**********

1) Why do you want to see Pendulum

2) What do you think about the direction Pendulum is taking their music and drum'n'bass

3) What is your favorite part of the Mayan

**********
1) I have seen Pendulum (or a couple of them) do a dj set before and liked it a lot. I have also been a fan of their tunes since "the vault" was a big hit. I like how they have their own distinct sound that you can recognize right away (per my "wtf, was that pendulum on the VMA's" thread). Once I heard that they are doin the live band thing I knew i had to see that. I am a drummer and have been wanting to do a live DNB band since 2002ish and haven't really found people to collab with thus making me anxious to see how they have spun it.

2) I am not 100% sure as to the direction they are taking their music but would really like to see first hand where they are taking it. (more support for #1)
As far as more live elements in DnB, I think that is very cool. I really like hearing/watching dj's but it is also very cool to see really good musicians. From a drummers perspective... I am always thinkin about how cool it is to hear/see live drummers doin those ill beats. (like the jungle drummer n KJsawka)

3) I dont know as I HAVE NEVER BEEN!! =/ (more support for #1 see Pendulum @ the MAYAN) I have been to countless shows in LA and surrounding areas and have heard nothing but good things about the mayan. From many legendary concerts there, to the awesome architecture, to the great sound, I have heard it rocks all the way around. (even my MOM says i have to go there) Guess my favorite part of it is the mystery of it... til i get to go.

**also the first to respond =P**

Re: Pendulum @ The Mayan Ticket Giveaway: 5 pairs to give ou

1.) There's nothing better to do on a Monday night at 8pm than go see one of my favorite dj/producer crews in an element I've never witnessed before but only heard about - LIVE! The drum and bass music that Pendulum makes is so wonderful. And lively. And fun.

2.) Pendulum has been pushing the direction of DNB in different directions for a long while, popularizing drum & bass outside of the typical dnb circles. Not only that when I hear the music it brings out the freak in me. I start moving in directions that I didn't otherwise know existed.

3.) My favorite part of the Mayan is the bar. Drinks, drinks, and then some more drinks! Yea thats the plan when I'm on the list I'm gonna get taaanked if I win this contest!

Re: Pendulum @ The Mayan Ticket Giveaway: 5 pairs to give ou

1.Ive never seen them do the live show before. I heard their live show was amazing. Im very curious to find out for myself.

2. I really like how they are doing their own thing and doing It big! They are taking DnB to another level which some say is a bad thing. I have to disagree. I personally don't really consider them DnB anymore. More so, an electronic rock band. Thats the kind of stuff that got me into all this anyway.

3. I read in the guiness book of world records that the Mayan has the biggest disco ball in the world. Thats awesome!

Re: Pendulum @ The Mayan Ticket Giveaway: 5 pairs to give ou

1. Why Do I want to see Pendulum?
Well i've been listening to Drum 'n' Bass for 9 years, and quite frankly, Pendulum is the first group of artists that sucked me into the world of drum 'n' bass. I started listening to drum 'n' bass because of pendulum, being at the age of 14, these sounds were fresh, innovative, and most importantly, catchy.

One of my first bassrush parties celebrated at the Vanguard included seeing El Hornet on the decks. I could never forget that night (plus that video set is on dnbtv!) I've bought most of their albums, including mixes such as Jungle sounds, and their newest album insilico.

I've never seen Pendulum Live, and i've been waiting for a day where i get to hear that they will play Live in LA. I've vouched that I must see them perform if they do come out to play live. NOW's the chance!!!!

2. What do you think of the direction Pendulum is taking their music and drum 'n' bass

The direction does not surprise me, as they first consisted of 3 people who actually threw live sets on tour for Hold Your Colour. But for this new album, there sounds that we've all been used to has now been tweaked. I can get down with it, but i like the old Pendulum sounds a lot better. I have respect for them trying something new, and breaking new grounds for the dnb community, since this is what Pendulum is best known for doing. Breaking new grounds and new territory, Pendulum is just that; doing what Pendulum does best.

3. What is your favorite part of the mayan
Lol, everything is my favorite part of the mayan, because i've never been there! A lot of my friends have been there before once, and they've told me it's an awesome venue. Never had a chance to go there, because I never heard of any shows that I wanted to go to that ever landed a gig at that venue. Now that i've heard that Pendulum is dropping by, I have a big reason of going to this venue now.

1. Ive seen Pendulum DJ sets and the energy is pretty amazing. Ever since "Vault" was played at a "World of Drum & Bass Event" some time ago when it was on dubplate they have pretty much cemented themselves as players in the drum & bass genere. As a drum & Bass fan it almost seems mandatory i see how they live aspect of there show is. Plus a girl im dating is really into them and it would be an awesome date!

2. Lots of people have mixed feelings about Pendulum and the direction they are taking the music. Some people want to keep it underground, while others like Pendulum work hard to diversify the music we see in the same format week in and week out. I think it takes alot of time and energy and i can def appreciate the hustle they bring. Im all for diversity.

3. I cant say ive ever been to the Mayan, but after checking out their website i must say im pretty impressed. The archetecture looks pretty amazing. I am def interested in check it out just from the virtual tour the website provides.

1) Why do you want to see Pendulum

2) What do you think about the direction Pendulum is taking their music and drum'n'bass

3) What is your favorite part of the Mayan

1} I want to see Pendulum because they are the most inovative group in drum and bass and they are one of my favorite producer/dj's in the scene still today. The first time I heard them I didn't even know I was hearing there track. A friend of mine gave me a mix cd, and it was titled mix 1. I had no idea who the dj was and who's tracks were on the mix. I was listening to the mix when all of a sudden there was this new sound. I was so intrigued. I had no idea who they were but I was immediately a huge fan. I called my friend right away. It was 1am in the morning sunday night. Luckly for my friend he is a night owl. He told me the name of this new super group was Pendulum and "The Vault" was the name of the track and I knew these guys were different. Since then I think I have seen them play everytime they have been in LA. One of my all time favorite albums is colors too.

2] There are things about their music that I am not so hype on but the things that I am not so keen on are the things that make them good. There new music that I have heard has a new sound that is very commercial but that's what makes it good. We need someone to bring more attention to all the hard working producers, dj's, and promoters (this includes jungle scene). The house dj's and top 40 dj's are making so much money and it time that our DnB guys & gals come up and hopefuly Pendulum can help make that happen with there commercial music.

3) Truthfully I have only been outside of this venue promoting but from what I have heard this venue fits perfectly with what I am say ing in the above paragraph. I think DnB needs to be showcased at the mainstream venues. I was excited to see that they are playing at such an upscale location. that huge artists have played at before. I want to see our scene blow up like in London. I want to see our producers on the pop charts.

1.Why do I want to see Pendulum

I think the fact that they're coming around as a live act shows us again just how progressive Pendulum really is!
(Anyone else remember hearing their Essential Mix for the 1st time?)

2. What do you think of the direction...

They are not one part or person, and they never have been.
But what they always have been is a pre-arranged collection of creatively compiled sounds, attempting to push the envelope to expand upon what we think we know about Drum n Bass.

3. What do you think of the Mayan-

That I don't have 30k to throw a party there!!

Re: Pendulum @ The Mayan Ticket Giveaway: 5 pairs to give ou

I just took a lunch break at my desk today and wrote this about it. It is long, uncut and not edited.. but whatever.

So many of us are quick to categorize an artist, so that we can palate them equally. Divide and conquer. However there are some artists that just can not be put into any one category. And their talent, their art, and even themselves are a constant source for debate.

Pendulum. Tick.

After being exposed to Drum and Bass and Jungle, my view on music, politics, love, and what I wanted to do with my life became skewed. I use the word expose because it really was the bare naked exposure of this music, this beat, this bass, this group of people that pushed me into the bassbins of my own self being. Rob "Machete" exposed me by simply handing me a piece of paper that said "RESPECT." This would forever change my life.

From that fateful moment on the patio of the Century City club when it was called Butterfly; I have now been forced to question music, its meaning, it configuration, its drops, lows, and highs. No longer could I stomach radio friendly music, or its supporters. I have now become a junglist. A solider.

Pendulum. Tock.

1 am, RESPECT Anniversary party. March, musty, dark, bass rattling the ice in my cocktail. Line outside waiting to get in, everyone packed into Larchmont, after its 3rd incarnation of what would become my own private Idaho; I heard the crowd buzzing with "El Hornet" is here. Pendulum, El Hornet, crazy, metal, drum and bass, Down under, intense. These words floated around the air in this anticipation that made me wonder what was I really in store for? Is this for real, or is this just the usual agreement with the crowd so as not to be the hurt gazelle to be taken down for saying how they really felt about the line up.

Then it happened. A sound I had never heard before in my early jungle existence. What the hell is going on? I can barely breathe, my heart is pounding, I am sweating, I am taking off my shirt, I am hugging people around me, did I teleport to some crazy rave from 93'? Did someone slip something into my drink? I am freaking out. The next two hours have become so engraved in my mind, I called in sick the day after RESPECT and found every single piece of information on this Pendulum. I found out it was not just a DJ, but they are a band, a mixture of this crazy sound, with vocals, and collaborations. This proved that I need to now put them up there in my "At all costs" list of bands to see.

Pendulum. Tick.

The Goldenvoice organization proved, much like the RESPECT crew did; that they had a finger on the pulse of what should be given a platform. Pendulum, live, full band, new music, me front and center 2008 - Big white tent. Intro started much like the videos and reviews I have read, and reread. I watched in awe as they opened, Their sound is like Pavlov's dog stimulus now. I became high instantly, not knowing which way was up or down. I looked around the crowd looking for some connection and I found it, over and over again. Crank, Ice, Coke, Crack, Meth. X, LSD, Weed. Hooked. This show was the highlight of my weekend and year. I finally saw them live. I need it again. I just have this feeling now when I even see their name. Their music being a backdrop to so many moments. Any opportunity, is well; a chance to feel that moment again.

Pushing the sound of Drum and Bass is like pushing a brick wall off a cliff of acceptance waters. For every track Pendulum or really any artist makes coming from one genre; it is met head on by resistance. It is judged, rated, and sometimes rejected at first until someone drops it at the right moment. A vast majority don't take a track for what it is; an artistic expression. Artists like Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, Banksy, have produced less than stellar pieces in my opinion. I put it with the pieces I do treasure, and see the beauty in the completeness of the artist. Not every song from Pendulum is well received by me. Pendulum's pyramid of solid foundation of music with top peaking songs, does blur the lines of genres, what is mainstream, what is radio friendly, and what is an artist in this technologically advance world.

Pendulum. Tock.

And with the area we live in, Southern California we sometimes forget how lucky we are. We are lucky for the basics in life, no doubt. Are hierarchy of needs are met and exceeded. It is this town itself that also feeds us. We have beautiful mixed races, ethnicities, groups of people from all over the world. We have architecture, halls, theatres, and venues that have not been touched by the Photoshop fairy. It is rare these days to find a building with intact moldings, stages, real sculptures from days past. The Mayan is a historical landmark in Los Angeles. As the gentrification continues of downtown, it is important to support, respect, and invigorate these types of establishments to preserve for the next generation. From the Pre-Columbian Mayan statues, sculptures, and large stone like grades much like a Mayan temple; to the large stage, sound, and modern tucked away bars. It feels powerful just to be in it before any music starts.

Getting tickets or not, it needs to be expressed that people need to see this show. From the naysayers, to the fans, to the doubters and haters. They don't come often for the time being. In a town where we have music festivals, one offs, and undergrounds it is hard to get behind a one act concert for a ticket price plus "fees." This is not just a regular tour, which we will see the band again in a couple of months or next season. Tour of the Americas is the name of it; with a date targeting Southern California; where we are a huge impact on the world scene of music.

Haters, doubters, skeptics consider this a challenge from Pendulum. They are coming on our home turf with no gloves on. Time to pony up kids and wager. I expect a full review from everyone who goes.

I don't know, in the end of it all…. I just want to see them alright? Is that so wrong?

Re: Pendulum @ The Mayan Ticket Giveaway: 5 pairs to give ou

Well i figured why be 'too cool' to enter for some tix - here are my answers .

1) Why do you want to see Pendulum?

- Well I play drums/percussion (for 14 years), and have played drumnbass on the kit for 9 years , getting into DNB thru Dara , DB , Desil, RAW, Rinse/Flux , and the like back in '98. I'd love to experience what Pendulum have evolved into - from a punk band down under, to big dnb producers, to a rockstar dnb band; since I've followed them from their near inception when Condord Dawn started helping them blow up. I've seen El Hornet spin breaks and dnb at Temple of Boom bbq, in the lobby a couple of years back and it'd be great to reconnect w that sound in a massive legendary venue! It'd be cool if they did a live version of 'Spiral' or ' Hollywood' the collab btwn Elhornet and Gridlock.

2) What do you think about the direction Pendulum is taking their music and drum'n'bass?

- I think that what they are doing to bring their music to the masses is a great diplomatic thing; though it comes with heavy responsibility. It's always the legendary quandary or catch-22 as an artist - Do I take my sound to the masses? Do I sign that HUGE record deal with Universal and merge with Rock and Pop?

As artists coming from the underground of punk and electronic culture , promotion and gigs;Pendulum has sky-rocketed themselves to the upper-upper echelon which puts so much pressure on them, and they've handled it well.
Am I a fan of EVERY tune? no , although as a musician, a dj, a producer - I can say - _respect_ - and appreciate that they have gone further with the dnb sound in a way that makes it available to a wide audience. You can't observe matter on the atomic level with out effecting it in some way, and that is true on the largest of scales - Every realization of music is the same way, and Pendulum has effected and influenced a great deal of music.

3) What is your favorite part of the Mayan -

The dancefloor beneath the gogo dancers ! but what an epic venue, huge celings, massive sound, super long bar ,what is there to dislike?

Peace.

Re: Pendulum @ The Mayan Ticket Giveaway: 5 pairs to give ou

1) Why do you want to see Pendulum

2) What do you think about the direction Pendulum is taking their music and drum'n'bass

3) What is your favorite part of the Mayan

You have until next Friday at 5pm to write your answers in here.

***********************************

1) Pendulum is a group who continues to define and redefine the boundaries of the drum & bass landscape. In spite of scores of naysayers and haters trolling the halls of 'venerable' drum & bass institutions such as DOA and the like, Pendulum continues to push forward, striking new chords and changing formats and structures in a genre where acceptance is often granted on the basis of joining the old boys club and working within the confines of the status quo. What sets Pendulum apart from this network is exactly the reason I would like to see Pendulum. I want to experience firsthand the music of a group whose work is guided by their own artistic vision and not the vision of their peers and predecessors who have already staked their claim and carved out the rules for all who dare step inside the drum & bass arena.

2) In various configurations and ensembles we have seen drum & bass deejays and producers incorporate new elements and apply their sound to a live format in an attempt to elevate the drum & bass experience. In Pendulum we see the reverse, a live ensemble that has expanded their musical scope and ambition by transforming their sound into an electronic manifestation of itself. There is no doubt that Pendulum has blurred the lines between rock and jungle, as evidenced by the blistering controversy that follows every new release. True, the appeal has not always been consistent with my personal tastes. Pendulum’s tracks oft contain catchy, radio friendly synth-guitar melodies, and vocal hooks that would instantly have me reaching for the dial if it was just some rock anthem broadcasting over the FM airwaves. But, for each facet about Pendulum that does not resonate with me, there is another equally fresh and exciting component of their music that is inspiring and invigorating at the same time, and one can’t help but cave in and surrender to the intoxicating rhythms when hearing Pendulum’s exceptionally well engineered music on a crisp and low-end heavy soundsystem.

3) Not having ever stepped foot inside the venue, there is not a whole lot I can say in regards to the Mayan. Hopefully, after seeing Pendulum I will be able to write an entire book on which part of this historic downtown venue is my favorite – whether it be the striking architecture or the ancient indigenous Mayan artwork that accents each room. If the Pendulum show is half as good as it is shaping up to be, I know my favorite part of the Mayan will be whatever part of the dancefloor I am stuck to when their set starts (followed closely by whichever bar makes the strongest drinks).

Good thinking Eek. I agree the redraw wouldn't have been fair, cuz if I won already - I would have been pissed!

Re: Pendulum @ The Mayan Ticket Giveaway: 5 pairs to give ou

Hmmm.... I don't think that would be the correct course because you already had the chance to have your name drawn five times - where as I didn't ever have the chance to have my name drawn...

In any case, I think Eek's resolution was sound - and if he changes his position I'll live with it.

Re: Pendulum @ The Mayan Ticket Giveaway: 5 pairs to give ou

Well here's the deal, if I did a redraw with just the remaining tickets, that wouldn't be fair to djhwizard either because you guys already had you chance and he didn't get a chance at all. so i'm giving him the tickets because i made a mistake.

i talked to goldenvoice and they're hooking up a 6th pair which will go to djwhizard. djw please email me your full name.
