It's 2008 and people still mistake Drum & Bass for "Techno"!
Well when I was at Upgrade last night, after I got a drink then went to the patio to have a smoke a couple guys stormed out after me saying "what the hell is this whack Techno crap they're playing?". You would think someone who payed to get in would at least have some sort of idea. I've been listening/prod. D&B since 98' and that's when bass lines took my life away. The scene has changed a lot though, I rarely see any OGs anymore... |

Re: It's 2008 and people still mistake Drum & Bass for
What's wrong with the word 'Techno'? Before someone came along and coined the term 'Electronica' drum&bass was commonly classified as a form of Techno music, was it not? Or at least commonly referred to as. You can't expect someone who isn't acquainted with jungle music to somehow get it's exact name right, ya know?
For instance, I was playing records in the shop I work at in SF and some punker chicks came in and asked me to stop playing that 'Rave' music. It was 'Inner City Life' for god's sake- about the furthest you can get from what most would call 'Rave' music. I was a little frustrated, I'm not sure why-almost as if I had to explain to them the value of the music.
But then I realized: I don't neccessarily know the difference between Psychobilly and Dance-Punk. Emo vs. Mod? I just don't, but these kids might. And what's wrong with the word 'Rave' for that matter? Or 'Techno'? Going to raves, eating ridiculous drugs, dancing till morning, being young- f**k it sign me up. Those were some of the best days of my life.
Be PROUD that we share this special little music that is outside the pop conscience enough to be unidentified by club hoppers looking for Top 40. |

Yeah Upgrade actually downgraded by moving to the Moon Palace! The last two shows I've been to were disapointing to say the least. The sound keeps cutting off, a-hole bartenders, and drunk beach boys tryin' to act tough. Oh and there is nothing wrong with the word Techno. It may have been derived and influenced from it, but far from it. I'm not the one to label anything but Genres are very necessary. |

Re: It's 2008 and people still mistake Drum & Bass for
I disagree whole heartedly. But respect your opinion just as such.
The fun for me was finding the edge. The place where drum&bass became something almost entirely new. The freedom. In fact, I believe thats what makes d&b so f**king cool. Its range. The Panaceas, John Bs, Aprhrodites, DJ Realitys, the Markys, and Evol Intents, the DJ Dies, the London Electricities... they make drum&bass worthy of endowing its own title, yet knowingly question that boundary.
Drum+bass is techno just as much as it is jazz, or New Wave, or Brazilian acoustic, or industrial. Its appropriation, right? Sampling and compositing to form a larger ideation. Thats what makes modern music so unique. The challenge for me has been not to covet that sort of sentimentalism. And to dust off the occasional Shadowboxing as if I I'm hearing it for the first time.

I've always found the word 'techno' to be degrading, for some reason. Like techno was written by some kid banging random 303 samples and four-on-the-floor beats into Acid. Guess I've always tried to differentiate away from that image.
