I finally got around to listening to some dubstep

...and I must say...I don't get it.

This isn't knocking dubstep. I liked what I heard. Its just....I dunno....it seemed like I kept waiting for the mix (Hatcha/Crazy D) to start. It might be to mellow for me.

I don't know that I'd make it out to a dubstep event (if I ever make it out again that is). There wasn't enough energy it. maybe I didn't listen to the right stuff. I wanna give this another go so can anyone recommend anything

Re: I finally got around to listening to some dubstep

well, i do think you should hear it live...

...because most likely you get to hear a djs who are on top of the music, including the latest tunes... the energy comes across more too...(I had a similar feeling as you when i first heard it...I like it but i'm not the biggest fan... its fresh, fun to dance to and you know, bass feels good

Like DnB - you got to hear it on a big loud system....

are you anywhere near la? i think theres an event tonight even...

Re: I finally got around to listening to some dubstep

Yeah it takes a few times live. You get so used to the velocity of DnB that it's sorta hard to just hit the brakes right off the bat. Give it a few months, try to hear it on the best systems possible. I just may creep up on you after a while. Took a while for me.

I felt the same way at first also but like any genre out there everyone has a different style. I myself have really enjoyed the recent Fabriclive 37 Caspa & Rusko mix.

Do what i did..........first time i heard the s**t live was 6Blooc @ Pure Filth.
Loved the stuff ever since, but im a lil selective with what i like.
Dont really like the excessive wobble or heroin slit my wrist dubstep.

Im def more into the west coast/rub-a-dub stylie!!!

hence why i loved 6Blooc

Re: I finally got around to listening to some dubstep

Try Lukki's mix (from Seattle)

it's one of my favorites right now.

http://www.barefiles.com/download.php?id=2220

Also, like DnB, anytime i tried to get someone to listen to it, I would always come back saying "well you really gotta hear it live on a dope system to get the FULL effect!" It's the same thing. Lots of kick, bass, synth and grimeyness.

Also, you get a full party atmostphere as well, like dnb, where everyone is brockin out to the best tracks.

Definitely check out SMOG this Friday or any of the PURE FILTH's or if ya feel like coming down to Orange County, 41DUB every other sunday night. (plug)

Re: I finally got around to listening to some dubstep

if you got into jungle after 98, it's gonna sound too slow for you.
if you got into jungle before 98, it's gonna remind you of that feeling you got back then.
the tempo is more akin to mid 90's jungle, than anything else right now.
just with a different drum patterns.

the west coast dubstep has a lot of 808-type sounds, which is what i grew up on, so i love it.

but the diversity of sounds in dubstep is one of the best things right now, tho.
you got the 4/4 s**t like Narco.hz, the 808 heavy s**t like Matty g or Roomate or 6Blocc, the heavy darkness like Headhunter or even Shackleton, the vulgar dancefloor stuff from Caspa and Rusko, the syrup-soaked Marlow or Gravious and even the ethereal sounding Vaccine or Martyn.

theres mad flavor out there rite now!

and the vocal tunes! black ghosts remix, klaxxons remix, fat freddies drop, warrior queen, spaceape, moody boyz.

i'm just excited to be excited about music again!

Dubstep isnt really made for dancing in my opinion. Its made for quality speakers that can handle the proper Subsonic Bass.

Some Dubstep has bass that drum and bass couldnt even imagine of having.

This is not music for someone who cant wait for the next top 10 list from Andy C.

Yeah great post bro. Very much true.
I'm actually noticing a lot of older heads who all but dissappeared all together return for the dubstep.

That whole vibe of being locked into a new sound is always exciting. Especially when the masses are still sorta hating on it but know they will be rocking out along side you within a year or so. :D

lol within the last few months I've already started to see people that "couldn't stand it" at shows.

Re: I finally got around to listening to some dubstep

at this point i'm excited about the music, but i'm really dreading the fact that the commercial rave promoters are about to jump on board.

i'd hate to see this music become just another room at a rave/massive/festival or whatever they're calling under-age drug parties these days.

i would lose interest at that point.

but that's how things work. the people who love it, early adapt to it. the commercial promoters see the genuine interest in something and try to make $$$ off of it. (how else can you pay for a house in the hills?)

we'll see how things progress this year, tho.

Garage has kept it's counter culture status and even when promoters tried to incorporate this genre to their events. The garage community just did not support it. Let's hope Dubstep it's guided by their actions.

Thx Ills**tkid! I think me and Pablo both have an extended and well rounded background in D & B and many other forms of Dance music and that comes out when we play. We both wanna see people get down and have fun, thats the bottom line, the Pure Filth Ethos if you will. We've all experienced some magical moments in the L.A dubstep scene in the last year or so. For those lucky enough to make it to Pure Filth @ Higgins Gallery when Mala dropped his remix of Cays Crays and the entire crowd sang the words in unison...STILL makes the hairs stand up and that will stay with me forever. I think thats one of the qualities that i'm really enjoying in the scene at the moment is the loyalty, dedication and unity amongst all involved not just in L.A but worldwide! Can't wait to see where all of this energy goes...TO SOMETHING VERY POSITIVE ME THINKS!
