Favorite Party Moment

Inspired by the hook/chorus thread.

Describe to me a moment in your party going experiences that always sticks out in your mind. What were you wearing, what were you hearing, who was around you, what track was on, how did you feel inside?


Not so much a party, but it was at Vibeflow and Origin was about to take the decks and he laid down an Orbital track?

Building a wall inside, a wall around my heart....

Just said that over and over and over again, and then he brought in the beat.

I remember wearing jeans, drinking a Pacifico, and feeling so blessed to be surrounded by my friends, listening to such great music. The way that he picked out this song, that seemed to speak to me at that time. Its almost like he knew I needed to hear it. He winked at me, I felt like the most important girl in the room....

Looking around I saw more faces smiling, like they were sharing that same feeling with me.

I'll always remember my first DnB party. It was like the first hit of crack, every other party I ever went to wasn't ever quite as good as the first one.

Josh Mayhem and I had flown up to San Fran 1 way to buy a van conversion from my step mothers parents. The van was pretty tight, had a couch the folded out to a bed in the back, a closet, fridge, yada yada. It was the perfect long trip rave machine

Anyway, I believe this was about 99 when DnB was still somewhat big in San Fran. So after we picked up the van, the plan was to go sight seeing around town for the rest of the weekend. We did all standard stuff, and ended up on Haight & Ashbury.

We walked into a few different stores and landed at a record store. Mr Mayhem was already into the DnB & rave scene, so he asked the people at the store if there were any good DnB parties that night. We were in luck, there was, and apparently it was gonna be a good one. We got a flier and killed time until it was party time.

This party was underground of all undergrounds. We had to call a couple different #'s to finally get an address to the pick up point. It was a KFC parking lot. We arrive and see a bunch of other kids waiting and round, kicking rocks. Finally a big blue club van/wagon pulls up and tells us to get in.

We stuff as many people as we can in the van and get trucked out to the bottom of a hill, practically in the middle of nowhere. We are told to walk up the hill, and be very quite as we do so, and we are supposed to see where we are going once we get to the top of the hill. We hike about 10 minutes to the top of the hill.

Once at the top of the hill, sure enough we see a bon fire, a single truck and a set of speakers, with a bunch of kids having a good time. The spot was right on the edge of a beautiful cliff, right up against the ocean. At this point in the night, its quite cloudy as it tends to be in San Fran.

We join the festivities , and partake in some extra curricular medications. The vibes are on point, the people are as nice as can be and we are having a great time.

About the time our "medications" are peaking the clouds have cleared to reveal a huge full moon practically sitting on top of the water. It was truly a religious moment for me, and one I will never forget.

There were pictures taken, but I have no idea what happened to the camera, as it was just a disposable one.

So that whole night was my favorite party moment.

Ahhhh, sigh. What a memory.

Thursday night at DEEP, maybe six or seven years ago (?), during its first Rhythm Lounge incarnation. Future Cut were the headliners that night. They dropped Casino Royale on dub, and some random dude in the crowd performed a self serve rewind-- he reached up and stopped the record, gave it a half-hearted scratch, and looked up expectantly as if it was normal for partygoers to touch the decks. I'll never forget Future Cut Darren's face. Skyler was emceeing that night and said something to the effect of "yo, get this fool out of here." Stephen (Syndo) quickly hustled the guy to the exit.

there are too many moments that i can think of....

the first time simon baseline smith and john b w/ mc justyce played at midnight bombers (and every midnight bombers ive been to as well)

my first party kentucky fried gabber in early 97

apx1's set at drum circle (that whole party was really fun)

dara's set at guerilla warfare (forgot what year tho)

anytime ive seen andy c, friction, marky, die, zinc or dynamite mc live has been a great moment

..... i can go on forever with this haha

That was defintely one of my favorites.

My all time favorite was Armeggedon 97'. A 24 Hour party @ Sculpture Land in Palm Springs. Green littles hills surrounding a 1 acre man made lake, with trippy sculptures all around the lake, with big stone pathways to walk around on. theres was like 8 different areas. they stopped letting people in, so everyone rushed the gate. cops showed up to try to break it up, but they gave up. its was very tripperific

that Armageddon party josh was talking about was crazy there was a riot at the door we had to jump the fence to get in the people I rolled with left me because the cops turned away 5000 people because the promoter wouldn't give the owner of the location more $$$$, raymond roker wqs the only dnb dj to actually get in so he played for like 8 hours playing all his records on both sides twice...
I ate a 1/8 of fungus and a pure pill and tripped my brains out...
my homey fosic was actually dating yuri (the girl on the flyer) when that party cracked it was pretty trippy... I even went swimming at night... the weather was good to...

my moment was at organic 1995 at snow valley... the chemical brothers, orbital, the orb, freaky chakra, and single cell orchestra all did live sets...
RAW played in the dnb room ...
I remember fluffy little clouds by the orb while the sun was coming up over the mountains...it was mystical.

I'd have to say Juju Beats 98' at Santa's Village... the whole night was my fav party moment....

we got out and our car had been towed (with about 80 others), but the night made up for it.

Yeah we got there during the day, so we got a proper spot right in the front by the lake and the main entrance. I went swimming too (there was actually a pool) during the day cause it was butt hot. I was there probably a total of 13-14 hours. I was trippin balls when everyone rushed the fence. I was like "whoa, where the f*ck did all these people come from?!" then the police helicopter came and was shining its spotlight on everyone, but my friend had brought one of those gagillion candlelight flashlights. So I pointed it right back at them directly into the cockpit, and they flew away. Everyone around me cheered thinking I single handedly made the cops leave. then my friends show up and say "make some room!" cause they're walking down the path with a fully assembled tent. Apparently a guy walked up to them and said "hey you wanna buy a tent for $20 bucks?" They said "yeah" and the guy proceeded to tell the guy sleeping in the tent (who actually owned it) that he just sold his tent, and directed him into another tent.

Crazy crazy times at that party. Have yet to go to a party that tops it. I dont think I ever will either.

I timed my acid perfect to watch Rabbit in The Moon when I peaked. I was sitting on the prop/projector stand right in front of the stage. That was another big rememberable moment for me. Rabbit owns.

first time i actually felt any "vibe" @ the masterdome years ago @ invasion...rob g had the whole place bumpin in unison..had a really great time @ some of the shows i did @ masterdome..all those times doin nos outside someones car in the parkinglots....helping start the "rave riot" on nye in dtown la years ago when all those kids were takin that g stuff and fallin out..and most of the massives i was lucky enough to play @...mainly..jujubeats in the mountains b4 darren j & bad co....and the last narnia that went off off the 76 frwy...cuz no other dnb djs could get in so i played like 3 1/2 hrs..had a blast...to many good nights.also dont know if anyone remembers this..the narnia that was up @ the ski resort ..maybe the 2nd or 3rd to last one ago..?we totally infiltrated a sound system and conversion van onto the grounds of the event..dont ask me how,we didnt have prior permission..and went waaaaay up to the top corner of the property and set up our own lil area with sound lights and a pop-up..it was crazy i dont know how we pulled it off..the promoters were up there @ one point like "who the f**k are these kids?..we had a canvass set up with a bunch of markers and by the morn all these bombers had come through and added a piece or tag to the canvass and it was a str8 work of art..the infamous narnia tag board!!..ill end on this...@ 4:20 am @ the first party i threw "circuit breaks" may 97 in sd @ rockers..walking around to all the groups of kids lighting up a joint takin a hit and handing it to them..i handed out like 2 oz of mek joints and by 4:25 the place was a str8 cloud!...i wish it would go back to how it was,but if you missed it..it was the golden years..gone like the 60's,but i feel good that i got to experience what i did...

Anyone remember Habitat? It was a little club in Santa Monica that Ryan Pathogen did?

Phear was on the decks and he opened with a Gridlok tune that just builds builds builds, and he's grroving along to the build and as its about to break he yells FUCK YOU and flips off the little crowd and the beat comes in.

It was intense, hardcore, passionate. I was like 'yah he's a junglist.

I have a couple.

- Going to Organic '97 to see Aphex Twin (& the dancing neon bears). Then going to the D&B area and getting geeked out cuz I heard Grooverider's "Kemistry VIP." I went nuts cuz that record was one of the first 2 D&B pieces of wax that I had ever bought earlier that year.

- The DHR tour in Dec. '97 playing at UC Riverside. Shizuo, EC8OR, & Atari Teenage Riot. Straight hardcore man.

- Coachella '99. The first and still the best Coachella in my opinion. If you love electronic music, it was like everyone was there. To have Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, and Richie Hawtin all back to back. Dego (from 4 Hero), Carl Craig, Luke Vibert, Autechre, etc. Definitely worth the price of admission!!!

- Everytime I've seen Orbital. Those brothers know how to put on a show. The best moments are when they play Chime, Satan, Dr. Who, Halcyon.... s**t, every damn tune!!!

- Catching Kenny Ken, Grooverider & Fabio at the Viper Room for Atmosphere Tuesdays.

- Nation in July of 2000. The venue a month before was for Jungle 2000 but this time around, the moved the D&B area. It was between these 2 buildings about 5 to 7 stories tall. The lights were set up from the windows of both buildings shining on the crowd. At one end is the stage about 6 or 7 feet high above the crowd.

I remember getting there and making my way from the back up to the stage. I ask MC? if he can get me back there and he says just come on back. I couldn't walk around the stage (there was no room), so I ducked and crawled under to the back.

What made my night was while up on stage, looking out at the packed crowd between these 2 buildings, lights going, bass booming, and a third of the crowd with lighters up like a candlelight vigil. Shit was breathtaking.

...we did that spot for couple shows, ryan knew a guy who was a vegetarian chef. The place was essentially a vegetarian supper club with drum and bass music. We got shut down after some cops stopped by, gave us their blessing, and then walked out to their car which had been tagged up. they had no beef with the party but had to shut us down out of principal, so wak. we then took the name and threw a desert party that was free...also broken up hahah, those were the days.

-that feeling in your stomach, not knowing where the night will take you.

-Transatlantic Move party outside of vegas in the desert. (hot air baloons, derrick may, crazy sound)

-Club Utopia in Las vegas.

-Narnia at Snow Summit.

-119 Crew.

chocolate factory, citrusonic and toghter, sunset beach parties (my reintroduction to house)

fry for 5 on melrose (a speaker fell on my boy jiec)

technostate 3 year off gage
they had 100 speaker but could only run 33 because the power kept going out. this was officially the day frankie bones got banned from the hardcore scene. and delta 9 and ron d core punked him for being a bitch and talking s**t about LA raves.


purple panda parade in irwindale at the race track (3 bad mice and omni trio live)

sad to say the best raves I went to were inthe 1990's
but that doesn't mean there hasn't been epic ones since...
we just need more honest rave promoters.

Frying my ass off at Grape ape 93. Riot police show up. Riot police beat kids. Kids get mad. Kids burn cars. So glad I was inside with wooden teeth.

Nothin to do with dnb, but it was the EBM scene and it is kinda sister to dnb...

I was at The Catch One in LA last October watching VNV Nation live. At one point the guy performed an EBM version of "darkangel" -- my fav track -- and I started dancing so hard I bumped into the guy in front of me. He shot me a kinda nasty look.

Later on, the lead singer pulls out a piece of paper with some lyrics, tells everything "OK, look, I don't know the words to this song yet, so I wrote them down. They're also in German, so if we got any Germans in here and I butcher their pronunciation, well then just FUCK OFF, OK?!?! FUCK YOU I will sing this song how I god damn please!" He then sings some floorbangin track straight off the paper ... lyrics in one hand, mic in the other. Good times :-)
