What will the next generation contribute?

Just wondering what will the new sound of drum N bass will be in the upcoming decade!?! I am part of the 90's generation who grew up listening to goldie, roni size, dj krust, essassin, etc... then when the year 2000 hit, DnB got a lot harder, and even harder as the decade progressed. Now 2010 is just around the corner, the new decade of DnB is upon us, what will it sound like? What has not been done yet?

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

the scene is going darker and more minimal as a whole imo. Techstep has been in the same spot for a while but liquid funk has been getting more and more stripped down and more influenced by detroit techno and minimal techstep kinda vibes. Its quite obvious just listen to recent commix, alix perez. icicle, zero t. Its no where as musical and soulful as it used to be (that could be good or bad, all a matter of opinion). Also I think the same is happening to dancefloor stuff but there is still plenty of different stuff but even some newer subfocus stuff is going a bit edgier. Overall I think a darker dnb and def more of stripped out kinda dirty dubstep influenced stuff is in the works for the scene as a whole. Even the like of andy c and more dancefloor djs are embracing stuff like frank mountain or spartan

Stuff like lynx and alix perez - allegiance is the future imo

the way i see it - seeing several dj's/producers in the same breath are NOT making the switch. case in point - dnb is not about to be toppled over by dubstep. dubtep's dubstep and dnb's dnb.

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

I see drum N bass going in two different directions, one is more dancefloor friendly where it encompasses more of the main stream, and the second, harder, darker, and more technical. The production is getting ridiculous, but definitely a very brite future.

Tune in to Radiobomb on 90.7 fm every 2nd and 4th friday to get the latest tunes.

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

nick, your just mad cause you want to post our trust threads on js :P all that means is that people are looking outside of the niche they carved for inspiration, thank god for that dude. I am dying for a breathe of fresh air, some excitement within our scene.

dubstep is dubstep, and D&B is D&B. What makes them different is the tempo, obviously.

D&B is going a few ways as far as I can see.

1.) Jump up wobble bass- which will get integrated into the electro scene along with bassline, certain dubstep, and speed garage.
2.) Minimal/liquid- the new deep movement
3.) Reggae/Jungle- the rudeboy sound is back

but thats just me

i beg to differ. i think the reason dubstep is not only allowed in the junglescene forum, clubs & parties forum, party reviews forum, photo's forum, etc. but also has its OWN forum (absurd!) is simple - politics. eecue has a lot of friends who are into dubstep and doesn't have it in his heart to upset them. reality however is this website does not dictate the future of dnbs. dnb is much bigger than js.com.

doa or dnb arena are keeping the foundation strong focusing more on the 170 bpm lifestyle. JS seems more fickle when it comes to holding it down for the dnb movement. loss of interest some?? or just folloqing the trends? nobody really knows

blues-soul-rock-funk-disco-hiphop-house-techno-jungle-dnb-dubstep.

that's basically the musical timeline imo.

with a bunch of genres spun off of those.

trip-hop, chipset, atlanta snap, chicago juke, bassline, baile funk, etc.

i see the nex gen increasingly incorporating more diverse sounds into their productions...

either that or turn towards more minimal production like Souljaboy...

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

Yikes...
yo pete, u'r coming off a little defensive aren't you? or im i reading that into it?
I don't think this needs to turn into 'is it
over for dnb' debate ya know? Dubstep is on this site because ..its eecue's site and eecue likes dupstep - . Its not so political - its just what eecue likes. hehehe

I mean, imo, i could see dubstep overshadowing dnb in popularity - it's tempo closer to that range that most
people listen to music at - i think... kind'o like that 'dirty south' sound or whatever...
But alot of dnb folks have accepted it as their own - it seems to me (DSB is pushing it) but the dnb is still going strong...in divergent directions too...

The future looks good to me- i like alot of what i'm hearing, but also i don't like a number of things...but thats to expected...its dnb - there is so many influences and directions it goes in...Seems like there are new producers (and old ones ) that are coming with a different take on things...It both has more popularity and underground respect at the same time...
I got into dnb because of Goldie and i'm glad to see him still around and still coming out with great musical ideas
And its interesting what the poster said about the techno/ Detriot influences - which i think is true, i agree, but don't you think that in a way, those have always been there...? Or like people say, 'it's getting darker' or 'deeper' - but hasn't it always?...or like in my opinion, I hear a lot of good melodic tunes - some good 'writing' ...but again, those have always been there too...in one form or another haven't they...?? (Production techs continue to advance and influence this is true). That's what i think is so trippy about dnb, it has this fluid quality, ever changing but based on what came before from one style to another-that also references other styles - and it kind of like evolves or someting...
(but it can still, at times, all sound too much the same - though thats true with anything)
And then there's ragga jungle - that i don't think ever really went away, but was off on its own for a little bit there...kind a closer to the hardcore scene in some ways... More chopage please: Long live the Amen, amen

And Dubstep is interesting. It has its own proper scene and direction/ trajectory yet (for now), it's kind of attached to the hip of dnb... and this has been a good thing for dnb It has helped dnb expand its horizons; it made it ok to slow down the tempo a bit and experiment - at least a little. And it has brought some knew folks into dnb. The relentless drive to 200 bpm's or the hardest head banging beats has gotten.... i don't know... i don't mean to say that you can't have a good tune or make good/interesting music at high tempos but if your looking for "funk" - it gets a bit harder to 'swing' at that speed... knowhaimean

You know, I like me some dupstep for sure -but i see people really getting down.. er or getting off to dubstep... it just doesn't do that for me - (i know, i don't get it) Yet i understand the feeling, because dnb/jungle still does that for me...Im quite well pleased.

I think the changing landscape comes from and is spurred on by the influx of a new generation of 'music' enthusiasts! so yeah! to the new generation!

no joey u read it write i am defensive. u know im always really straight up never beating around the bush. whats the point in having a dubstep forum if its already in every other forum? i don't get it. dave's site is called eecue.com. i look at js as more of a forum belonging to the local dnb community. many of us have donated time, money, etc. over the years only to find out the original purpose has switched and now we got to be hip and follow dubstep or else. screw that. i LOVE dnb. dubstep is alright. i don't think it belongs in every forum

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

I'll be totally honest... The only vinyl I have been collecting for a while now is jump-up era (96-98ish), and below. Those are the days I came into the scene with and I honestly don't believe (in general and in my opinion) that the drum and bass of today has nearly the heart or feeling of that of yesteryear. By "feeling", I mean the warmth of the music. It seems to me that alot of the drum and bass today is cold and lacking of emotion. Now of course there are exceptions, but as a whole "scene" or "movement" the vibe as well as the music has most certainly changed.

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

Why is dubstep such a big controversy? Is it that people are scared of it, that's its going to somehow bump out DnB or something?

AFAIK can tell dubsteb is stuck in the same mediocrity trap that had me turned off to DnB through the 90s: too much bass and neat tricks, and not enough musicality and soul.

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

i just see a lot of people in drum n bass fed up with the politics, fed up with the direction of the music, fed up with the type of crowd it draws, fed up with having to make a certain type of tune, fed up with working their ass off only to realize people are only trying to hold them back...

seems like a lot of UK guys are trying out other forms of music, and dubstep happens to be one of them. But I think just as many US producers and dj's are making the switch to the hipster electro house thing.

to place blame on one form of music is a bit much - i really just see it as people tired of the dnb game and moving on

i think the future of dnb is going to be a sobering one. the egos and attitudes will have fallen, the politics will settle, the old world of dnb will have moved on, and it will allow room for a new breed of producers to come along and change things. I dont see it dying off... especially in LA

more djs becoming producers and producers becoming "live" performers. there is no money in releasing your tunes anymore, which means that djs actually make more money to play your tune than you do to make it..its only a matter of time before people stop releasing tunes except for tour hyping singles or tour coverage CDs..

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

The DnB scene has been and always will be populated by purists. These people want to preserve what they hold sacred in their music. They are involved with DnB because they have an intense love of the music but like an overprotective parent they don't want anything influencing their baby and don't want it to change THAT much. While many feel that new influences and new directions help the progression of the music there will always be a large part of the scene who will immediately categorize new things as something compleatly different in order to cast it out of the DnB sphere and preserve the integrity of what they hold so dear.

I personally haven't been bitten by the dubstep bug. To be honest I don't really like it much, but I love that something new has sprung up and has gained popularity. I wish that people would stop strangling progression and let evolution happen naturally. Who cares if they talk about dubstep in 14 forums. Telling people when and where to talk and labeling their subject "out of the group" cuts off the creative flow. It censors the influence that might effect other forms of expression and limits creative people who may feed off that influence, taking the music in a whole different direction.

I forsee DnB becomming something that won't be titled "DnB". I also forsee a large group of people hanging for dear life to what they already know because it IS all they know. These people will run out of material at some point, the ones who embrace change will be innovative.

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

I'm still waiting for a heavier version of drumfunk to have it's day. Of all the genres that have had their day in the shade it's always sorta been stuck as a novelty style.

Other than that, yes dubstep. If people haven't realised that Dubstep is just a continuation of Jungle/DnB yet they really need to open their eyes.

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

oh yeah
drum&bass will get bigger
more than you will ever know

steadily, the numbers rise everyday
all styles
all forms
all techniques
will evolve into something different

thus... the cycle of music continues.

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

What are you talking about tailcoats. Never show me or tell me the facts behind this. Dubstep blazed it's own path and i found this sound by pure accident on a garage forum in 2005 late 2005. Yes jungle producers lets call it what it is are crossing over but name one musician who does not dip onto another genre. That is the beauty of dubstep you can hear producers like Distance bring heavy guitar into his tracks Mala that dub sound Cirus the more electronic vibe i mean is all over the place s**t i just got a new 320 of It's a man's world. Raul brigging that gangsta sound into the dub. I will always be a junglist and will always love it but long ago it lost that edge that it needs to regain. The only thing i can say is 8 bit tracks are starting to point in that new direction for jungle and lets see if the youthful ear catches this and embarks on a new direction giving us fresh new sounds.

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

Dubstep is already getting kinda old and dusty, it's the past and present now really, not the future..."J-Tek" is the new fad that seems to be coming up, I think we'll be hearing a lot more of this the next two years until something else comes up.

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

Hopefully, the new generation will bring us something better than this HIPSTER CRAP - because serious - the 80's were NEVER cool, and day glow will be out in a year or two tops.

American Apparel and their league of child molested soft core pornstar models and their bad taste and mismatched clothing have unfortunately become the spokes people of the modern youth, which leads me to ask your very same question -

what WILL our next generation bring?!

imo the NEXT generation is our eleven year old (and like aged) childrens... train dem up real good so THEY can come bring the funk!!!

This gen Y, or whatever it is called, has only taken what has already been, and mashed it all up. That in and of it's self maybe considered revolution, because we had thought to mash it up, but no one really did it - and now they have... but how long can bad trance and house get mixed into the top 40 along with a splash electronica and then be considered music?

Wait, didn't jungle fit this same description when it came about in the early 90s?

Re: What will the next generation contribute?

i hope people like Alix Perez, Sabre, Lynx, Icicle, Zero T, Break, Survival, Spectrasoul, etc. continue to gain popularity with the younger crowd and eventually overshadow all that Clipz, TC, Hazard, Distorted Minds and G-Dub garbage.
