God I miss this guy!!!

My god of tech who revolutionized the genre and then left.. maybe its like jimi, kurt or even chappelle show, it was best that we lost him in his prime.

One of the highlights of my dj career is still opening for him in the basement of the orion in front of a packed house. hardest part was not playing all konflict and kemal tracks.

The guy has anthems all over his resume.

Messiah- possibly the biggest anthem ever, the new electro remix is even big because of the original

Fuckin hostile- hate to be redundant, but this is also possibly the biggest anthem ever, and the exclusivity of it raises it to a thing of legend.

Possesion remix- took the original and made it look like a bitch.

...etc...


If I had a terminal disease I would use my \"make a wish\" to sit in kemals studio and just listen to him play reese lines for a couple hours with varying filters. as i sat their with my hand in the air making those reese line claws. grasping at air with my open and closing palm as the reese goes up and down.

Thats funny. I picked him up at the hotel the next day after the Orion show. That show was the nail in the coffin. The Orion tripped him out so hard it was the straw that broke the camels back.
He retired soon thereafter.

Earlier that year he brought his Mum out to L.A and they both stayed with me for about a week on a vacation of sorts, Kemal is not only a very talented producer but a very deep thinker to boot. He almost moved to L.A (and moved in with me as i had a spare room at the time) just after he'd lived in Puerto Rico for a minute, but instead moved to France to work with a French Mc friend of his.
I've always wondered what it would have been like if he'd moved here.
I lost contact with him soon thereafter as did most people who were close to him.
I wish him and his family the best but often wonder if he'll return to the scene at some point or just get in contact.

wow, thanks sam, that is a great update. I always heard from others that he was an incredibly smart and quiet type of guy, thats probably one of the reasons he was so prolific. I'm sorry to hear about the Orion show being a tipping point. God knows that place was nothing but bad juju at that point in time. The promoters weren't exactly good businessmen, notorious for stiffing dj's. That really sucks ass if that had a lasting effect on one of the greatest. I had always heard that he was on his way out after the now infamous messiah/clayton thing (which is funny because they even mention that s**t on wackapedia). It's clear from his dnb tunes and his newer personal project that he has an immense respect for his personal tradition and culture, which would lead to loftier ideas. It's just bittersweet to loose such an amazing artist because of the scene. Nothing but respect for the man.

One of my best memories of Kemal
is when Origin brought him out to play
Progress in Culver City on a Sunday night,
the night after Nation 2000 in Dtown L.A.

I remember The Bar Azure
was pretty packed.
One of the most intimate shows (bar was so small)
with one of the greatest producers ever.

If I'm not mistaken,
I think Origin first had scheduled
someone else from Nation 2000,
but that fell through, (possibly Tech Itch & Decoder).
Kemal stepped up to the plates.

Its just to bad the super Reecey dnb just doesnt pull right in the club these days.

Tech has always been where my heart lyes..... its simply amazing how many toons Kemal and Rob data have put out. Man they had a banger on "Killa Bytes" cant remember the name of it though.

Great thread though areo its nice to talk about artists that arent Jump up, electro or dubstep.

I know some day I will get old and grey and there will always be one thing I remember about DnB and thats TECH!!!!!!

he's a very spiritual guy too..partly why he left. from what i got from him the few times we talked, i understand that music production is a lot deeper for him then just writing beats and drum and bass wasn't cuttin it for him anymore.

Fuck yeah! Nation to this day is my favorite party ever. Sooo many heads on the bill, everyone murdered it, the stage in the middle of those brick buidings was amazing! After that night it was like dnb, at least for what the LA scene had witnessed before then had purely changed, literally overnight. The sound those UK heads brought that night was something to cherish and I will never forget it. I remember everyone from the other rooms spilling into the dnb area, aww the memories! And didn't Kemal or one of the dj's knock some dude out that tried to crawl up on stage? It was during the Konflict set I remember that much.

Almost forgot about Nation! That was my very first massive and my favorite. I think it was Deacon who got into a scrap?? Not sure... That huge ass gorilla was off the meat racks. I really miss that location. I think it's American Apparel's warehouse now. I was just there and it looked really familiar. They also used that spot in Fast and the Furious.
