Dillinja-Warp Drive...blast from tha past

So, I was playing some of my older recs tonight and I pulled this tune out. It was the first dnb record I ever bought. I saw it on an ed rush & optical video from fabric on dnb arena. All I remember is this tune played first on the archive, the camera panned to the cover of the test recordings label which basically looked like this on camera:

but it was spinning.

Then the camera pans to the crowd and the tune drops and people go f**king bonkers.

I was looking to get into djing at the time and that video sealed the deal for the first record I would ever buy. I remember thinking 'this tune personifies all that dnb represents to me.'

With no tracklisting it took me 3 weeks of searching pictures of records on juno and chemical to find the cover that looked the same...then only a day to find the actual tune.

I was soooo excited when that record came in the mail. I remember opening the package, taking out the record and feeling like I was in junior high and just found a new girlfriend. lol.

Playing this tune again makes me feel those 'newness' emotions that I know everybody here has had at one point in time for this music. This tune is easily in my top 5 favorite dnb tunes of all time.

So I'm interested, dj's what was your first tune you bought/jacked/acqured and the surrounding story around it?

Re: Dillinja-Warp Drive...blast from tha past

Nice one! I love Dilly's old tunes. Im still lookin for a remix he did of 'Autumn' i believe original is from Die. used 2 hear it a bit round '98-00

-=-= My first memorable Vinyl shopping experience was in NYC, on vacation.

Satellite Rec. and Breakbeat science in NYC, i was abt 16.

Among a couple of ragga white lbl tunes , first memorable tunes i picked up were.. Konflict - 'Road Block/State of Mind' on Renegade Hardware, and of course Ed rush an Optical 'Wormhole' .

I flew from Vegas (my home twn) to NYC to see family, and picked up some heavy pressure - Vegas at the time had a couple stores (namely 'liquid 303') thou didnt carry the distro heat that NYC did at the time...

all the Test Recs were hot aswell but then there was a big break in releases and when the label came back I felt like it wasn't the same.No diss on Dillinja though just an opinion.

Re: Dillinja-Warp Drive...blast from tha past

First mixtape I ever heard was bought at Dr. Freeclouds mixing lab when it first opened up in Costa Mesa back in 95, the tape was Mixmag Live 15 with Jumping Jack Frost on one side and Randall on the flip. I have since owned every single record on that mix and still have the worn out tape. Classic...
http://www.discogs.com/release/41440

First jungle vinyl record I ever owned was Alex Reece "I want You" / "B-Boy Flavour" on Metalheadz at Aron's Records after seeing it and buying it on sight after seeing how cool looking the Metalheadz record label looked. Since then, I have owned every single record put out by Alex Reece and graduated to Peshay a few years later

Re: Dillinja-Warp Drive...blast from tha past

First drum & bass record I ever bought was Urban Takeover #1 with Drop-Top Caddy and Badass. I actually bought it as present for my roommate (but that meant i would get to play it too!) who got turntables a few months earlier than me (his were American DJs and the ones I got were nu-marks).

Another early record I remember buying was Rock The Funky Beats by the Natural Born Chillers, which I picked up at the local music shop - not even a record store.

I am pretty sure the Cracklabincalifornia record with the RAW and ODG remixes of Passin' Me By was pretty early on too.

Man, I had some fun mixin' those records (terribly!). haha.

Re: Dillinja-Warp Drive...blast from tha past

First record I ever bought was DJ Zinc - "Super Sharp Shooter" @ Grooveriders. I originally didn't even know how big that tune was when I picked it up, I just saw the weed leaf on the label and thought "well that looks cool, I like weed." So I gave it a whirl and fell in love with it. Not to mention that the flip "So Damn Fresh" is pretty sick too.

I was all about the old school jumpy stuff when I first started, now I got crates and crates of that ish.

I think Deacons "101 Ways To Kill Your Neighbor," 119 Crews "California Drum & Bass," and R.A.W.'s "Redrums" mixes are what sealed the deal for my love for jump up.

Yep, that was my favorite CD back in '97/98 ish. That and Heretic's "Fusion" the "Jungle Classics" and "Live From Tokyo" mixes. Also Deacon's "101 Ways to Kill Your Neighbor", "In One Ear Out Your Mother", Danny the Wildchild's "Zig Zag", and "Curve." Devas "Redline" - "Tourette and Bass" and a few others from him... Let's see: RAW "Sub Zero" and his best ever IMO - "Watch Me Shred." wowzers.

Man, that was some good listening!

Re: Dillinja-Warp Drive...blast from tha past

when I bought my first tunes I spent like 200 bux or something crazy! haha

Platinum breaks 1 was in there so Ill claim that as my first piece.

TIMELESS. I sat there and listened to it trippin out for like a WEEK!

tons of old metalheadz and tech itch and decoder stuff but Im pretty sure that the nine was in there along with the twisted ep on virus. and the tech itch remix of mocean worker on palm pics recs.

all of the tunes I bought that day were deffo dark moody nastyness.

which is just how I usually like it. =;]

Re: Dillinja-Warp Drive...blast from tha past

Yeah, "Watch Me Shred" was definitely the best R.A.W mix. Remember him beat juggling Goldie & KRS-1's "One"? Yeah, pretty sick stuff.

Off topic, Theo's "Recycled Rave" was super sick back in the day. It was an mix of what was considered old school techno even way back then.

Meeeeeemories!!!

Re: Dillinja-Warp Drive...blast from tha past

I was into hardcore before drum n bass, so the first time I bought records I actually bought 3, DJ Tron on Headf**k, Bloody Fist 19, and Doormouse's "Beer Theme" record on Distort...found them at Elevator in San Diego...was borrowing my brother's turntable to listen to them, didn't even get my own decks until years later.

First drum n bass record purchased was Chrome 13.

Re: Dillinja-Warp Drive...blast from tha past

I will never forget when diztorted dreamz mixtape came out. I think I bought it when I went to one of the color parties at the old bowling alley. I got to listen to fester and odg do a 2x4 (axis worklab) set for the first time since odg got in that accident.

I remember putting it into the tape deck and listening to that s**t after taking all kinds of mind altering substances...

Anyways the way R.A.W. mixed in the alkaholics and odb hip hop drunkies to dnb was the illest s**t. I think that was the first time I heard the goldie remix of digital, which was really very nice at the time. Mixed in with valley of the shadows by origin unknown. Then of course it was all about moving shadows 100th release which was goldie and rob playford distorted dreams (hence the name of the mix).
When labels like Moving Shadow and Suburban Base were really running ish.

Ah man tha good old days...

Re: Dillinja-Warp Drive...blast from tha past

While I am no DJ, I am avid record collector now so, my first ever electronic record I bought was Night of the Living Acid's "Get Funky" and T99's "Nocturne" and "Anastasia" sometime in late 91/early 92; great, now classic, techno beats. As for dnb/jungle, my first record I bought was from Record Reaction in Long Beach (miss you Jimmy!), scored me Ed Rush's "Skylab" and Hidden Agenda's "Dispatches". Damn fine cuts...mixtapes, I think the first ardcore/jungle mixtape I got into was RAW's Wake UP LA but my favorite of all was RAW/Trance "Untitled". Had this sick "Johnny Jungle" remix that still haunts me.

Yo dr. Drum!
Yes yes, that was 'Soul Science: Drunk n Bass VOL.2'..
The first volume was DJW & Alder and the third was Don & Jason Angel.
Sorry to say my friend Tim and my mom have it on archive status and refuse to part with them, however I was thinking of putting it to digital and posting it on myspace.

The white tape you're speaking of was
SDF1 & MC Dapper D 'Live @ M2k' (Go ventures new years event for Y2k. I have no idea where any of those are, but I do remember playing 2 sets that night for more than 2 1/2 hours because RAW was reportedy in the Andes mountains in South America (right Raoul?).

If anyone has a copy of SDF1 & Dr. Mario 'Rinse Cycle' with the limited edition see-through acrylic & foil cover get at us cos I cant find it in the archive and that was the first D&B mixtape to come out of the OC; I'd love to post that one online as well.
