the vocoder voice effect makes it a bit cheesy. always reminds me of cher's "do u believe in life after love" haha. woulda pleased me more if the vocal was less "wet". regardless, i think more dnb should follow a song-like structure i.e. intro, body, chorus, bridge, chorus etc.. i just wish these guys would change up there drum kit. it's always the same smashy snare. and those synth stabs need to be retired already. but the concept and song structure is dope. it will def open up the ears of the non-dnb listener which i'm all for. |

Re: Pendulum- Propane Nightmares
I can't say that I agree with you. We should take the structure of drum&bass, or dance music --- and change it to a more generic / standard / traditional song structure? Why would that be better? I was drawn to drum & bass because of its differences.
We should homogenize it for the sake that more people will like it?
I'm all for opening up the ears of the non-dnb listener --- and bringing in new/more people... but compromising the music or pandering to mainstream sensibilities isn't necessarily the answer to do that...

You have to keep in mind that the market that pendulum is stepping into has not heard there snares, or synth stabs or that "pendulum sound". To most people this is a very new sound, and alot of non dnb people are taking a liking to Pendulum as an artists group rather than a dnb dj/producer outfit.

Lets all try to remember that they were in a band before they were pendulum, and that they probly want to be a big band more than they ever wanted to be intl. Dj's.
I think what they are doing is great, there taking the dnb flavor that they have created over the years and are fusing in their roots to crteate their own sound.
Its different and i hope it gets noticed. |

Re: Pendulum- Propane Nightmares
hmmm...tough call here...
For almost as long as I can remember....since DnB came over to the US basically, I've always said that US mainstream audiences are so conditioned to the structure of intro/verse/pre-chorus/chorus/verse/bridge/outro that it's SUPER difficult to get crossover success with our tunes. Euro audiences are MUCH more used to having instros play on the radio & therefore we do tend to see this reflected in the charts...
"Hold Your Colour" went Gold, & charted UK Dance #3 (2007)...UK Indie #5 (2007)!
How many other DnB artist releases can you pick out that have sold @ least 500K worth of units & can consistently chart internationally like Pendulum's tunes do??
I'm sorry, don't know about the rest of you, but I would LOVE to be a Gold / Platinum selling DnB artist with sold out shows @ spots like Wembley Stadium or MSG or Staples Center....
This tune sounds to me like the A&R staff came to them after doing some market research & told em, "THIS is what will put you over the top"...
I would love for them to win a Grammy or something for their new efforts, but don't get me wrong, while I pray that we will see their crossover success in the near future, I hope that they don't completely walk away from what got alot of us hooked on their sound in the process....but finding that happy medium is oftentimes QUITE elusive.... |

Re: Pendulum- Propane Nightmares
Yeah, totally agree.
And to be clear, I have nothing against Pendulum (or them "going for theirs") - there are a great number of Pendulum tunes that I completely love. But the more they reach out to new fans with that cross-over appeal, the less they appeal to me... in the same way that the more crossover that Aphrodite's sound got, the less he appealed to me.... but earlier in his career, Aphrodite had some completely amazing and classic tunes that weren't cheesy or cross-over in any fashion...

When your sound is broad so is your audience.
Matt hit it on the head to.
That aphrodite cd that had the "Man Of Steel" track was the first dnb cd i ever bought.
And it was because...maybe.....at the same time i had my first bong shack.
When I heard that tune in my friends room i thought.....WOW, this is so cool. Then i searched for that track until i came upon that aphrodite cd.
Then after hearing the rest of the cd, i thought OMFG...this s**t is SOOOO FRESH!!!
And maybe that right there is the feeling that others are getting from Pendulum, but instead of Hip hop crossover, its more rock.

This is a little too Nickleback for me, but you gotta give it to them for reaching a new audience.
The biggest shame is how hard the international DnB community hates on them. I mean, f**k, we finally got somebody pushing DnB to a wider audience, and now DnB doesn't want to have anything to do with them. Almost assures there won't be any follow-on success for anybody else . . . |

If I was a normal (American) top 40 kind of guy , I'd probably think it sucked because I don’t like techno . I think it would fit more into the European mainstream then it would stateside. ...actually, lemme retract the "help ruin" statement. Bitter choice of words, and i am far from bitter. There are heeps of producers creating exceptional dnb! Some on the forefront, some remain behind the curtain (as far as the mass perspective) and some up and comers all doing their thing. But, is it me or is a good part of introducing dnb to new listeners the past few years been with this sound? Obviously it has done something right!...right? 8ringing the kids in droves! Super! Having this as the lure has been a godsend!."Hey everybody, this is what drum n' bass is! boh!". To me i feel that this sound = commercial/radio rap in hip hop. Sell, sell, sell! Dilute, dilute, dilute! Exploit,exploit,exploit!!....i love it! I Rather it that sound than the brand i'm into! Come on, everyone has had, in any form of music, that hidden gem you found and loved until everyone found out about it. You then knew it was time to leave that behind and find something else! I don't want that for me in this genre! Keep listening people. THIS is drum n'bass!Thank you Pendulum, thank you Subfocus! :-) |

Re: Pendulum- Propane Nightmares
Jayvon.........
is having people outside of D&B checkin your album all that matters though? what's the point of appealing to the masses if what you're grabbing their attention with isn't D&B in the first place? do you think all the "new" fans pendulum are going to make from this track are going to be listening to paradox in a few months? i doubt it.
all they're doing is making people outside of D&B think that D&B is some kind of synthy, rock, dance music. obviously they can make whatever kind of music they want. just don't call it drum & bass.
i've never been a pendulum basher and i stuck up for them even after slam but this is just garbage and i'm very surprised that there's any junglists still supporting them after the comments they made on DOA. |

Re: Pendulum- Propane Nightmares
Funny, I just posted a blog today about how much i love Pendulum's Liquid sounds.... haha
a while back,
I met these punk rockers and they were all stoked because they were going to Pendulum show. It was a bit disturbing at first but HEY if the music reaches more people I guess that is what it is all about.
Kinda unifies us.
I went to see them last year and it was quite like a loud rock concert.
Still though, I was hoping to hear some of there DnB sound....
