourself in the foot there guy.

Re: get ready to react as expected

Well, you reacted as expected... But don't forget, I've only gone to the couple of DnB shows in LA- one at Caseys in the downtown, and been to Ruby Sky in SanFran, and the bay, and beach house partys, and etc... this is just an interesting topic, because you might as well be pointing the finger at all the people that have been talking s**t on you. I support the jungle scene, and the turntablist scene, I'm a proud junglist, and I'm playing at the up coming LA show. Most of the flack about all of this actually came from LA. Men and Women saying things like, "High school doesn't stop in LA." or "They have there little click going on, and shove other people off."

All if this is good for you to know, not me, the supporter. I hope maybe you could consider the fact that I'm giving you a low down of some bad things that may effect the outcome of your scene, and you could take them in a positive direction.

if not, then react as expected. hahaha.

Re: get ready to react as expected

According to hyenadj ...
**********

Well, you reacted as expected...

- if you're assumptions about "our" reaction towards your post was correct, and the fact that you supposedly knew how "we" would feel about this topic b4 you even posted the question, then why do you feel the need to educate "us"? if you already know the answer to your question, isn't that enough for you or are you just looking for attention?

-------------------

But don't forget, I've only gone to the couple of DnB shows in LA- one at Caseys in the downtown, and been to Ruby Sky in SanFran, and the bay, and beach house partys, and etc...

- so you went to a "few" shows and a "few" people said some ignorant words to you so that gives you the green light to generalize the behavior of everyone single one of us in this community...to question our efforts as to whether or not they are valid? i geuss you would jump off the brooklyn bridge too if someone told you that.

-------------------

this is just an interesting topic, because you might as well be pointing the finger at all the people that have been talking s**t on you.

- well i don't find it interesting and obviously the lot of us on here don't either and considering you already knew that that would be everyone's reaction to your statement, then what is the point to all this? the only person pointing the finger right now is you.

-------------------

I support the jungle scene, and the turntablist scene, I'm a proud junglist, and I'm playing at the up coming LA show.

- this post really shows your support? you are discrediting the efforts of others who actually do things...how is that supportive?

-------------------

Most of the flack about all of this actually came from LA. Men and Women saying things like, "High school doesn't stop in LA." or "They have there little click going on, and shove other people off."

- who is getting flack? who are these people you speak of? click? as far as i'm concerned, this community is FAMILY to me. we work together and support each other's endevours and your awareness message in the form of an internet post based on ignorant pre-conceived notions will not change that...

-------------------

All if this is good for you to know, not me, the supporter. I hope maybe you could consider the fact that I'm giving you a low down of some bad things that may effect the outcome of your scene, and you could take them in a positive direction.

- so it's our scene...not yours too? i thought you want to be a part of this? whose asking for you to give "us" the low-down buddy? these are facts? and a supporter does not assume negative things and point blame towards others.

-------------------

if not, then react as expected. hahaha.

- again..if you expected this reaction, what is the point in all this? do we need a meeting in the town circle to discuss these issues that plague our scene? i have a podium you can stand on. want me to bring it?

Re: get ready to react as expected

In alot of ways I agree with hyenadj.

Most of you who post here are already friends, or are friends of friends.

But hyenadj is coming from an outside perspective looking in on the scene. I think we should take his words with more than just a grain of truth.

Personally, I agree with him and could provide a long list of L.A. dj's that I think are very stuck up. I can also provide an equally long list of dj's who are not. But it seems to me, that the bigger a dj gets, the more stuck up and self righteous they become.

Now, this is where it gets a bit tricky. I believe some of these dj's are stuck up to begin with, and some of them become jaded from the scene and kind of turn stuck up. As for me, I will admit to becoming the later.

In my opinion something about this scene turns people jaded and angry rather quickly. And I can definitely see how hyenadj can have the opinions that he does.

JS has a ton of large local dj's that post here, so it is to be expected that people are going to get put on the defensive before actually taking the time to hear (not just listen) to what hyenadj is saying.

I know a ton of you personally. We have hung out at my house, at your house, at parties. And I still feel the same way as hyenadj. So I don't think you can all just write it off as he doesnt know what he is talking about.

Take some time to hear his words. It might just change the way you conduct yourself.

And ya ya ya, I'm not part of the scene anymore. So I don't want to hear that. But many of the reasons why I am not in the scene anymore is because of the same things hyenadj is saying here right now.

Re: get ready to react as expected

No matter your love or discontent for the scene or dnb you can't change other people. People are who they are and when you spend time worrying about what other people are doing you will do nothing but make yourself crazy. You are the only person you can change. If other people's attitudes and actions bother you let it go and do your thing or find a new thing. Surround yourself with people who don't irritate you and try not to harbor resentment for the people who piss you off. It only makes you look ugly and gives them free publicity.

Being part of a "scene" makes it fundamentally impossible to separate yourself from other people in the scene entirely. The first thing to learn as an out-of-the-bedroom Dj besides beatmatching is that everyone in the scene is connected. Its just not that big. To generalize an entire scene by a few parties or people isn't fair and those parties and people are about .007 degrees of separation from the parties and people you associate with. So if you want to make a career as a Dj don't s**t where you eat.

As far as promoters not booking no-names ... the market is compleatly saturated. If you want to play you need to make yourself something that puts you above the rest. Promoters may love the music but they can't do s**t if no one comes to their shows and they lose money. Its only smart for them to put people that will bring in heads to their shows. Its gonna take years of playing at 9:00 for you to get a decent slot. Do that s**t like the Whiskey and start bringing your own crowd when you do get to play. The promoters will notice when there are 60 people in the club at 9:30. But of course .... you have to manage to not piss people off for them to support you.

Re: get ready to react as expected

adam i feel ya. but if we all let the actions of others deter us from achieving our own goals and achieving happiness in our lives, no one would do anything and we'd all be miserable. this is not just about dnb. it's life in general. u can complain about s**t or you can do something about it like mel says.

and as far as i'm concerned, if this guy really believes the s**t that he's saying, and he lets that affect his motivation and level of interest in drum and bass, then he doesn't really love drum and bass. and the last thing we need is people who aren't willing to make an effort on their own accord to make s**t happen for the better of our scene which he supposedly cares soo much about.

and to say that if something isn't done about it the scene will crumble like we're talking about global warming or something is f**kin bulls**t...i've been spinning since i was 15, played out of state when i was 18 and im 29 now. the industry moves in waves. we hit slumps and we hit highs and i'm not just talking about the la scene b/c i've played in almost every major city in this country and have dealt w/ label bosses, agents, promoters...managed my own business in this. treking the hustle bustle FOR MYSELF AND THE LOVE OF THIS MUSIC for close to 14 years. i'm constantly feeling the need to re-invent myself as an artist in order to stay afloat. and yea i have s**t to bitch about. it ain't all gravy. but i have NO ONE to blame but myself if i feel i am not suceeding in my life goals as they pertain to drum and bass.

so s**t or get off the pot man! cuz in the jungle scene, motherf**kers hold it down for our own and we help eachother out. like lauren said, there are individuals who have laid the foundation on which you are looking to build on. you must respect that. it's a small industry so that's how it works. if you can't bring something positive to the table, than we can't break bread.

and for the record, my time behind the decks is worth something. if i do not recieve monetary compensation for a show that has the budget to do so, than i have no respect for myself as an artist and therefore, i cannot count on a promoter to have respect for me if that be the case. and that does not mean that i won't play a show for free bc/ i do and i will continue to.

drum and bass is life. respect life.

so hyena..instead of barking up the wrong tree, maybe you should look inwards and ask yourself...how much do you respect drum and bass and the artists who make it what it is?

Wow.

you guys didn't like what I had to say at all.

And I expected that, it hurts to hear the truth, huh. Well I said I was on your side, but I don't think that matters as much as getting 2 play records, rather than making you guys happy.

I thought I was helping you by being informal, and unifire answered my question. Do I think what people say as true... I don't know. I can kind of see there point, but it's just flack...

Are you Okay? Sorry... I guess I hit you a little too hard with that one; it's okay. see. I've got my own fan base apperantly.

But check it, man, words are words. I'm done here. it was interesting to say the least. Now you go see it for yourself... if it's real. that's all that matters, right?

peace out. I forgive you.

Re: get ready to react as expected

I'm playing and I'm a super star!! Just ask my mum.

According to hyenadj ...

What you want productions gotta thing coming up in the forrest around LA somewhere- 50+ Djs on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of June.

Funny enough to my knowledge, no well known LA Djs are on that list...

Re: get ready to react as expected

lol
reactions?
its more ike you need justification for how you feel?

we are not pissed, we just laugh at ignorant statements such as "LA djs are stuck up"

and when you say s**t like that, it makes you look petty and no one respects you

if bringing out the truth makes you feel justified with how you view the scene, I'd say stop preachin to the choir because no one really cares

am i mad? yes, im f**kin pissed about my $400 phone bill, but not this

I just wish you could come down to Orange County, maybe you can make genearlizations and stereotypes about my peeps like u did LA

lol
