Can digitalsoundboyadmin or shy fx explain something to me>>

I know you visit this message board from time to time so I thought I would ask this question.

I've been here in this country for 12 years and i've come to know almost every single uk dnb artist (including yourself) that has toured in america. I also know 99% of the US veteran dj's and producers that have worked really hard over the years to make a name for themselves.

Today I was looking over pictures taken during this year's Ultra Music Festival in Miami and I came across this picture which I didn't understand.

How is it possible for a female dj from Canada that i've never heard of in the 12 years i've been involved in this music to get a slot on the dnb stage at Ultra when there are way more accomplished producers and dj's from this country who don't even get booked for this event?

The only edge that I feel this female (signed to your label) has over the other dj's and producers that I speak of is that she has a pretty face and blonde hair.

I've never really posted any hard questions directed at a member of the original foundation of this scene on a public forum because I always feared it would come back to me in some way. I recently decided at the end of 2007 to give up my hopes of being a competeing dnb dj in america so I guess I can freely say what many think about privately but stay tight-lipped about due to the politics of the scene .

I really feel that because of disheartening political moves like the one depicted in the image above, many dj's/producers in america are transitioning to other genres of music because they feel that no matter how hard they try or how talented they are, no one really cares. This is whats killing the dnb scene in america.

I know this is a very controversial subject but it would be great to get some feedback from other members on this board.

Sincerely,

Stephen Delano McFarlane

Re: Can digitalsoundboyadmin or shy fx explain something to

djdelano makes a good point. Ive tried competing to do the same as him. IM lucky to get an out of town DNB gig here or there... I started focusing more on hiphop/mashup + party/electro scene and its only done better for me. Im on Crooklyn Clan now, have 5 hiphop/mashup residencies in the SF Bay area and now travelling + actually getting paid vs. whatever I ever got accomplished with DNB.

I still love DNB but yes, politics have pushed many a DNB DJ to other genres, such as hiphop, mashup, electro and DUBSTEP. Glad Delano brought this point up.

No diss to the chick playing (I dont know her by face but Id probably recognize her name).

Re: Can digitalsoundboyadmin or shy fx explain something to

If I could rephrase myself... Politics play alot into why people leave DNB. I woudlnt say that women have it easier... If fact, its quite the opposite... Its actually a catch 22... Some women (alot of them) have to work twice as hard to get recognition, Some just look good and make moves. In the end, If your really talented, You get ahead, be it DNB or whatever your into these days. These days, The hardcore still love DNB.

Re: Can digitalsoundboyadmin or shy fx explain something to

the irony is that, this thread is about politics and how most dj's cant get a break like her, yet she gets a break and everyones out to bash her cause shes a girl.

i know shes been signed to formation before and has been spinning worldwide for ages. so im sure shes paid her dues in one way or another, whether some of us has paid attention or, ironically enough, chosen to ignore her efforts.
obviously shes done something right, if not, at least shes eyecandy.

which brings something refreshing to see at an event, rather than watching the same 99% of dudes play the same boring tunes out.

To me, BTraits signing to DSB is a good thing!

She's definitely not an amateur, and what makes her different (and what caught the attention of Shy) was not just her look (which doesn't hurt, come on!) but her style, and trk selections!

THink about it....If you were a new upcoming producer, who better to drop one of your dubz out there then a SMOKIN HOT female DnB DJ!!!

If u want to hear a set from her, check out dnbarena podcasts...she just did one a few months ago!

Ive seen her do her thing for a while now.
Seen her play our big bassrush festivals and funktion nights under LTC.
I love seeing these two girls do there thing!
AND THERE HOT!!!

Weather or not YOU know her or her resume shouldnt mean that she hasnt paid her dues,
Im not sure if shes making tunes or what, but comming up as just a dj is really hard and seeing how Traits and her girl Kay are handling it in a Big way, i def have to hand it to them.

Im sure that the soundboy admin could expand and let you know alot more, but from seeing them twice in good setups and fat rigs.....i can def say i enjoy watching them rock it.
And besides all that.....yes, they are very cute!

Shes played all over the world with SS. He obviously recognized the potential of SOMETHING NEW AND FRESH aka B Traits a girl DJ + MC Kay a great female vocalist. B Traits has progressed from the exposure LTC gave her. Good for her. Shes a good DJ. Yes, shes a cute girl. But to be made out to be 'just a pretty face' is extremely chauvinistic considering you have "never heard of her" aka you do not know of her history and what shes done and accomplished in order to make it to that stage. Which makes the original post sound straight bitter...

There is only a small handful of women who have suceeded in this genre. To give her s**t just for being pretty is f**king lame. If this were in the house/electro/trance scene it might be a different story. she plays vinyl and CDs.
she isnt pulling the "itunes click play and wave ur hands around and dance in front of an audience all doing so while half naked" thing. shes playing dnb. among the men. and she isnt exploiting herself sexually in order to do so. give her some f**king credit.

B. Traits, is actually a good DJ. She's played out in SF before. Funny story to go along with one of the SF shows... One of the promoters booked a hotel for LTC and instead of it being the one by the venue in SF, It ended up being 20 miles to the south where I live, in San Mateo. DOH! $60 cab ride later... sorry for side tracking. They are real good friends with my homeskillet DJ ANGST, so all good in my book. Big ups to Mary Mac, she doing big things up in Vancity as well.

Re: Can digitalsoundboyadmin or shy fx explain something to

from what i know she has tenure as a dj. i'm sure she's paid her dues one way or another at least on that level. girl dj gimmicks and those just lookin to come up quick for notoriaty always fade if they don't have the roots and skill to handle themselves but from what i gather, she is highly skilled on her mixes and supposedly her live sets are on point. but i feel delano's concern. for me, trying to get a slot at wmc has always been like pulling teeth and when u see new comers on a stage that i would die to be on it kinda hurts when u take into consideration i've dedicated half my life to this w/ international releases and an original album in my discography. we all know it occurs even in our local scene. dnb is not about proving anything to anyone for me. it's always just been an aesthetic of my life as i know it and if people connect w/ me on that level than great. if not, fine. i just wish more people had this perspective w/ this music instead of being concerned w/ what other people think about how or what they play. most importantly i wish more dj's produced their own music and supported other local producers in their sets and that those people get the representation they deserve at shows like these. but i've been playing in la for over 6 yrs now and have yet to play a massiv nor do i get invited to wmc unless i bust bawlz. i ain't holdin' my breath and i shure as s**t ain't gunna shake hands w/ the right people just to get a slot if they don't respect my craft so imm continue to bust my arse in the studio cuz at the end of the day, no one can f**k wit dat!

Big ups to her and the rest of the female DJs and MCs (many of whom call LA home) who have the guts to get up in the booth and be a part of the boy's club we know as D&B.

On the other hand, it is kind of weird that she's been signed to both Formation and Digital Soundboy without writing a single tune.

Re: Can digitalsoundboyadmin or shy fx explain something to

I don't think LTC performs as a group anymore.... anyone???

DJ Traits is a siiiiiiiick DJ! Love her track selection, love her DJing style. She has been performing all over the place and putting in dues for a good while now, and her mix on dnbarena is super dope.

A good question is how someone gets signed to two major labels (Formation, DSB) without having any tunes (out for the public to hear)? Maybe they saw some potential in her, and maybe it was her looks - but that is not something that is an ailment of the DNB scene. Look into almost every major entertainment industry (music, movies, fashion, TV, radio) - and that is just a fact of life, and how this world works... right or wrong.

I do know that there are some forthcoming releases planned for B. Traits - and I can't wait to hear them.

Nothing but love for this girl, she is super sweet, and super talented.

Unfortunately - everyone in life doesn't get the breaks they need/deserve, but that does not mean that we should automatically discount those who do get a break.

I'm usually the first one NOT to post in these types of topics but I ran into something a few weeks ago when I was in NY.

There is a semi-prominant female dj out in the NY area that I 'first-hand' witnessed play a FULL pre programed, beat matched set. with teases dbl drops and the lot! I thought it was purely taboo and didn't think anyone had the balls. but I guess this thing is only going to get worse. =(

Now on the topic of btraits. That girl is actually a very good DJ. I have personally seen her out many times and she does a great job.

oh no... someone is actually making it as a dj nowadays... and shes a female who doesnt exploit herself... gasp

dont get me wrong, without the producers, djs would have nothing to play. thank you and much respect to all the producers out there who lock themselves in the studios writing great tunes.

personally... producing isnt for me, ive never really caught the bug, i just love the feeling of playing records whether it be at home or in the clubs. it is great to see someone make it as a dj nowadays and not someone who writes tunes but has no idea how to spin them. some can do it all and some choose to stick to one thing. to each their own, as long as someone has the love and talent for the music, whether it be djing/producing/mcing/singing etc, they deserve to go wherever things can take them. just because someone hasnt written the next "vault" doesnt mean they havnt paid their dues.

b.traits is definately a great dj, ive seen her play live many times and her track selection and dj skills are great. she deserves everything good thats coming to her.

also - wasnt our very own dj phear signed to a german label without any releases to call his own? why no hate then? are we a sexist scene now?? I say bring more girls in and lets end the damn chin stroking sausage fest and get back to dancing, bumpin and grinding and all that FUN STUFF that we like to forget about.

Re: Can digitalsoundboyadmin or shy fx explain something to

looks as tho maybe emailing the admin at digital soundboy would have been a better idea to get a good answer, and not on posting on multiple forums.

Re: Can digitalsoundboyadmin or shy fx explain something to

or, since he knows the guy he's trying to get an answer from... like he stated above:

I've come to know almost every single uk dnb artist (including yourself) that has toured in america

contacting him personally might have been am easier way.

but then again, my Monday at work wouldn't have been near as fun.
