promoter conference?

Power is wielded by those who control the flow of information...

If we spread simple knowledge of promotions, our power as a whole will increase.

Many people want to throw events, they just lack the resources and know-how to take the necessary steps in order to put up a successful event.

We encourage new promoters to take initiative to put on more events and want to supply you with information regarding this matter

I would like to get your opinion on this, both patrons and promoters?

I wanna have a conference discussing the following:

- Event Planning
- Venue Management
- Contract Arrangement
- Booking Tips
- Promotion Tactics
- Marketing
- Networking

I encourage other promoters to take part in this, I dont have all the answers but maybe all our experiences can contribute to the widespread love of this music.

No date has been set yet but are you down for this?

Re: promoter conference?

In theroy this sounds like a great idea. In theroy I love this idea. But Putting on events is not something you can take a class on and then your off to make some money. I would love to attend a seminar put on by the top promoters in america or europe but honestly do you think they would share their secrets or connections they have spent a long time earning. No way. Who would you say is qualified to be the key note speaker at an event ike this in the drum and bass scene? I also feel that you need to learn from your mistakes and figure out your niche on your own. If you buy a 16 year old with a new license a 100k mercedes. he's going to probably crash that car or something. I think the reason why the top dogs in this industry are where they are at because they started at the bottom and worked there way up. You don't get out of college with a degree and get the CEO position. You have to learn the basics. You have to start working for someone else passing out flyers for free tickets. Then when you have proven yourself you get paid a little. You have to make those mistake so you won't do them again. If you didn't burn yourself on the stove when you were younger then you wouldn't be so careful around the stove now as an adult. I think there are too many promoters throwing drum and bass as it is. Saturation is the killer. I think if every week we have a uk artist in so cal then it looses its luster. Could you imagine having only 1 uk dj out here a year. You would miss your sisters wedding before you missed that dj. If everybody was a promoter (I think most do not understand what really goes into it and the stress) who would come to our events.

Re: promoter conference?

Any and all are welcome to this event, thank you for the input thus far!

The specific reason for this conference is to help current promoters learn new tactics and brush up on their game, also, to assist any new promoters that want general knowledge about event production

Yes, event production can be very stressful but knowing certain key aspects of the game can help reduce that stress

The best way to learn anything about this game is just go do it, experience is not learned in a classroom but having prior knowledge of this subject will help you

We all make mistakes, please take this opportunity to learn from ours so we can help spread the growth of this music we all love so dearly

more info soon... we'll keep ya posted

Re: promoter conference?

I think it's a great idea and I would be happy to attend something like this.

The more mistakes people can avoid financially, politically, and socially, the more our SoCal scene can benefit.

Everyone is entitled to keep their cutting-edge ideas secret...whether it's a specific flyer route, promoter techniques, or something innovative that's never been done. But attending meetings and sharing ideas is ALWAYS inspiring to me, and I'm sure that a lot of good will come out of putting heads together. The networking in this type of event alone is worth the time. Who knows...this could turn into a huge SoCal promoter super crew. I'm sure there are people that will show up that may already have experience in things that I want to accomplish (i.e. getting sponsors and investors).

Definitely keep me posted Drew...

Re: promoter conference?

yeah i'm all up for it but after reading this comment i've shifted to this opinion.

I think its an intuitive process and really not all that complicated.... as I see it, if I wanted to make somethin happen I would make it happen. I would trust in those I connect with along the way to guide me, and would enjoy not knowing exactly what to do but gaining a deeper understanding. it's all about the communication, trust, and $$$

in regard to mainstream promotions i'd agree but local drum n bass has so much potential that has yet to be achieved i'd think its time for people to work more together and be less competitive.

if i were looking at drum n bass as a business i would agree with you but dnb has a long way to go imho.

i'd have no problem sharing tricks of the trade with people if it will elevate our music scene to be able to compete with the other genres.

Re: promoter conference?

I think to say that promotions is not a business is very naive. If I put money into anything I now look at it differently. It is now a business. I have created a company dedicated to putting on events that include comedy and concerts. But if you want to do it for the scene then why not let everyone in for free.

Re: promoter conference?

You have to charge people to pay for expenses - I do parties to have a good time with the hope of one day profiting but I know its unrealistic to expect that to happen any time soon on a regular basis.

My belief is that there is not much money to be made off drum & bass. To get a lot of people at your party you usually have to pay big bucks for talent/production. It's not easy throwing dnb parties and I think people need all the help they can get.

I strongly feel that people working together with teamwork is key cause we can't do this on our own. We have to come together and hope that the other parties succeed. Not approaching it like cut throat competition, hoping that other people's promotions fail. Thats no good.

Look at the political races. You understand why Hillary should drop out? She's f*ing up Obama's chance of winning the election by tearing him down. I'm sure you can see the parallel to drum & bass. DNB heads should unite and compete with other genres rather than competing with each other because its COUNTERPRODUCTIVE.

Re: promoter conference?

This conference seems like a good idea and I think it can only help. Yeah there are tons of unexperianced, eager promoters out there trying to do something and usually having half-assed shows. Not on purpose but because they lack little things here and there, like having proper sound or equipment or even decent flyers. Every piece of throwing an event can affect the outcome of a party. Of course people don't want to give up all their tricks and strategies that get them those extra 10-15 people to pay at their parties but just networking alone can help everyone get better s**t done. If all you get out of this is the face behind who does what party and maybe a phone number I think some good will come out of it. A different big headliner everyweek sounds a little better than the same headliner flown out here 4 different times within the same month no? I think So. Cal. has some big dogs who have been doing things for a long time who can share some light. A roundtable discussion w/ some drinks involved who knows what can come out of it, maybe even a Summer Music Conference, So. Cal's got the pull!

Re: promoter conference?

I beleive there is good money to made made in DnB but there are several reasons why people are not making money. First off there are too maney promoters doing the same thing. I think in the 5 major counties in So Cal there is oo much DnB doing the same thing. People are either booking a UK or well known dj name to headline and then having locals play or they are quote unquote supporting local talant. I invited a co-worker/friend with benifits a while back to come out to Adrenaline on tuesday instead of going to focus(which is the house night on tuesdays in the oc). She said drum and bass isn't that the music where most of the people attending the event are guys and most of the guys don't dance like there too cool. I could never get her to go. I think that working together and holding hands is great but I thik we need to fix the stigma of the 80/20 guy to girl ratio and drum and bass will flourish out here like it is in the UK. We had micky finn out here and this was one of the things he noticed. Micky played at the existance rave on 5/3. He said that the promoters out here should repect the dates of other promoters and wait until next week. That way there is only 1 show a night and if people want to see drum and bass then they go to that show. Then that promoter makes money. Next week its your turn pete. Then you make money. We both help each other and we all win. Like I said I think there are too many shows being thrown. Look how many time Dieselboy will be out here in a two month period. 5/3, 5/27, 5/31, 6/28. He is getting played out. Now I can tell you the order in which he was booked and I am sure the original promoter who booked dieselboy would not have booked him if he had known that there were going to be 3 other dates booked before and after his original date.

Re: promoter conference?

Drum & Bass is not big, its still small but it has grown since I started listening to it at age 16... The future generations will carry on this vibe so why not educate them?

If Drum & Bass was too big or over saturated, there would be weeklies competing every night in different cities not counties. It would be played on commercial radio, sold in bulk, and marketed everywhere.

I know people that stop doing Drum & Bass or switch genres of music because they feel the scene is weak and too political. It is this way because everyone is fighting over a slice of a pie that hasnt even been cooked yet. So lets cook the pie first...

This conference is all about giving away great ideas and revealing trade secrets to those who seek them.

The problem is that people put on their first events not knowing anything.
If the outcome is good, nothing is learned
If the outcome is bad, they are discouraged

Its sad when artists and promoters wanna quit this s**t because its not working the way they want it to. There are alternative ways of promoting Drum & Bass, you just gotta find out how...

I hope all of you can make it to this meeting, it will only benefit us all as a whole if we all take part in actively and collectively sharing key information about simple business applications pertaining to Drum & Bass.

Thats my WERD!

Re: promoter conference?

I would def attend a conference. Drum and bass has been "cooked" its been around for a long time. And just because there are not weeklies fighting over dates does not mean there are not one offs fighting. There are Two major promoters in so cal who are throwing the large events and the rest of us are trying to catch up. I hear pople say all the time my show would have done better but there was another show the same night and that took away from my turnout. As electronic music promoters we need to start acually respecting eachother dates and letting each other make money. I think the conference needs to be about that.

Re: promoter conference?

well said... but at the same time its a survival of the fittest in every way.

i dont see bassrush turning down a night because i am throwing a show at club rain in costa mesa... ya know..the bigger promoters in LA have gotten there from YEARS of shows and trials.. they have also gained respect from both artists that want to play for them, agencies that book the artists, as well as party goers that trust their shows..

im all for progression, but we cant go in thinking that we are going to all come together and be one big happy family..
its just NOT going to happen

Re: promoter conference?

there may be initial short term gains achieved right away i'd have to say. i think some positivity would come from it quite soon.

as well as be a beginning for future talks, pave the way for future shows by connecting like-minded mofo's. and would def make it a more even-balanced thang.

2 big promoters def ain't runnin' things in socal. there's a sh*tload of nights poppin' off. unify for some talks can only help.
