Up and coming MC battle??

So we've been tossing around the idea of putting on a MC battle on the next kombat...judged, Mc's get round's, and a couple shots...


FYI, Dino, Dre and XYZ...are not invited... as...well I was kinda hoping to get them to judge..lol


but what do you all think..no it's not an 8 mile stand off type thing, I'm thinking like 15 min rounds, judged on lyrical content, clarity, crowd hype and overall style

what do you think? who would you want to see on there...

maybe i dont know enough mc's in this scene,but i cant think of anyone in particular...
isnt that weird?
would it be just an mc competition or would you be down to incorporate a little bit more to the show?

j-tec, bypass, jyro, ld, deco comprehension, ridda, and repete is a start. hell, i'd want to have dino, xyz and dre up in that as well. why the heck not? also, let the mc's pick out who their dj will be so that the 15mins pon de mic is at a full optimal level. all the skills each mc possesses will be showcased proper. this would be a historic night for SoCali dnb if done right, and in my humble opinion would only help strengthen the scene more out here in SoCali....

I'll second that on Red October, and would also like to throw the homie Poisn in the ring too.

Kemst should definetly judge too, if not he should be entered in the competition.

i would think the mc's bring their dj of choice...it would make the competition well worth the money to see so many figureheads all together for one night of some friendly competition. the place would be packed and out the door guaranteed. def would love to see kemst as a judge. spend a lil $ and bring out armanni reign as a judge as well...

Good idea, to show the versatility of the MC's the dj should be randomly picked. If you allow them to practace with there favorite dj then its not really a battle but a recital And why should the 3 aforementioned Mc's be discluded? IMHO there are alot of MC's out there who are equal if not better than them but just aren't as high up in the dnb monarchy. This battle should be open to all.

THIS SHOULD BE DONE OVER HIP HOP, WITH ONE DJ PLAYING WHATEVER INSTROS HE CHOSES.

Please make it freestyles and not have people just reciting verses. You could do something like throw topics on a video screen and have them rhyme with it. That would be way more interesting and innovative than just having them do the same thing they do every time they mc in a battle structure. imo

you can still have an mc choose their dj and still throw up topics on a screen for the mc to spit a freestyle to...

we have to many mc's that spit blabber over whoever is on the decks and there is no teamwork, no real flow and groove. perhaps to show a lil teamwork let them choose the dj they feel comfortable spitting rhymes with cuz they know the dj's style and technical tricks and programming. IMHO =)

to answer your Q, bypass, i feel that many an mc pick up the mic and spit for the sake of spitting, bleeding over vocals in tracks and over parts of tracks that perhaps shouldn't have any lyrics spit. know the tunes and how the dj spins em, therefore not just showing off your lyrics and style as an mc, but also showing off the cohesiveness between the mc and his dj, which i find very, very lacking in dnb at times.

take armanni reign w/ Mason, for example. there's a mix where he spits his lyrics, dancing around the vocals in the tune and coming up with what sounds like a whole new tune with him spitting live with those vocals already incorporated. you will say its planned, and that's true, but it shows cohesiveness that i feel would bring more to the table with more crowd appreciation. thus more of a pull to win a dnb mc showcase, since it's not a hiphop mc battle, right?

when i see mc's live, sometimes it sounds as though they are battling the sound and not even caring what they are rhyming to, as long as there's a dnb beat. i just wanna hear more maturity on the mic from an mc when im at a show. 9 times out of 10 im still ogin to the show for the music first, then what the mc has to add to the atmosphere of the party.

im an oldskool hiphop head, and would love to hear some great content with some quality control in this showcase. maybe im alone in this, but it's just my opinion anyways. i'll still go to this battle, and enjoy what comes out of it. i look forward to reading what the rules will be for this, and hope to hear some great, planned creativity =)

I agree with you that most mc's cant hold their own. yes. and armani and mason is a great example of the mc/dj relationship.

so if it read up and coming dj/mc showcase my approach would be different.

i think showcases are gay. might as well just make it a party and book some mc's on the lineup and have time slots.

but if there is going to be a "battle" make it one.

trust, i know who you are. i've come to check you out when you first came out. was quite enjoyable.

im just an old dog in his 30's who's been enjoying this music and loving it since i was still in highschool. i'll always be a fan first b4 being a dj and you'll still see me on the dancefloor with arms not folded with a smirk on my face when i hear something that moves my soul~

like stated above...i look foward to this event and to see how it pans out. should be a great night of artistic expression pon de mic.

and yes,i too do not want this to be like some "8 Mile" bs.
my question is how do you really put on a dnb mc battle?
how is it going to be judged?
bcuz if the well-knowns get thrown into this mix we already know the crowd is gonna react to them more,it's just a given.
seriously what would the rules of conduct really be?
i think i just gave myself a headache...

To have an MC battle, it has to be RAW.
Face 2 Face dissing, and word games.
One of the most important traits of an mc is thinking on the spot, improv.
And i think judges should be judging on Style, Crowd interaction, And actual Comprehension with whats being said.

Enouf said i nominate my self as an up and comming MC, i can say that topics would be good but most MC's can come up with there own topics, a true Emcee can deplict, distrort, hype, articulate, and enjoy the music he is mcing for... let DINO and XYZ and ?marK jugde it and there wouldent be a real judgement , let the crowd judge it, as for DJ, if it is a battle it should be 15 mins of one track they the MC brought that a DJ could spin, just plan DNB beat with lyrical content, i already know what i would choose, sooooo is this a delima to throw other wise i am ganna trow it. BOH
