Help! I can't listen to an entire song anymore! WTF???
I love listening to mixes! And now I am so accustomed to listening to mixes - and songs presented as part of a mix (instead of tracks all by themselves).... that its hard for me to listen to an unmixed track on the radio or on a cd, ipod, or whatever, without becoming impatient and wanting to skip to the next track...
Plus, I'm so used to hearing a new track every 2-3 minutes (and often even quicker than that), that its hard to listen to one track on the radio or CD for 5+ minutes...
Anybody else get this way? |

Re: Help! I can't listen to an entire song anymore! WTF???
Thus the problem with dnb imo mr. Whizard. I always wanted to produce a tune where in the end it just cuts off and just like random s**t happens and see if anyone actually makes it to that point of listening, ha. this is also why i think Reprazent was one of the best dnb albums (also along with Shanice's album) ever because every tune stood alone so well. I think more older tunes (no not cause i am an old bitter fogie) have stand alone power a bit moreso then new tunes and i think tunes with strong vocals stand alone better then any. songwriting is the same in every genre. the point of it is to keep the listener interested and engaged from start to end. there are some (but very few) dnb songs where i get mad if a dj mixes them out because they evolve so much and another beat layered with them does the song a disservice, imo. either way dnb is promarily dance/club music and like with all club musics s**t needs to s**t fast to keep the masses interest |

Orbital's "the box" is one of my favorite songs and its 28 minutes long... i dunno.
we are all conditioned to want need things to happen quickly. that is how it is now. and i definately dj that way.. but when im listening to songs (unless they are very disposable dance tunes) i like to listen to the whole thing.
not saying i get my moments where im flipping all the time but for the most part i like to let things play out. |

Re: Help! I can't listen to an entire song anymore! WTF???
generally speaking with "dance" music, its dj music. its not really supposed to be listened to from start to finish. the intros and outros have made themselve appear throughout the growth and lifespan, which is constantly chhanging, and seem to be disappearing , depending on what sub genre of whatever subgernre is the topic. thinkback for a second.most old skool techno/rave had very short intros. as the gernre mutated, the intros seemed to get longer to suit the style of djing involved, as well as outros.
edit.
seems to me , in general , they are getting shorter again..
whatever

Re: Help! I can't listen to an entire song anymore! WTF???
Sure, if I’m not in the mood to listen to a particular song I’ll skip it, change it, whatever.. But in general if I like a song, I like to listen to the whole thing. To me songs/tracks are like little musical journeys or stories, and if it’s good I don’t want an abridged version. Of course if you’re talking about a mix it’s a different story.. But even then you want dynamics. A good intro tune, an occasional break down, not just drop after drop after drop. I do think though that in general peoples attention spans are getting shorter.. It’s so easy now a days to quickly move on to the next thing, be it the next song, channel, web site etc.. |

Re: Help! I can't listen to an entire song anymore! WTF???
I haven't read all the posts, so this point may have been brought up already, but most dnb is not designed to be listened to fully from start to end. No one wants to hear 32 or 64 bars of just drums and a little synth line or maybe some vocal repeating itself (i.e. the intro). Producers design tunes for dj's so there are parts that you could probably cut out that are for mixing in/out of that you wouldn't necessarily have if the tune was designed for someone to listen to. There are exceptions of course. People like High Contrast, Klute, Teebee I think are good examples of artists who make dnb songs that you can listen to all the way, but even they have some tunes that include 'dj elements'.
Edited cuz I just read that Whizard can't listen to full 'regular' songs too. Well man, there is this pill called Ritalin that helps a lot of my students learn Math....soooo, yeah. lol
I know what you're saying man. I get into a mood sometimes where I just wanna hear new s**t all the time and keep skipping to the next track once I get the gist of the tune. I think it's a product of being a dj, cause that's how I'll listen to tunes at a record store. However, there's just some music I GOTTA hear the whole way thru: Pink Floyd = good example.

When I am listening to other kinds of music, lets say for example, old school r&b or soul - and I am really diggin' the tunes, sometime I think to myself, man - I would enjoy this much more if there was a really good mix/set of all these awesome tracks. once i get 3 minutes into any of the songs individually, i get the gist of the song, and start thinking - lets bring in the next track already.... haha

...ah man, I'm all about the 'prog/jam/exp/psych/' bands with the 10+min.songs! ...that's all the stuff I'm accustomed to, compliments of my parents and their bizarre record collection. Attention to detail was a requirement in my family or I went to bed without any supper! . You'd think we lived in the 30's or something...all huddled around the living room, staring at the record player!LOL!! My dad all "Oh,oh,oh..wait listen to this part" as he played it back 7 times just to make sure we heard what he was hearing...As for dnb, um, can't do it though. Although I very much appreciate the subtleties, the formula and structure of the music is still too repetitive. But, that's dance music where the tunes need to keep the same tempo throughout. |

Not alot of drum edits in the tune but her vocals carry the track beautifully!
