At first i laughed at this, i mean, getting caught with porn and being a representative of BBC is kinda funny... but honestly, hes in jail in a foreign country, and thats f**king scary.
(anyone wanna remember scuffles with la policia in good ol Mexico... not the best of times and guarenteed that isnt half as bad as Dubai)
He prob new better than to fly with weed, hes been doin this for awhile now... he cant be that oblivious. Prob forgot about it after a long night... understandable, just the wrong place to get popped for it.
But the porn... c'mon, who checks the laws regarding PORN when traveling to a foreign country?
I really hope BBC send some serious legal help his way, kinda lame they arent commenting on the situation... |

Re: Grooverider Arrested in Dubai
taken from the Dubai Guide
"Under Islamic law, the crimes that carry defined penalties are murder, apostasy (rejection or desertion of Islam), adultery, fornication, homosexuality and theft. Interpretations of the law and punishments vary from state to state. Lesser offences might include debt, usury, alcohol and drug abuse, and use of pornography.
As an expatriate, you’re subject, of course, to the laws of the country you’re in. If you’re thought to have broken a law, you’re taken under arrest to a police station, questioned and instructed to make a statement. Up to this point, it’s highly unlikely that you will be allowed access to outside help, either legal or consular. If the offence is deemed serious enough to warrant your detention, you might have to wait some time before your case comes up. You will be allowed legal representation, but everything will be conducted in Arabic. Your statement will be translated into Arabic, and it’s important to insist that an appropriate official, e.g. a member of staff from your consulate, checks the accuracy of the translation and the content of anything you’re required to sign. If no one is available to do this, you should refuse to sign, or sign with an endorsement to the effect that you don’t have a clear understanding of the document.
In court, an interpreter will be present to assist you and an official from your embassy or consulate is likely to be present, although only as an observer. If you’re found guilty, the judge will sentence you and ask for your written acceptance of the sentence, unless you want to appeal. Appeals obviously go to higher courts, depend a great deal on the severity of the accusation and sentencing, and can take time. In very serious cases, political influence might be brought to bear on your behalf, provided that your country has sufficient influence, but this is rare. Having influence with a person in authority can be of help to you, although expatriates rarely have such influence. Locals, on the other hand, may be able to petition their ruler to seek his guidance and help. In minor cases, your employer might intervene to help, particularly if you’re valuable to him, as long as he won’t lose face.
If you’re unfortunate enough to be given a custodial sentence, this is intended as a punishment rather than rehabilitation. If you’re found guilty of a serious crime, you may find yourself in a hot, overcrowded prison, where treatment is often harsh and you might have to witness the punishment of others, including their flogging.
Ignorance of the law isn’t accepted as anexcuse before the law, so it’s as well to acquaint yourself with the laws of the country that you choose to live in.
Non-Muslim expatriates sometimes regard Sharia law as unbending and overly punitive, which it often is by western standards – and for good reason. Expatriates are largely expendable commodities and, if you’ve engaged in criminal activity, you’re sent home after punishment.
As in other Gulf states, the legal system in Dubai is a mixture of Sharia, civil and criminal law, implemented by the Federal Judiciary, which comprises courts of first instance and supreme courts. The Supreme Council of Rulers, the highest ruling body in the UAE, appoints the five members representing the Federal Supreme Court, who preside over matters concerning constitutional law and rule on cases affecting disputes between any of the Emirates and the Federation as a whole. Local government plays an important part in legislation within each Emirate. " |

Re: Grooverider Arrested in Dubai
First of all:
f**k intolerant feudalistic Islamic law
outdated, outmoded, outrageous
But i have to agree, Grooverider f**ked up. He should have known better - even by just humm...maybe paying attention to the fact that clearly, in a repressive "kingdom" you can't have the western attitude of "i can do what i want".
Especially when it comes to big social/cultural differences and all that is usually tied up with religious views.
One should have had some Respect for the social differences and cultural sensitivities of the country your visiting or working in...
Why the hell didn't his manager or friends or someone give the guy a heads up...know what i mean?
I hope the British gov't considers it important enough to intervene, because it dosen't look good:
(I think it's in Saudi Arabia where a young girl was repeatedly raped. but under that Sharia nonsense she also is getting punished for having been in the presence of a man who was not her brother or father. ) That's some cold blooded ass s**t right there...
sounds like something from the bible...
i don't pray, but i'm sending positive waves his way. I hope he gets some help and gets out with the minimal amount of punishment.

Re: Grooverider Arrested in Dubai
My buddy Erik Aude (Dave Aude's brother) had a horrifying experience in a Pakistani for 3 years, here's his story:
I spent 3 years in a Pakistani prison for a crime I did not commit. Many people believe I got what I deserved, but I got screwed over big time. I learned the hardest way possible that you can't trust anybody. I went to jail in the worst country ever because a friend set me up. I was tortured for information I didn't have. This included electrocution, drownings, and being hung up like a punching bag and used as one. I was offered a deal with the judge. Pay 1000 dollars, and plead guilty, and I would've only had to of served 14 months. This is common in their corrupt legal system. The American Embassy urged me to take this deal. They asked me "What's worth more to you? Your pride, or your freedom?" Anyone who knows me might say that I'm a hard headed son of a bitch. Let me clarify one thing. My mom is no bitch. But my pride is worth a hell of alot more to me than my freedom. I refused to plead guilty knowing that I was facing a possible death sentence, or worse, life. I was given a 7 year prison sentence. I was relieved. 7 years I could handle. The only true American to have ever been arrested in this Country, ever. I was constantly attacked by Al Qaida and Taliban prisoners, or any other prisoner with nothing better to do than try to collect the 5000 rupee bounty on my head. I was kept in isolation for my safety. It wasn't enough. I was still stabbed twice, bitten, and in more fights than I could ever even begin to remember. And that wasn't even the worst of it. The guards were by far my worst enemies. They believed me to be a famous Hollywood Actor, which was not good at all. I worked on the movie "Scorpian King" as a stuntman and this bit of information turned into the rumor that I was the hero of the 'Mummies'. These idiots thought I was Brandon Frasier. They rely heavily on bribes and everyone there thought I was a millionaire. I received repeated beatings from the guards. Beatings so bad that every finger on my right hand was broken one by one. Two of my ribs, and my shoulder. That was just one day. Every time I fought back, I would be thrown into Cussory, which is basically a small dark room. So dark that you can't even see your hand in front of your face. The only time I would see day light was when I was brought out for my hourly beating. I was strapped to a chair and thrown on my back, and a few guards would take turns beating the bottom of my feet with a skinny stick. I spent a total of 132 days in that room. 8 weeks of them were in a row. I watched countless men die from beatings, starvation, and suicide. I consider myself extremally lucky to have survived. People think that my ordeal wasn't that bad because I managed to get through it. I seriously don't understand how anyone could think that prison time in any third world country can't be that bad? I'm gonna boast my ego right here and say this, "I don't personally know one person who could've survived what I did." At the prison I was staying at, there was a 1 out of 3 chance of getting out of it alive for anyone with a 5 year prison sentence or longer. I had a 7 year prison sentence. At least I represented America well. 1 for 1. Knowing that I was innocent is what kept me alive. Anger for the man that did this to me. Payback on him yet to come. I was not gonna wait around for a miracle. I decided to do something for myself. I learned the language and studied the law over there and was eventually able to get my sentence reduced from 7 years to time served. I was lucky. I understand why people would think that I was guilty. It's easier to think that someone is going through something as horrible as that when they deserve it. I'd hate to think about someone going through something like that and be innocent. I lost 3 years of my life for a crime I didn't commit. Almost lost my life more than once. No matter what I say, people will doubt me. The only way to find meaning in what happened to me is to pass on these small words of advice. Never carry anything for anyone, anywhere. Drug Smugglers are shameless. They'll get their products any way they can. Especially at others expenses. I was guilty of being trusting of others. Of believing that no one could ever do this to someone else. I was naive. And for the rest of my life, I'll be called a Drug Smuggler because of it. I've learned that people would rather assume the worst about you, than comprehend the truth. It sucks. I hope no one else ever has to go through what I did. Because hardly anyone will believe them if they do. Maybe I survived just to warn others? |

Re: Grooverider Arrested in Dubai
Bert Tatham’s Story
http://www.freebert.ca/

Bert’s job in Afghanistan was managing a team of Afghans to work on the ground with farmers, government officials, NATO forces, and aid agencies to try and bring drug production under control in a country that produces over 90% of the world’s heroin. He lived and worked in Kandahar, in the middle of a war zone, as an official with the Ministry of Counter Narcotics. Over the course of the 13.5 months that he was there, 44 of our country’s soldiers died in Kandahar, along with hundreds of Afghans including several with whom Bert worked directly. Bert himself narrowly avoided being killed several times by suicide bombers, including one whose remains rained down on his office after detonating short of his target. Despite these challenges, his team helped reduce the heroin yield by 18% in Kandahar during the first year, and similar results are anticipated this year. Bert credits this achievement to the Afghan members of his team, who risked death by both working in counter-narcotics and by working with Westerners.
After a year of service in Afghanistan, Bert began his journey home. While on a 2-day stop over in Dubai, his bags were searched and customs found two poppies that Bert was bringing back as artifacts representative of his efforts in Afghanistan. This find triggered an extensive search of his belongings that revealed a trace amount of hashish melted into the seams of his trouser pockets. Although the poppies were 2 years old and contained no usable amount of opium, and the 0.6g could not be proven with out a doubt his, Bert was sentenced to 4 years in a Dubai prison. His only hope for release now, is that he be granted Amnesty by the Rulers of the Dubai. |

Hey, I live in Dubai, and it only just came in the local news today www.gulfnews.com. Surely he must not have known, packed his bags without realising or something, but still, going to Dubai without checking, he must have been off it when packin, lol!
If he was caught in Saudi, he would get decapitated for sure. I can't see the Dubai police letting him off, infact they might use him as an example. Although him working for the BBC might work in his favour as Dubai dont want negative publicity, and the BBC can surely do that.
Hey, I could always visit him in prison "hey grooverider, you got a visitor" lol! Poor bloke tho, I had a dealin wid the Dubai police last week, and they are really bad to be around, they dont even know what day it is... mmmmm. As for the porn... well he can get that here, and as for the weed... yeah man, it can be found. But bringing it into Dubai.... WTF? I travel all the time and never or known anyone to be stopped and searched, not ever. But they do have sniffer dogs in baggage control so there you go, it was in his case... it must have been. But what we do know, is the polive will be smokin the weed... thats why they dont even know what frackin day it is.

Re: Grooverider Arrested in Dubai
London DJ detained for drug and porn offences
By Sunita Menon and Bassam Za'za', Staff Reporters
Published: December 03, 2007, 23:28
Dubai: A popular London DJ was arrested at Dubai airport for possessing marijuana and pornographic DVDs, his promoter said on Sunday.
DJ Grooverider, whose real name is Raymond Bingham, was detained on November 23 the day he was to perform at a club in Dubai. A British embassy official said it was aware of a case against the suspect. "We are offering consular assistance," said Simon Goldsmith, second secretary, political and media affairs.
The company which brought Grooverider to Dubai said it was furious over the incident as the DJ as well as his management company was informed about the rules that needed to be followed in the UAE.
"We are looking to get a full refund from the DJ's management company in London. We have lost £4,000 (Dh 30,000)," said Ram Nath, from Dexar Music the event promoter.
Nath said he went to receive Grooverider at the airport.
"We got him here after the huge success of an event which we did with DJ Fabio earlier."
Fabio is a DJ partner of Grooverider.
Nath said he went to meet Grooverider at the airport and waited outside the airport well past the time the flight had landed.
"He was to play at midnight. I was getting worried when he failed to show up."
"At around 12.15am, his management company in London informed me that Grooverider has been detained by police for possessing weed and porn," he added.
We're looking to get a full refund from the DJ's management company in London. We have lost £4,000 (Dh 30,000)."
Event promoter
The company which brought Grooverider to Dubai said it was furious as the DJ had been informed about the rules that needed to be followed in the UAE.

Re: Grooverider Arrested in Dubai
Some people travel without giving respect for the customs, traditions, and religious legalisms of the country they are allowed in. Traveling is not a right, but a privelege.
Everyone disses their government about how they treat fellow nations. However when they head to exotic, religious countries; they act the same way. Selfish, ignorant, and not setting a good example of the "common" folks of your country.
My heart goes out to Grooverider, and whoever gambles on the fact they won't get caught. It sucks. But weed? Dude, and having porn, which in this case would be the cover of any male magazine. But I am guessing it might be a little bit harder.
I hope he doesn't end up on the "chop chop" in downtown Dubai for public display.. |

no i think it's fairly clear what he did is considered a minor crime in dubai, but minor crimes still can earn you a few years in jail.
i totally agree about traveling though, before I went to Japan, I spent a few months reading everything i could about the customs. that way i didn't come off as a totally ignorant and offensive american... i guess it kind of worked.

According to etcetera ...
i don't understand what the big deal is?? having porn is the same severity level of being in possession of a tootsie roll...& for the marijuana he should just pay them a fine through the mail...

LOL - not in a Muslim land - BIG offense there.
But any publicity is good publicity for entertainers - wonder if they'll release the names of the porn titles (hope so!) & what kind of weed he had on him.
Grooverider is the man tho - BIG up to him anywayz.
