HOW DO I GET DJ GIGS IN LA?

What up? Im a DNB DJ from NY. I just moved to LA.. Im not AT ALL familiar with the scene here.. HOW DO I GO ABOUT GETTING GIGS IN LA??? how does the scene work here?

The scene here works like any other scene, go out there, pass your CD out, get to know cats, keep your mix tight and original and the gigs will come.

haha. more of a cliche then a truth.

it really takes hard work and effort to get yourself started. go out, pass out mixes, introduce yourself, and make a niche for yourself by starting something of your own (club, radio show, mix series, promoting, anything to make yourself stand out).

100% agreed with Whizard...the effort you put in, will pay off in someway...LA is big enough to score a gig somewhere, where you're willing to contribute to the cause and not come in, dj and leave....promoters hate that s**t

here are some things that would help:

1) have an awesome mix, and give it to everyone possible, presentation counts so design (or have a designer create) a nice cover.

2) be a nice guy, don't be a dick

3) meet people, talk to other DJs and promoters

4) offer to play for free

5) try and play on radio shows

6) seek out promoters who book up and coming djs (grapevinez is always open to new talent)

7) most importantly stick with it, your hard work will pay off


you can do it, anything is possible.

please bring a decent sounding demo with you and give it to werd @ UPGRADE

Start attending people's parties.

Create an online presence for yourself. Don't say anything bad about anybody or anything, especially while you are building your reputation. Don't whine about other people playing parties that you're not playing at.

Promote yourself and the nights you're interested in spinning at, even if you're not on the line-up. Repost bulletins, hand out flyers, and pass out mixes.

Post a mix and bio where others can see it.

Network with and get to know who's who (i.e. active promoters, producers, and dj's). Don't be afraid to travel and show support in other cities

It takes time and work...just stay dedicated and consistent, and your true character will shine through.

Most importantly, don't get cocky and think you know it all. Be humble. Confidence is different than talking about how experienced you are. Your mix and bio should speak for itself.

Success will come to a well-rounded person illustrating hard work, people skills, networking skills, dj skills, and knowledge of music.

And don't forget to start producing (I still need to do this part, so I feel hypocritical saying this, but it's true).
