Re: which dj's prefer emcees?
i'll turn off those who spit over my set if they do not ask me first or if i have never worked w/ them b4.
i prefer having someone who i have worked w/ in the past and optimally only one mc unless of course it's two people i have worked w/ b4 such as re:pete b2b xyz
in addendum:
i think i would much rather have an mc @ a rave or large scale event and not have one @ a smaller liquidy type spot. only bc @ a rave u need that voice for extra representation b/c you're prolly far from the crowd. where as in a more intimate setting, people tend to wanna watch the dj.
then again like i said b4, if it's someone i'm used to rocking out w/ he / she would know how to handle w/e situation we are in.

From what I've seen, the dj's who prefer an mc on stage with them, usually have someone with them. Just look at a majority of the "big name" dj's that get booked WITH their own mc. |

^^^^^hahahahaha!!!
not gonna get too indept with this subject, but im down for any mc to spit over my sets as long as they're feeling out the vibe and flowing with it. i.e. not spitting over vocal tracks or shouting at the top of there lungs.
I honestly think enough time has passed and drum n bass mcs have been involved long enough to know what to do and what not to do.
I always encourage each mc to be as original as possible before anything else. |

Ive played original vocal tunes and even after telling them im playin an original vocal tune they still rip over the vocals.
THAT SHIT IS ANNOYING!!!
But most mc's ive worked with know whats up so i dont have any complaints.

Re: which dj's prefer emcees?
i agree with joe on that
there are mc's that know they can mc for me anytime im djing, they dont even need to ask (im not gonna turn this into a popularity contest, they know who they are).
other mc's respectably come up and ask if they can flow over my set. sometimes ill say yes and sometimes ill say no, no disrespect meant if i say no, it just depends on different things.
the thing that does bug me is when someone ive never seen or heard mc before (which most of the time is a random) just grabs the mic without asking. thats when ill turn the mic off. or someone randomly from the crowd starts barking that they wanna use the mic when im in the middle of a mix. i have nothing against people working on their skills, i respect people who are trying to do something, but there are ways to go about it.
you dont see upcoming/bedroom djs walk up to an established dj or uk headliner with a crate of records asking to go b2b, do you?

Re: which dj's prefer emcees?
to a certain extent i agree with deco on this. i wouldnt put all mcs into that statement tho. there are mcs out there who have worked really hard to find a style of their own (stamina and dynamite for example). but when i hear 3-4 mc's on stage at the same time and they all sound the same thats just not fun haha.
i think that we are very lucky to have a diverse and very talented group of mcs here locally in socal. they work hard day in and day out to keep pushing themselves and always trying to up their own game.
sure, there are those who just imitate and use styles they see other mcs getting booked for, but the promoters/djs/other mcs see that and it kinda serves as "quality control". |

Re: which dj's prefer emcees?
I am the biggest Hyper D fan, know about 10 of his lyrics by heart, but it is funny (not talking to anyone on this thread, just talking) because HYPER D chatted ALL THE TIME. I see people say 'man i like when a MC shuts up', but have u heard HYPER D on mixes, he is forever chatting. I love it cause he switches it up (he can do hip hop timing flow, chat fast, sing, hype, call, triplets etc.). Also HYPER was the greatest MC in part because he also got to rock in the greatest era of music for dnb MCs to chat, The Jump Up Era! When it was a sample buildup (usually hip hop or something like "watts riots" or "i live by the funk and die by the funk" or "baaaaadassssss") and then drops into a repetitive bassline aka OL' SKOOL JUMP UP. The music was minimal and was open and allowed for chatting all over it. Today's dnb the producers got more musical with it, most USA producers do it dark with rough sounds and stabs and screeches and even UK Jump Up has like triple the musical elements then say "the ding dong bass" or like an ol skool Aprhoditie or Dope Dragon tune so a MC just chatting forver sounds bad (that is why i can't listen to too many UK live sets anymore). Again I am the biggest Hyper D fan in the world but that era was also golden for MCs to seriously do their thing on end non-stop. The only dnb i listen to with mcs on it nowadays are if it is a fellow stateside mc on it or my ol skool tapes/cds when like Andy C was dropping jump up with like Hyper, MCMC, Skibba, Det, 5-0, Ragga-D (points if u know what he is known by now) on it. There was so much space in the music for these dudes to let loose and really get lyrical on it, but yeah HYPER top'd them all because he had lyrics, he had some of the best wit, he was hyper, but he also was so about having a good time and the music.
In dnb MCs will always take a backseat to the DJs (which is good imo), but there is a huge contingent of people who really like DnB MCs and a lot of people who honestly don't feel dnb unless there is an MC. We may think they are not "heavily invested in the music enough to know that it is about the music and not the MC", but like all musics there are people into it on different levels (and as a mc i ain't complaining). I also have heard some extremely boring sets that were make exciting by MCs. MCs have a super short leash in DnB, but i love that challenge of having to be in top form every single show, it makes actually being a DnB MC something you really want to do. I mean seriously i think all it takes is one bad performance for a once fan of you (as a MC) to have doubts. I have heard/seen everyone from Andy C on down have a bad nite but are still given the benefit of the doubt, but i have seen/heard of a MC having an off nite and *flushes toilet*.
Plus look at the demands on dnb mcs, everyone knows the art of MCn' from hip hop, but then since it is dnb everyone wants the MC to be dnb and not hip hop, but then they want the MC to have lyrics like a good hip hop mc (say something deep or clever), but then wants them to hype the crowd like a hype man, but then wants them to shut up but then wants them to have prescene on stage, but not to hog any of the DJs shine. I mean seriously sit back and think about that and on top of that at least American MCs are compared to UK MCs who have careers of this. A "C list" MC in the UK still can live off of this in the UK while a "A list" MC can get over a thousand pounds per show and play like 1-8 shows a week if they are on their grind...the demands are ridiculous, but again for myself i LOVE that challenge. I personally love trying to do all of that in a show on top of a DJs set which is totally improvised and i have no clue what he/she is going to do on the decks.
I personally never go to shows to see a MC (the only ones i would are Tali [next week at Respect], Dynamite, Deeizm, Conrad), but i do know in LA the MCs we have i have heard some for years and i am still not tired of them, they still get me excited at a massive down to clubs and i ain't saying this cause they are my piers or whatnot, but personal truth. They have enhanced many many sets and continually do so and i continue to feel them. I could go out 3 str8 nites and hear Repete or Dino or ? or J-Tec or Dre or Kemst etc. and honestly on the third day i would not be turned off or annoyed by any of them. That is how good our MCs are now in LA imo. I mean i remember seeing MC ? and Kemst and John Dada and wanting to do that. I remember hearing about a MC named Dre outta the OC and first hearing him when we tagg'd at Vibeflow and being blown away. I remember when i first heard Decco and Skyler Mic and was like "damn these dudes lyrics are so sick and probably flying above so many people's heads right now", i remember at like EDC 2001 or something first seeing Dino and like floored at his crazy ass timing, or first rocking with Repete and like 'yeah he's good' and now i rock with him and am like 'man step yo game up Chris, he just killed u on that last flow' cause Pete is highly rated in my book, i remember seeing Bypass first at a house party with Fredknot on the decks and he was bustin' some lyrical s**t that had me smilin' and so on and so on or when i first went to Kokrete Jungle and was like yooo Micah9, Busdriver, PEACE, Phoenix are on some crazy ass next level s**t. To even be considered a good USA MC u have to go thru a crazy ass gauntlet of criticism/hate/doubt so i give props to anyone who has stuck it thru from Armanni to Sharpness to Colonel to Messian to Astro to Enemy etc. each of whom i have heard/played with/seen many times and are never tired of hearing them. All i all this rant was pointless by me, ha.

Re: which dj's prefer emcees?
AMEN to Stevie Hyper D (RIP)....there are tapes I have heard that under no uncertain circumstances are the BEST examples of MCing over DnB (hell ANY type of music) that I honestly have EVER heard.
I'm personally not a fan of too many rapid fire MCs (there's a few out there I like, like my cousin Dino & this cat named Bobby Riddla from the UK), but generally speaking, I like cats that can mix it up and keep it funky and bring an element of soul to what they're doing...
Over the years of MCing @ Konkrete Jungle, Direct Drive, Camoflage, Phuturo, WMC and other events across the country, the one thing I will say for the "up n coming" MCs is that they need to understand a) it's not as easy as it looks b) you have to connect not only with your DJ but the crowds in front of you and c) know when to let it breathe and let the track rock (granted when the track is DOPE and the crowds are rockin out, it's easy to forget this one)...
You can't just "think" you're dope and expect to get the mic and rock for a DJ...that s**t takes YEARS of honing your craft and understanding all of the dynamics that go into makin a great performer...your voice is just like any other instrument, it takes practice and dedication to become a virtuoso.....so please don't take it as a sign of disrespect when either a DJ or the MC on the mic asks you to fall back in the cut and let us do our thing...be hungry, stay humble and work hard and you will end up on stage right next to us , rockin your style...
And for the DJs out there that wanna hate on MCs etc...it's hard sometimes to get in sync with a DJ we've never worked with before, but on the real...man, it's symbiotic relationship...we're as much there for your benefit as ours cuz there's been plenty of parties I have been to where there's no MC and either ended up leaving wondering who the hell the DJ was or feeling like there was something lacking in the show (even the dopest DJ can be boring sometimes when no MC is present)....so, if someone that's on the mic is gettin outta hand, a simple nod or visual cue will normally get a seasoned MC to give you the space you want/need to do your thing...
OK...I'll get off my soapbox now and let the flames begin.. ;-P |

I was gonna stay out of dis one...but fuk it....
No offense to any emcee's out there...you all are doin' your ting and I respect that.
Y'all know who I prefer....and this is why.
J-TEC is my mc for two reasons the energy that he brings and the chemistry that we have together. Johnny and I get together on a regular basis working on new s**t. As a dj that get's on the mic himself, he knows what i'm gonna do. Which tracks i'm gonna spit on and sing on and I know what he's gonna do and what we're gonna do together when it comes to our hooks and flows...all due to practice. When Maximum Moves is on stage we are puttin' on a performance...whether it's coreographed with our dancers or just us doing what we've rehearsed.
That being said...when it's just myself booked any mc is welcomed to bust on the mic...but if i'm not feelin' it, i'll say...."next"
Peace and maximum respect,

Re: which dj's prefer emcees?
I think everyone is satisfied when the MC put's as much skill and flow into there rhymes as the producer did with the track there busting over. When I say flow, I'm not talking about the rhymes...I'm talking about does it flow with the music.... do you hear the MC?, do you hear the DJ?... when it all comes down to it, you should just be hearing music. Two elements perfectly harmonized to create a work of art.... and that work of art sole intention is to make people move. Not just some over amped, ear piercing, cluster f**k. Knowing when to bust, how loud to bust, how many bars to bust....knowing what kind of lyrical content will work well with this DJ and venue. The list goes on, but allot of the time MC fall short of meeting many of these. How many times have you gone to see your favorite headliner... you paid 20 bucks, your excited as hell!! then you show up and they throw some local MC on stage with him. the two have never meet, they don't know each others skills, styles, and vibe AND IT SHOWS. For a proper set, you need to have perfect harmonization.

Re: which dj's prefer emcees?
So "Trench" are u in essense saying that if u (a mc) never have met a UK DJ u should not play with him because u happen to be a local??? Does it matter not if they (the DJs) are from the USA or only the UK? What about local DJs?
if a promoter putz trust (by "throwing on some local MC") in a MC to perform with a UK DJ then isn't that the same trust they give to a local DJ opening for that DJ to play a great set? Is the entire night of pleasure a give or take of how much money you spent? What if it were a free party would it be okay for a local MC to play with a UK DJ that they "never met"? Don't you feel that as DJs graduate and get better with their skills AND in the view of the public (like promoters used to have them opening up nites, now they are opening up for UK acts or headlining on their own) the same can be said for MCs? or because a MC never has met or played with a DJ the MCs ceiling is always performing with those he has always performed with? that is so limiting imo, but again my rants are pointless...ha |

Re: which dj's prefer emcees?
I used to despise MC's over my set back in the day, when I first started... then I moved to LA and it all changed. Before moving here the only cat I really respected on the mic was Dino (back in the Denver days, where I started going to shows). When I got down here 4 years ago and really heard the talent that these dudes were bringin, it changed my opinion. You can pay attention to the lyrics and get something outta it, or just ride the vibe they create. For the most part all of the MC's Ive worked with down here know when to hold em and when to fold em, so to speak. When to rockit and when to hold back, when to hype it and when to get a drink. Mad respect to LA MCs, and I used to shut off ANY mc who tried to get on my sets back in the day...
And Kempst is the f'in man when it comes to Dubstep. Good all around, but he really shines at 140bpm with the spaceman flow. If you havent been to Pure Filth and heard him on the mic, its worth going just for that... |

I remember when i saw 6Blocc at Pure Filth with Kemst on the mic i was in awe.
I turned to Pawn and said "Kemst sounds really really good over dubstep"

According to werdmc ...
just curious?
**********
No, I think there's more Dj's besides just Curious that like emcees but..
In answer to the question, it's most likely that the dj's which prefer emcees are ones who like for the crowd to know who it is they are; that is of course if the emcee is doing his job. That was the original job of the emcee, remember?
footnote:
Emcees like IC3 rule not only for their stage presence, but because they know who it is they're emceeing for, they know the names of the tunes, the producers of the tunes being played and they let the crowd know it by singing/rhyming along with the melody in time - all emcees should be adept in these areas, period.

Re: which dj's prefer emcees?
oh yea and the emcees should go thru the board if possble, not the mixer. some reasons for this are sound quality, better eq for the mic on the board, less hand bumping-into action between the dj and mc (you know what we're sayin') and of course you can plug several mics into the board as opposed to 1 or 2 on the mixer which leads me to the final thought on this topic ( i think)..
MC's - B.Y.O.M.
BRING YOUR OWN MIC!
why grasp n fight over one mic - I just dont get it.. DJ's buy records, cd's cdj;s tables, and cases to hold all of these things in.. Do like Conrad & MC? bring a case with at least one mic and really you all should get wireless systems with a rack pramp (with dynamic delay bbe compressor etc.)
C'mon go all out - you're the MC!
BIG up all the vocalists doin' their thang, you know we love workin with you all.

Re: which dj's prefer emcees?
That pretty much sums up what has turned me off of MC's so much the past few years in particular.
It's gotten to the point where as soon as I see an MC up there grabbing the mic I cringe. Probably this is because 99% of the time I'm at intimate shows at small venues, and yes I just shelled out a $20 to see a dj that I love and rarely/if ever get to see and yes I've been looking forward to this for weeks/months and holy s**t... I can't even tell what tracks they're playing, nvm feeling the music enough to start dancing.
There are a few very talented local MC's whose skills I respect alot... Deco Comprehension comes to mind. Red October too. But honestly, I've had more bad experiences with "local" dnb MC's than positive ones. I have absolutely walked out of shows way earlier than planned because of the aural assault over what seems like a really fun set!
The flyer doesn't say "MC WHOEVER" in huge font and "w/ dj so-and-so" in small font underneath. That's because we're there to see the DJ play music. Sorry.
*********
According to trench ...
Re: which dj's prefer emcees?
I LOVE MAXIMUM MOVES! They're not just a DJ and and an MC it's like Jeremy said it's a "Performance!" and I love it! Well said Dip! Keep up the good work guys!
Oh and as for your q's Drew....it sounds like for most dj's, it really depends on the mc????
**********
According to dipvertigo ...
Peace and maximum respect,
Dip
