socal dnb and its MCs...

Ok, first and foremost, i'm an advocate to all DNB sounds. I love checking out different clubs in the socal area and respect what all offer to out scene. I believe LA is doing an awesome job bringing DNB on the map, big enough for even the UK peepz to even turn their heads towards. I mean, we were actually recognized on BBC !xtra for it?

I'll get to the point. What the f**k is up with the MCs in socal i've been hearing lately?

I like MCs in socal and i've always supported them 100%. but man, do some of them know when to stfu when they hear a good tune being dropped?

For example, i can't stand the resident MCs at Adrenaline. Most MCs at that "club" (or should i say restaurant/bar) sounds like they recycle s**t from skibba d, and then they start scating over an awesome tune, even afer the tune drops. What the hell gives?

Whatever happened to MCs like MC Conrad? at least this dude knows when to quiet up when he hears a heavy tune.

Why can't i just listen to some good ol' drum n bass without a voice competing with the DJ?

I'm not talking about all the MCs out hear in the socal, and i'm not definately calling out names. I just want to know if anyone else feels the same way.

No disrespect to anyone, just stating my opinion and thought i'd share

Re: socal dnb and its MCs...

Personally, I can't stand an MC who can't stay on rhythm. A lot of these cats go skipping off their own beat, rapping at whatever rate feels nice or something. Drives me nuts! The whole reason rambling off in unintelligible monotone sounds good is because it *complements* the track, not competes with it.

luckily here in SD I don't see that too much... most of the MCs I run across repeatedly give superb performances. big ups guys...

you know its funny, I've been to several shows with big headliner talent from somewhere else, and a lot of the times I actually felt that our local guys, who opened for these big namers, gave a better performance. The headliners shoulda opened for our local talent!

Re: socal dnb and its MCs...

interesting thread.....i agree only to a degree but incredibly argue the comment about adrenaline's residents. if you are going to post a thread such as this, i feel it only justified you mention WHO it is you are referring to. otherwise, this is just a personal preference or issue for your self. i have seen plenty of dj's over ran by the mc's trying to top one another and there being like 5 of them on a stage. now that is ridiculous. let the dj do their set. properly assert yourself as an EMCEE or aka MC = Master of Ceremonies. hence, when this becomes a clustered display of beligerent, off tempo slurs and recycled material, by all means, give the mic a moment to breathe and cool off. however, i do not think it necessary to play off some of your personal xperiences in order to regard them all as the same. they are not. some dj's can even do some horrible crap or just get off beat or whatever. bottomline, they are still some the best dj's out there. reason being: they're human. i think the solution is really wiser orchestration when booking the talent and a better fit for each set would do wonders imo. it all goes back to the ebb and flow between the dj, the mc, and the heads they play for. all should strive for harmony in flow.

please don't let this turn into some thread of mc slandering and slaughtering because it gives many of us a headache. more, it has been done too many times to rehash the same hate/love all over again. this scene needs to focus more on supporting one another rather than criticizing or putting others down. a scene dies without it's followers, so let's push more for the unity versus being divided.

nuff said. rinse it out.

Re: socal dnb and its MCs...

If you've got a problem with someone's style, post a thread titled "I have a problem with MC Dingleberry's style." Otherwise, please skip the generalities. I mean, the equivalent of this thread is "SOCAL DNB AND ITS DJ'S." How might that go?

Good grief, what's up with socal and its DJ's? Can't they learn to mix properly? I was at the Smelly Sessions the other night, and the DJ's were playing wack mixes, triple-dropping Jenna G over Messiah over Twist em Out and it sucked! Why can't they be more like LTJ Bukem and get some precision on the decks? Socal DJ's you best better get your s**t together.

See how silly that sounds? Sure, there are s**t MC's, and they shouldn't get booked (or, as is more likely the case, someone should take the mic away from them after they've grabbed it without being booked). But you should realize that US MC's generally, and Los Angeles MC's in particular, are among the the best in the world right now. While the UK MC scene is about to biddy-biddy up its own ass, socal MC's pay attention to lyrics, timing, and variety. They're good at call and response and a bunch of them even sing.

At bottom, it's right to criticize lazy, sloppy MC's, because they--just like lazy, sloppy DJ's--bring down the scene. But you've got a good half-dozen or more MC's in the socal area that I would rank among the most technically precise in the world. Don't slander them because you don't feel like naming names.

Re: socal dnb and its MCs...

eh, i think the title of this thread is good enough; i really don't think that what this is called is really going to act as a deterrent to what is being said

that said, i really don't think los angeles mc's are the best in the world, i mean aside from dino and question mark and stuff, no one else i have seen at bassrush last year or respect this year (i don't even want to mention adrenaline, even though i just did) really blew my mind

there was a pretty decent mc who came out from san diego, that guy with the crippled hand, who was pretty damn legit, more legit than i've heard in a while

i think mc's just need to learn how to shut up once in a while so we can hear the song, not steal skibadee and shabba's lines, and not spit f**king nursery rhymes and other lyrical parts of already-produced drum and bass tracks

otherwise i think i'll just sit in my car and blast the s**t that really hits without worrying about sloppy mc's

Re: socal dnb and its MCs...

I left out names and generalized on my rant SPECIFICALLY for the respect of the MCs who do their gig up there, even IF they blow my balls. I left names out merely for innocence.

I understand what you guys are saying by justifying my thread by stating names, but as someone has stated already on this thread, i'm not here to slander anybody. I'm not here to talk s**t about a specific MC because i'm here to support the scene, rather than destroy it.

However, i will add that at Adrenaline, the only person i can honestly stand is MC dre. Everyone else- i can't speak on their behalf. Like i said, recycled s**t sounding like it was borrowed from the UK emcees.

I don't have problems with MCs AT ALL. I just wished some of the ones around my area knew when to SHUT THE FUCK UP with the wannnabe scating and s**t.

Only people i really give props to, because of their originality, is Dino, xyz and Dre. Even though Dino isn't technically from LA but he still kicks ass.

This thread was generalized so everyone can discuss and start breaking down opinions SPECIFICALLY.

Also, so i don't get flamed for talking s**t about certain MCs

btw, this is not based on my personal preference nor experience.

my words used previously is based solely on comparison with other MCs, such as, like i've stated, MC conrad.

MCs where i'm like, thank you! i can hear the tune instead of ur jibber jabber blab blaba biddy ba.

Ill say this and leave it alone.... IF you have a problem with a certain MC, walk up to him at a show and pull em aside; Introduce urself and tell him ur honest criticism.... Constructive or Not..

I bet that the certain MC will actually listen to you and take notice to what ur saying.. Because U are the one observing and listening...

I was once pulled to the side by this lil itty bitty girl, and she told me her gripe with me, and It totally changed my whole career... I constantly thought about what she said, and how I can make myself better for her and others like her... That kind of stuff sticks with you...

THAT SAID, there are dope MCs. Here and other places.

but also need to point out that

Easy for you to say. Your one of those MCs you described. Fact is though its not about going up to them and criticizing them. Its about being humble and respecting others. Staying true to yourself and not losing your self in the glory now that you have a mic in your hand and are finally up on stage.

If you think it additionally makes me a troll for having my ROOMMATE with the same IP post his OPINION. then i dont know how that constitutes me as a troll. I never double posted under different logins.

I've been to Adrenaline 3 times, because adrenaline DOES pull some big names for their venue. I give them that credit

I went once to support the DJ because it was a big name (Micky Finn), concluded some MCs killed the set. Overall good night

Came back again, forgot who the DJ was, MCs still killed the set.

3rd time micky finn came again, but more for Taxman (even tho tax man didn't spin) and some MCs still killed the set. And the sound system kept blowin out.

I dont ever go to adrenaline ever again. Only 1z i get down with is Respect and Bassrush. So for those who say to stay out if i dont like it, I DO.

I never changed my focus on this thread, and the only thing i do apologize for is failing to use the Search button to find if this has ever been brought up. Again, i do apologize for it. I've always lurked around this forum for years, but never registered a login name.

Re: socal dnb and its MCs...

i think it would be more powerful to talk to the promoter for next time. i don't think DJs or a Producer would really take to some person like 'hey come here, i need to criticize ur DJn' or tune' (like dre said i have had it happen, but for me it isn't the most effective way to get to me i suppose [not that i dismiss it, but i am not going to reconfigure what i do for one person at that moment]...damn so many caveats to not sound assholeish, ha)... in the end they let the market decide. a hot dj gets booked, a bad one doesn't. a good tune gets played and bad ones don't. so in the case of mcs if u feel strong about it talk to the promoters (but also recognize that they booked the mc for a reason so). also really who cares if a mc is humble or not, people are people. in a utopia peeps should perhaps be humble, but people (mcs, djs, producers, butchers, bakers, candlestick maker) are just that people. some are cool, some are asssholes, some are chatter boxes, others are shy. i know asshole djs but i play with them cause personally i don't care about that. i just want good shows and good djs. plus many times u can catch people on 'off days'.

like Todd said, if u have a complaint i would say either say names (just cause at least we [who u are publically addressing on a public board are talking about] or talk to the promoters of the show and if u get listened to by the artist or promoter, then be constructive, but also prepared to not be listened to cause again a promoter books a performer because they want to (whatever reason) and in the end artists are artists and if they changed and listened to every single criticism and/or believe their own hype they would get themselves in a tizzy. personally (whether it sounds bad or not) i just do what i do, if u don't feel it fine, if u do fine. i used to really care what people thought (and maybe that is a process anyone performing goes through), but at this point (and i think most artists out here feel the same) if a promoter books me or a dj asks me to play i pretty much am certain that they know what they are going to get in me. personally i take criticism more weighted from my piers (ie. djs i play with, promoters who book me and a couple of dnb heads [non-performers] who have been there with me from the beginning who maybe friends, but shoot criticism and accolades str8up), but in the end every artist has to do them and not worry about others and if u get booked and become bigger than michael jackson then great, if u never get booked etc. at least u went out on ur own terms.

Re: socal dnb and its MCs...

this topic is redundant but it comes up often so there's something to be said about it. the bigger picture is people having a bad time due to over usage of the mic..haha. in turn, they can't enjoy the music. in essence, we all help to create the industry. u want somethin...u want change? request it. u don't like it? don't go. promoters will take notice and will change their lineups. like dre said, be direct w/ the artists too if u can. it does stick. and if u go up to the promoter at the end of the night and say "how come u always book the same people?" or "the mc's tonight were too much" or "i'd like to see so and so" they will take that into account. i'm sick of hearing people say they want better, more respectable drum and bass music and mc's at the clubs and a wider array of talent, but we all know if someone tried to throw a "liquid" night w/ heads on the lineup who are pushing s**t forward right now and no mc's or mc's that don't just babble, u'd be lucky to get 100 people. myself, audio angel and devoe never even got a request for a proper show in la so ask yourselves if u really even want change. personally, im tired of playin other people's tunes. and im tired of trying to smash it every time i play having someone babbling over my set ruining the moment and the vibe for me. i'm not playing locally as often but i am initiating change. and considering how small and connected this scene is, we can all create change but u have to act and not just bitch about it every 3 months on a forum. and results don't just happen over night b/c since i started singing, not only have i witnessed the "politics" of the mc game, but i realize that there really isn't soo much of a place for me w/ what i'm doing which is progressive, musically oriented drum and bass w/ vocals. i wish more mc's in la would try to vocalize (sing) and actually write lyrics and put out tunes!

"be the change you wish to see in the world"

Re: socal dnb and its MCs...

right, i guess my thread that i've posed, i'm constituted a "hater" when i merely posted my opinion on a forum that is designed for reviews, opinions, and criticism (good and bad).

BTW, DJs to MCs to Audience all need each other, but most importantly, DJs and MCs are who they are, because of the people who come to see them.

Never hated on anyone in this so cal scene, MC or DJ.

Re: socal dnb and its MCs...

You know who I'm sick of? Fucking architects. I see all these s**t building in Socal and I'm like: you f**king architects need to get your s**t together. Make a pretty building, not all these ugly f**king buildings. How many times have I driven down Sunset and seen nothing but s**t ugly ass buildings.

Fucking architects.

Re: socal dnb and its MCs...

word, personally, i am not calling anyone a hater or any name calling (cause for 1 i never take the internetz too seriously). i just say that artists have to recognize what the peeps/promoters/djs want (then decide how to proceed creatively) and on the flip the peeps/promoters/djs have to know who they are booking and can't expect them to not be what they are. i wouldn't take a booking if they asked me to only sing like Jenna G or rhyme like Conrad (that is why they are them so go book them) nor would i book a show and ask Craze to not scratch or Andy C to to play only drumfunk for example...

if u want change demand it to the proper peoples or just make it urself

Re: socal dnb and its MCs...

XYZ- yes, your words do get thru to me, i understand. If i ever do come across my gripe with the right person, i will do so. I'm not hear to hate on anyone, like i said, im just hear to support this scene i love so much. So my misinterpretation of "s**t talking" is not what i want to do- but only constructively criticize, and hopefully they dont take it personal.

You hate architects too? I dont hate them as much as the f**king billboards specifically designed for me to see on the highway.

Re: socal dnb and its MCs...

I think you addresed the situation fine, this s**t comes up often, FOR A REASON.

The fact is we have talented motherf**kers with the mic in this city, I know I could name a bunch. They need to constantly be given real feedback from people that care, not the homey after the party that always says "dude you killed it!".

Anyone who knows me and has worked with me, knows I am very particular who has a mic on any stage I am involved with. I think there needs to be more of a professional approach to mc'ing here in LA, there are a few that know exactly how to conduct themselves, but everyone of them needs constructive criticism as do WE ALL. I know I want people to tell me how an event can be a better experience as a whole, and alot of times, the mc's are the main point being addressed.

If your booked on a party to mc the dnb stage, show up ready to do whats best for the party, not your mc'ing career. Your not there to out mc the other mc who is standing next to you waiting for the mic, your there for a very important reason, to connect the crowd with the dj, its that simple. I think just eliminating the extra random chatting alone would make a significant impact. If your not booked for a party and show up and talking your way on to the stage (it happens every f**king show) then chill out and wait for the promoter to give you the head nod that its ok to go up and spit a over a couple tracks, do your things and gracefully step down. No recycled rhymes, come original or dont come at all, it gets real old, and people notice.

I know, its very rudundant, but needs constant addressing, and its not likely that someone will go up to an artist and tell them constructive criticism. I know I have attempted that and all I get is a very defensive attitude back.

Bottom line is our mc's are good, some of them great, but this is LA, and we want the best
