Cali Courtesy?

What is it about the scene out here, that members with no talent are supported to an insane degree? Been living here for 3 years now, and I am baffled by the amount certain artists are allowed to perform. Whenever I ask someone personally about said artists, I am told they agree with me, but then turn right back around and tell that artist how great he was. Is this connected to the infamous fake hollywood lifestyle? Please don't ask me to name names, as some of these people are very active on this site. Just some clarification, cuz seeing these fools over and over is really upsetting to someone who wants to see this scene grow even bigger and support the real talent in this great city!

Actually....why not use names? Your the attendee and promotors need to be listening to you.

Actually it doesn't matter....there is hardly any unity in the scene. Everyone backs up their homies. Theres a few of us here who unite.

from what i've been told it's people who put in the most support get showcased the most, especially if the crew they are supporting has been doing big things for awhile.

Re: Cali Courtesy?

I do throw events and support the scene when not working my real job... it's my passion. There's a ton of good talent spread across the different crews, and I've been really happy to see crews uniting here (more than the other 2 stateside scenes I participated in). So, why would this get deleted? I'm not trying to attack anyone, just want to hear different crews' points of view...

Re: Cali Courtesy?

I Think that everyone has their own opinion on who has talent and who doesn't.. and i've seen catz give props to artists they didn't like a lot of times, but sometimes i think it's because they wanna support, everybody has dreams, you know?

Although it is best to truly express how you feel about an artist to them,to their face.. instead of talkin bad about them behind their backs, because they all need criticism so that they can better themselves.

So yeah, with that said.. if you talk about an artists behind their backs, man up and just let them know what you think.. don't hide behind a message board, or front about it.

not talking s**t just saying if you wanna criticize tell them how you feel. DO IT RIGHT. (i know "promoters" would)

Re: Cali Courtesy?

I am not from LA but I think the scene out there is great. I have had great times when I have been out there. Homeboy who started this post does help in throwing parties and he is not exactly complaining. Its more of an issue with the onslaught of the MC's in your city. There are so many of them and the good ones do get props but the s**t ones seem to get more props because of their hand in throwing events. Its funny because the bigger dj's in the LA scene hate on some of these MC's but will never admit and let them go on ruining sets over and over again. The party kids give all sorts or props and it seems as if they have no clue what DNB MCing is really all about. Shit rhymes and rhyme schemes are still s**t. A dj has the ability to make up for s**t mixing skills with track selection. IF you suck as an MC you suck there is no hiding it. I just dont get why people are fake and allow whack ass MC's to go on doing injustice to ill dj's. I mean come on now you got Dre, Dino, Sezo one (NY misses you son), and a few others who do some dope s**t. But then you have the others who shouldnt be allowed on the mic and it is evident by the looks the headliners give them. I just think yall need to step it up and stop with politics and weed out the s**t and bring it back to propper MCing and djing. Not everyone needs to be in front of the curtain. IF your talent is putting together and throwing a night great it dont make you a dope performer.

Re: Cali Courtesy?

Wow, interesting the heated assault. I am not a noob, just avoid speaking my mind online often (one can see why). I am an honest and sincere person who does in fact speak my mind to people directly (would never say something behind your back I wouldn't say right to you), I'm just trying to grasp why the scene out here blows up the ego of certain artists, then tell me how much they suck. As a visual artist I take critique well, and would only offer mine constructively. That said, I get why crews book eachother (we do) and there are often alterior motives, but why do promoters hire people they actively hate-on? I won't shy from being jaded and/or a hater... but nobody has really answered my question. Are those peoplel courteous or just fake?

Re: Cali Courtesy?

There are also those who throw there own parties and wouldnt stand for a dj telling them to take a step back and not spit. Friends are friends and business is business if your friend sux let him know and dont feel obligated to book him. I am not a dj/producer/mc, but a huge jungle fan. I hate when a dope set is ruined by a whack MC. And making your own moves to give you a spotlight does not always translate into people wanting to hear more of a forced to hear you to get at the dj type scenario.

it doesn't mean they're gunna have them mc everytime.

Eveybody has a dream and should be able to express their talents..

Also i think the dj's would let you know if your mc'ing was bad, or just not have you emcee again if they didn't like the way you spit.

okay if u say "so and so DJ/MC" sucks or u believe they are only booked because of the company they keep, what is ur end result? Like wat would u like to happen?

Do u:

1) Not want them ever booked again?

2) Want the people to feel (if u could control wat people feel) that this person isn't "worthy" of whatever recognition they got?

3) Is it a case of you think people are better who should "replace" them?

i mean wat is ur ideal result?

Re: Cali Courtesy?

GOOD POINT! who cares.. it's all for the love of DnB anyways yo'

**********
According to mc.xyz ...

*i am hungover from last nite and just entertained, but...*

how is one's ego blown up out here? is it they feel like they are God on the decks? is it that they won't play unless for a certain fee? is it because they book who they feel and have the right to feel be it you agree with it or not?
?

i just don't understand, seriously and not being mean spirited or anything, why one would care? who cares. there are egotistical people in the world, we are not a utopia. there are shady people, cool people, dickheads, sluts, hoes etc. the same as in our scene itz just that we all like drum n bass. so at the end of the day who cares. u probably work with people with multiple personality traits as we all do? also i don't think "not telling to their face" is not "keeping it real". if u had to tell everyone every little thing you didn't like about them as artists or their clothes or how they act, ur whole life would be this. who cares. seriously, if i don't like a dj and i am at a show i don't feel like i am not keeping it real by not making my way to the front and telling them in their face like you got served or something. even if i turn to my boy and say "i ain't feeling this track selection" do i need to wait till itz over and go slam them. i just don't care i got other things to do. most people DON'T pay to go to shows to complain it is the nature of any live show so i don't know why one would expect it?

again u have the right to cirtique, hate, criticism, agree with, bigg up, jock, dick ride, hate on with a passion anyone, but if u get rebutted then u get rebutted, it really isn't that big of a deal.

*btw i am not trying to be snide or trite or anything with the tone or comment i wrote, i just have no time to edit. i never take anything online too seriously even s**t i write sometimes...

And it's widely known that a post like this on Junglescene only accomplishes a hundred or so posts, and that's about it.

I'm originally from NY, lived in D.C. 8 years and been residing in Hollywood the last 3 (Love being able to stumble home from the sickest parties stateside). My ideal result would be for those artists who lack any skill to step back and not keep grabbing the mic but I'm not stupid and would never actually expect that. At least I'd like my friends and scene associates to speak their minds to the talent. As for as the DJ saying something, my understanding is the DJ often can't hear the MC and/or is preoccupied trying to spin a dope set.

Re: Cali Courtesy?

No matter what politics will remain, Ive struggled with this topic for a really long time, including in the house scene during the mid 90's and ive learned to accept certain things, homeys support their homeys, promoters rub each others backs, top notch talent is not always booked, and mediocre talent is.

At first I thought as st1r did and would just throw my own parties and book who my crew and my homeys thought were the best talent and best fit for that particular party.

But now I think the best thing is to play along a bit with the politics just until youre in the middle and try and make the change from the inside out instead of just competing against everyone.

There are good and bad people in all the crews, if you judge the crew by one persons actions(or worse yet, internet comments) then youre not fighting politics, youre adding to them. That being said everyone has their right to an opinion and the worst part imho is that honesty is considered hate. If somone has a poor performance, ill let them know and i expect the same for my performance. In other words dont get butt hurt, just get better =) Express your opinions in the right way and maybe someone will listen. Ive said some things that were meant in a positive manner and were takin completely wrong, always think about what the person reading or listening is gonna take it and you will be better off.

All that being said, big up the I love LA parties, tons of drums, steel lions etc are brining the crews together, ive seen a positive impact on the la dnb scene because of this dnb sunday church if you will. You guys keep doin your thing, i can dig it!

Sometimes promoters have strategy behind their bookings.

I would imagine that whoever you are referring to has more to offer than just talent. I have no idea who you are talking about, but that booking probably results in a homie hook up on something, or perhaps they roll up with more people than you give them credit for, or they are a secret investor, or they have earned the respect of the promoter, or perhaps the promoter that you speak of might not personally like the artists style, but books them knowing that others do. Ever heard a track you didn't like and wonder why a crap tune got signed? Or ever wonder how that dude got that chick? One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Promoters usually don't book a s**tty artist because they suck, there is more likely an alterior motive behind the booking. Perhaps that artist has a connection that the promoter wants to reach. Chances are that if they are active in the scene and get a lot of bookings, the promoter has a vested interest in establishing a good working relationship for a multitude of reasons. The possibilities are endless as to why.

In an ideal world, all the artists that kick ass move to the top, and all the ones that suck stay off the decks and mics, but the world is more complicated than that, and venting about it won't change much. Just do your part, throw your events the way you want to, stand behind what you believe in, and hope for the best. If your heart's in the right place, people will see that and respect you for it.

Re: Cali Courtesy?

why does everyone get so offended?
that's the real question.
this person asked why people who lack skill continously get booked.
simple right?
got a few feed back answers.cool.
but then as usual snide remarks and power typing.
relax guys/gals.IT'S A PUBLIC FORUM.
i have asked this same question before to other people in the scene.
and i pretty much got same answers that have been posted.
i just can not get over people trying to act hard on here.
really i found it to be a genuine question.
yeah im sorry but certain people probably shouldnt be booked.but who cares right?
i'll still pay to go to these shows.i just go outside if there's an artist im not to found of.
i appreciate this site.
i appreciate the people that pour their blood, sweat and tears into what they do for this scene.
but i do not appreciate how many times people are not aloud to speak their minds in a constructive way.
yes i know that we all have our own idea of what constructive criticism is,but really is there a reason why people get so defensive?
