One of the worst things about Drum N Bass is...

one of the worst things about DNB is the availability of tunes. I was thinking about all of the great songs that I was very fortunate to hear when I used to purchase vinyl years and years ago. Sure, you can get on beatport or torrent sites and grab current stuff, well known songs and anthems but what about the really amazing, hard hitting b-sides that only the Dj's know about? I have a long list of songs that I can only hear in my head because the songs are either out of print or super rare. I understand that the business model of most electronic labels cannot support constant pressing of stuff that does not sell but there has to be some way around this. I might be reaching but I have to wonder how this phenomenon can affect history in that some artist will only be known for their well known efforts and not the bigger picture. I suppose if i really wanted tunes I would invest in a turn table and start buying up vinyl(or write pleading letters to labels to let me buy what ever old stuff they have), but not everybody has that option or space to hold a thousand odd records.

Re: One of the worst things about Drum N Bass is...

Totally agree with u Raun, i think DnB's business model is the worst s**t ever. Never in music do hot songs get kept from the public who craves them until by the time they do come out they are "ehhh". It is like u build the buzz, then it reaches itz height then u release the tune when peeps have moved on. Dillinja seemed to hit the buzz at the right time when he released s**t, but idk...i think it hurts DnB's shelf life too. I work in music publishing and the point of publishing is to let your music work/make money for you. I hear people complain about not making $$$ making tunes and i think that you can make money if u reinvent ur business model cause the dnb one is a complete failure (hence why u must DJ to make money...there are no just producers). Love dnb, but on the producing -> making $ off of ur song model it is atrocious. Surprisingly people do buy songs of things they like and have access to, but if u keep things likethe gate keeper then people will have a lassiez-faire attitude about actively seeking ur product.

Re: One of the worst things about Drum N Bass is...

Couldn't agree more. Not only does the average fan have NO idea of what songs they liked when they went out last night (because, of course, there are no lyrics, and usually no hint as to the song title), but even if they can find the track name, good luck finding that record on any CD.

If they could find that track on CD, when they get it home, the track sounds weird--it's much longer and more repetitive than what they remember (because, of course, the DJ didn't mix into or out of it), and, if they're like me, the track sounds way more laid back because there's no MC on top of it.

Shit, I remember MY first DnB CD, which I bought the night after I saw Roni Size & crew play at the End after they'd just won the Mercury prize back in 1997. I had s**t my PANTS the night before, pretty much thought the show was the best thing ever, but when I got New Forms home, the only track that sounded anything like what I heard the night before was "share the fall." Looking back, I realize that all I'd heard the night before was Dope Dragon rollers, but s**t--that's what I wanted to hear at home! And what happened to that dude Dynamite, who had made everything more exciting the night before with his MCing?

Thus began my life of being a non-DJ dnb lover, and CD buyer, and thus began my life of ultimate disappointment, with one CD after another not coming anywhere near the exciting tracks I heard out each week.

Thats why i love things like the back 2 back sessions. They usually have track listings and phat mixes to melt ur ears off.

Re: One of the worst things about Drum N Bass is...

Some of the worst things about Drum N Bass
I realize I will get flamed s**tless for this but;
1. Why is the headliner on 12 or 1am? Afraid of an
older crowd, that might bring money? Does any
other form of entertainment do this?
2. Why is it free? Charge me $10 bucks, give me
a good show, hope yall get paid.
3. Tracklistings...I have no need to listen to your mix
if I see the listings, I already know what it sounds
like, element of suprise is negated.
4. Meaningless "psychadelic" light shows....graphics
can provoke thought and excitement...see banksy
5. Dancing....I absolutely love what the bboy's, bgirls
and brockers do, but if people danced together it
would draw more peeps, give them a reason to swoop...
6. For cdr's, somehow display the track your playing on
a screen, might look cheesy, might promote sales..

oh this is going to hurt lurking is easier

Re: One of the worst things about Drum N Bass is...

funny that it would be assumed that i would come and post some hate everything but the music!

thanks for the responses

@xyz glad to know that my post was not the sound of one hand clapping.

thanks for all the links for places to buy records, i've known about these places before most of them even had websites! i'm not a vinyl head! i'm a sofa raver that loves to listen to the stuff in head phones or through monitors. i can seriously listen to a dj formatted track from beginning to end and not get bored. Unless you buy vinyl you are assed out with finding goodies! I want to give labels my money, I want to give artists my monies! But i cannot because everything is on vinyl and what is available in digital formate is stuff that was very much released recently or an anthem. Last I checked I had a hard time finding say AC 031-Decoder & Substance "Heist / Curvature" in digital format. It's an example of one of those things that didn't make too much noise overall and is hard to find in a format that is non mixed, and not in vinyl format.

which.....i effing spoke somewhat on time and soon, but youtube is amazing in some ways

those two decoder and substance tracks i mentioned?
found on youtube. search time? 30 seconds.
the problem? HORRIBLE quality and nobody gets any of my money.

HEY! keep it on topic, PLEASE. I dont want this to be a bitch out session, I am trying to have a legitimate conversation about music distribution in DnB.

Re: One of the worst things about Drum N Bass is...

I agree with a lot of the sentiment here.

There's a big problem with the way this stuff gets out. Sometimes I really just get sick of hearing music in my head that I can't identify. How many bassdrive.com streamrips do I keep on my hard drive just to play back a certain couple segments? Good god it is such a pain identifying that stuff! I could fill up this forum with trackid threads. Who do you burden with that?

At the very least, DJs need to be willing to ID a track when asked. I hear something I like, I want to hear it again, period. Yeah, I've trainspotted hoping to catch a glimpse of the record label or something to go off of. YouTube has been very helpful, of course, but the nature of techno just makes things hard to track down. How you gonna describe that bitchin ass track DJ Funkypants laid down last night? "Oh yeah, it had a sort of amen thing goin on with the wobbly bass... sounded like a reece hi-passed with an electro stab... went WING WONG WING WONG wahwahwahwahWOOOOOOOOONG"?!

The idea of a marquee displaying the currently playing track is awesome. How many DJs are really that organized though?

I also wanted to add that I don't mind listening to DJ formatted tracks. If it's really that boring, my iPod has a nice scrub wheel and Winamp makes it easy to skip around. Trust me, trance singles are WAY harder to listen to... Worst comes to worst I can dump that s**t in Sound Forge and make my own edits.

Can I ask if anybody knows where to find a specific tune? It's old and i know the name of the tune but not where to find it...I even asked the dj who played it on his mix but didnt get the producers name. bad on my part.

Yeah Man,

Just listening to a mix my bredrin Quest made in 98. The man loved to exclusively throw down Bsides from Moving Shadow to Re_Inforced, and it was just a wicked ting to run toons that everyone else was rinsin the A Sides too.

I say back to vinyl and exploring Bsides, some of them have been pure gems that in my opinion outshone the A side subliminally.

You know what I mean?

Re: One of the worst things about Drum N Bass is...

i thought that was one of the best things!!! when you hear a tune and it blows your mind, you don't know what it is and you search for it.. ask around.. and years later when you finally get the tune you feel like you have even accomplished something.. and the tune reminds you of the first time you heard it, the seach, and then finding it!!!!

maybe that's just me? haha

anyways check out the online digital sites, a lot of older labels are uploading their back catalogue so they are available digitally
