one chapter is closing, and another one is just beginning...
a million good memories at the martini lounge/larchmont/bee - that place has meant a lot to me... a home away from home at times...
definitely lookin' forward to the new venue, and creating a ton of great memories at the new spot.
can't wait to see where its at.

Definitely going to miss that place. A lot of memories.
When i heard that it was going to get torn down - i was trying to figure out a way to appeal to whoever it was that bought the lot that, the place should be spared because its a historical place...well, at least for
the junglist community...
In a certain sense (and in no way trying to belittle the great tradition
of Jazz) The place is our equivalent of the "Central Ave Jazz-corridor that
use to exit many years back in s. central LA...of course the big difference is that we're just talking about one night at one club while the "jazz corridor" had many places and sites that were part of a whole flourishing of art/culture in the black community at that time...(so maybe my analogy doesn't hold...haha)...
(true, there was Science, there were undergrounds and raves...but for a regular weekly...)
Anyway, in the end, it isn't the physical building - its what goes on inside...Good to hear that the JP crew found a new spot.
Switch! and we won't even miss a beat!
Big up the JP crew. Always appreciate their style: no silly hype or posturing... just quality music

I started going to Respect right when it had moved to the martini lounge. This was when I was a student up at UCSB. Every thursday I would ride my way down with some homies and dance my ass off, drink, and revel in the music and incredible energy that is the Los Angeles dnb/jungle scene. It didn't matter how far I had to drive because I was gonna get to hear 'that sound'.
Respect was the club that I saw many locals rinse it out at and gave me a sense that I could somehow contribute to this great art form too. It gave me inspiration to keep creating. I still remember the very first tune of mine that I ever heard played out at a club was when Jayvon played at Respect. It was called 'The One' and I had just finished it the week before. I cruised down (I think with Jamil) and he played it and I almost melted haha. What a great feeling, especially seeing people dancing to something I made! These are the types of memories that Respect has provided for me.
In either case, Respect has been a phenomenal club and the JP have always been a crew that I highly respect and value. I can't wait to help keep the flame burning at the new diggs! |

Respect moving from Boardners to the Larchmont was when I noticed five projectors on the wall. These guys were open to the idea of visuals, and embraced us. I wish I could still lift objects over my head, but you take what life gives you.
