Question for all producers/dj's?
We've been involved with this music since it's inception. I think it's safe to say that a lot of things have changed since than.
One thing we have noticed that hasn't changed within this genre is the way producers/dj's hold on to their music/tunes.
When researching music on-line via various portals we noticed that most tunes within this genre are incomplete?
Why is this??? |

Re: Question for all producers/dj's?
Probably cause of Illegal Downloading... No? We Djs/Producers are just protecting our selves. I never PAID for an incomplete track. |

Re: Question for all producers/dj's?
What do you mean by incomplete? Granted, I'm at the opposite end of your experience but I rarely encounter these out in the wild. If it's acceptable to submit "incomplete" tunes for DJ consideration then hell, do I have a bunch of stuff to start pushing! |

Incomplete meaning when an artist/producer/label is promoting their own material on a site like 'MYSPACE' or various other sites like the one mentioned, the tracks are usually only snippets & not the complete tracks.
Exclusivity?
Illegal downloading?
Any other reason??? |

Not Necessarily on-line shops, as we know what their intentions are.
More so sites that are used for self promotion. |

Re: Question for all producers/dj's?
cause alot of producers don't want to give out their tunes for free, which is completely understandable. They put in all the work to make the tune and would one day like to see it pressed or released and who's gonna buy a tune if they can just download it for free. Another reason is exclusivity, alot of producer/dj's hate giving up their tunes cause they wanna get booked to play them. Why pay money to bring out a producer w/ 1 hit to drop his own track when 100's of others are dropping the same tune and probably doing a better job at it.
on that note, i got a bunch of unreleased tunes that no one has so book me! j/k! |

Re: Question for all producers/dj's?
As a preview, as promotion, and to dissuade people from ripping them and putting them in DJ sets, I'd assume. Pretty simple.
I did just give away 320s of the first release on my label - which came out on vinyl - to promote the latest release, as well as an unreleased tune, so random acts of full-length kindness happen too sometimes. :P

i would rather preview a low bit-rate full file, than a 320/wav snippet. |

Re: Question for all producers/dj's?
Thats a very good point. Believe me when I say people will still rip your tunes. I have a dj friend that went to france to play. He said while he was out there this cute local female was opening up. She was playing strait rips from bbc radio in the club, with fabio talking over it and everything. When she was approached and spoken about this. Her answer was "I like good music".
Trust we all do, and sometimes we go to the extreme to get it. Maybe we d/l from some p2p or just pressed the record button when we visted our favorite artist page on myspace. Point is some producers hold on to thier tunes for so long you dont even care. You just want that tune you know you cant have.
With the internet now we cant rely on the old way of doing things anymore. People are getting your tunes before there even out. Not just any tune but big tunes. Its in the artist best interest to keep it as exclusive as possible, to create as much hype as they can around it and then release and sell as many as they can.
But theses days I think its better to get it out as soon as possible. People are so hungry for tunes and with cdj's and serato, we should let them have thier cake. It think its become a much more competitive market and people that have been in the business for a long time are starting to think that the gig is up.
They can no longer rely on the fact that they have the freshest dubs.
Everyone is starting to go into the live show route, or the turntablist route, etc... Make it more of a show.
I sure as hell wouldnt want to put full clips of my tunes on the internet before they are available. But hey what else are you gonna do just put up little snippets at a low bit rate?

Re: Question for all producers/dj's?
i decided a little while back not to put up clips of my new tunes on myspace or virb at all. i have had some ppl asking me "why don't you have clips on myspace" or "where can i hear your new tunes again" but they should wait until the tunes are released. if people hear tunes too soon before their release they won't want them anymore by the time they come out. that's why i let radio djs and producer/dj friends have the tunes before release and no one else. so they can play them on the radio/in the clubs.
i guess your questions is why don't ppl give away their music for free? but as long as the system we have is in place i will keep the tunes on lockdown until they are "released" |

Re: Question for all producers/dj's?
So we see a trend here.
From what we gather, it's more about protecting your music by the means of not releasing it to the general public?
That is of course unless the tune gets picked up by a major or is one of those tunes that makes it into the bags of all the big name DJ's & that's only if the dj/producer/artist is interested in having his tune played out by someone else to begin with.
???
So basically 99% of dj's/producer/artist in this genre are sitting on tunes that will never be heard by the general public. |

Re: Question for all producers/dj's?
i wouldn't assume it's as high as 99% but personally i am fortunate to have labels releasing my tunes
now before i was signing tunes i gave them away to anyone.... |

Re: Question for all producers/dj's?
They WILL be released to the public in DUE time and probably NOT for FREE.
If the tunes are not released to the public the artist must have a reason and should be respected. |
