Re: moshing & dnb ...

I don't know: at the Lovefest up here a few weeks back, the DnB float had a good 1000 people plus losing their s**t, and a pit opened up in the middle of it. I thought it was funny, and really amped up the energy/mayhem . .

and then thankfully ended about 15 minutes later.

I'm not gonna tell people to stop moshing, but I appreciate the low volume of mosh pits at dnb events.

According to proper_rx ...

1. Old annoying topic
AGREED

2. STFU and get out of the pit if you don't like it.
Sometimes you don't cross the pit, the pit crosses you. Not to mention it leads to fights, girls getting elbowed in the face, drinks getting knocked on the ground, and precious dancefloor space getting used up by people skipping around in a circle elbowing girls in the face (on accident).

3. If you're an MC or DJ... Why are you going to hate on the ppl showing you the most energy?
I don't hate on people showing energy or dancing (even if they dance terrible, it is always appreciated). However, moshing often prevents lots of other people from having as good of a time. It is kind of a selfish reaction to music, i.e. "get the f**k out of my way - I want to push people and use up other people's personal space, and if you don't like it, f**k you!"

4. STFU and get out of the pit if you don't like it!

Re: moshing & dnb ...

In terms of space, I actually get more irritated with the breakdancers. That is, at least moshers are "using" the space they steal from the dancefloor. But the b-boys demand a wide-open zone circle where they can show off. If they're in the back, fine, but when they come into the middle of a packed floor and demand I step aside so they can put on a show to compete with the show I came to see?

Not. Bloody. Likely.

Re: moshing & dnb ...

In LA, that used to be somewhat of an issue... but in the last four years or so, the break circles almost always form in the back or side of the club. Almost never in front of the DJ in main dancefloor realty.

The breaking/popping community shows mad love and support for dnb, and venues like Respect have incorporated them in with DNB by having BBOY nites, having them perform on stage with the DJ, etc. etc. It has been a good combination.

@ eecue: no, it isn't really an issue anymore.

Honestly, the occasional pit that isn't too rowdy or out of control doesn't really bother me. Its cool to see people get really into a track and just go off, but if it happened on a regular basis, it would get pretty annoying having to worry about staying away from the pit all the time.

I am fine with moshing @ D&B shows as long as the people in the pit are respectful of people who do not want to participate.

This reminds me of the time I saw a 100 person pit open up during a Marcus Intelex set, that was amusing...

Mosh and what not. But be aware of who you are running into.. Proper moshing is NOT PUSHING PEOPLE WITH YOUR ARMS.

I see cats full on lunging towards other people with arms at eye level. That is attacking.. They are not even listening to the music.

i think it should be acceptable under one condition.

when the Pendulem remix of Linkin Park is played.

also i believe, and i'm sure 4.phrantik.4 can back me up on this, but the power unleashed from Pendulem remixing Linkin Park will either create anti-matter, or open a wormhole to the 2nd dimension as punishment for allowing such perversions to be created.

i also believe the Large Hadron Collider is working on this remix project as well.

Re: moshing & dnb ...

"your chasing all the pretty girls away... girls don't like moshing...."

That was the story of the demise of girls coming to DATABASS back in the days...and Q knows it. Take a page out of your Junglist Elders book:

When DATABASS first started there was maaaaaaad girls coming through, even though it was a real sketchy neighborhood.
However, after a couple of times getting a $10 cosmopolitan getting spilled down their new blouse and then being smashed into the bar by some manic junglist...they began to disappear... extremely quickly.

The vibe back then was dark ass grimey tech step bidnezz, so it was real cool to see girls come thru and support....but soon they got scared away and it ended up being a sausage fest.

Djing to a bunch of stoned, headnodding dudes in hoodies is how I love to spend my Saturday nights........................................................NOT!

A word of advice...If you want the gal dem there, act like a gentleman and show them some respect...if you wanna see them disappear and turn the club into "Man United" then go right ahead and keep on moshin dude!

The one exception for me (and I know girls mosh too and I know I've moshed with the wreckntion crew and at other various shows) it did seem quite fitting at Pendulum the other night....Guitars and mosh pits seem to go hand in hand....moshing with turntables around doesn't seem like such a good idea, it makes the records skip bruv....innit!

Re: moshing & dnb ...

I use to love to mosh ...to punk rock. But i understand the desire to do so to some dnb - its that similar energy that was part of the strong gravitational pull of dnb on me from the beginning. It was rebel music. punk was about like that to.
But to me part of being rebellious - was/is to NOT be selfish - . I remember being at a show with X - and i was into it... But most people - surprise surprise - were standing around not dancing or just moving around. I was pumped -i thought myself a tough little anarchist then - i didn't go launching myself into someone in front of me - i just stayed within an area and threw elbows et al and didn't involve people who otherwise didn't want to be involved. I prob looked like that classic drawing of a punk rocker (circle-jerks?) throwing his limbs around

I've seen some massive pits at like RATM shows or others... They look amazing - like a hurricane of people...
oh well, you know people get drunk get hyped- I've gotten involved with pits too.

Including one time i was recruited by a certain someone during a rave - to go out into the E-crusted crowd and ...push it around some...mischievous - not really cool - not my vibe really - plus some of the young ones didn't understand - they looked kind of hurt... i felt bad...

Other times I remember coming home from shows in LA with a sore back from getting smacked from behind as people were moshing - i was just trying to dance and basically acted as a shield for friends who were up in front of me - who otherwise would have been
knocked around by flying sweaty jungleist ...

lets just be careful out there ok? pick each other up

My name is johnny rotten, and i approve this message.

Re: moshing & dnb ...

moshing? not anymore, but years and years and years ago I remember having a blast moshing. And its not moshing in the rock sense, its just a jumble of arms and legs owned by people who get overwhelmed by the overall vibe of the scene, its a slightly on beat thing that embodies the energy of the music.

That said, when I did it it was never with malicious intent and if you weren't into it none of the participants dragged unwilling people in. In fact I remember a few times where the moshing was just for a particular song, once the song was pulled from the mix people would revert to the normal program and just sort of look at each other like "whoa, that was FREAKING AWESOME!"

So the lesson is this, dont be a dick when you go crazy to music, this aint woodstock pt2 OR pt3, so dont try to take the energy and convert into some evil alt energy that consumes the party.

Re: moshing & dnb ...

Honestly, Moshing is not that annoying as long as it's held at a modest level. However, when people really start getting into the "i don't give a f**k" mood, then it really f**ks up my vibe.

For instance, many times at respect and bassrush events i've seen moshers just dance in a circle, lightly pushing each other, considering the people on the outside of the circle and dont even touch them. NOW that's ok

The itmes when MC questionmark actually stops the music just cuz of the stupid mosh pits get out of hand. NOW that's bad.

Just how there is a responsible level of drinking, there is a responsible level of moshing in dnb events.
