LA DnB Is More Exciting than London DnB
Yo, so I was in London last week, and I gotta say: LA has passed it for DnB excitement. Don't get me wrong, the crowds were HUGE (the Playaz night at Fabric must have been 5000 or so), the people were generally pretty cool and the soundsystems probably still win. But in terms of energy--from the crowds, from the DJ's, from the MC's--LA has got it beat.
Big ups you so-cal bastards. If you don't already, appreciate what you've got. |

Re: LA DnB Is More Exciting than London DnB
I had thought the same thing last time I was there, but this confirmed it. At Swerve (Fabio's night at the End), and then again at Fabric (and previously at Movement and some big one-offs), it hit me that LA just has more electricity in the air. The people seem to be more into the music, are certainly more willing to throw it up, and the vibe just smells fresher (and so do the people, haha).
Not to diss London, which always rules, but only to big up LA. |

From what I've heard the majority of the UK crowds are more or less people out letting off steam and partying. Not every other person a DJ or promoter like in the states. |

I"m going to have to disagree. I just got back from London yesterday and saw quite the opposite of what you are saying. The crowds were intense, everyone was dancing and the sets were amazing. The reason you may feel this way is because there is some major world wide talent based out of London and they spin there all the time. So some of their line ups may seem like no big deal to locals there, but the crowd was still down with cause. |

the dnb crowds in london are full of energy different scenes...
but I live in europe...and have a lot of friends in many countries who are into the elec tronic music scene..and really..outside of london(and even in london according to some older folks) dnb is not rally "cool" anymore.
In berlin for example the dnb parties are where all the kids in there early 20s go...similiar thing in BCN as well..and in edinburh..and dublin(to a lesser degree)
dnb is four younger kids in all these cities...
abywa..back to the topic at hand...
la DOES NOT havr london "beat" not by a long shot.. it is jsut different |

Re: LA DnB Is More Exciting than London DnB
LOL @ not being able to compare things because they are different. I should compare things that are the same ("The LA scene is more exciting than the LA scene . . .")?
My point was only that I belive LA has more energy than London now. I've been visiting both cities for well over a decade, and I believe LA crowds are out in front of London in terms of excitment. It's been a slow change, but this last trip confirmed it.
I guess another way to say it is: I would rather party to DnB in LA than London now. The crowds are more up for it (and flail waaaaay less hard), the DJ's seem more up for it (and certainly, aren't just "going through the paces"), and the MC's are infinitely more practiced and respectful of the music.
I'm not saying LA is "better," because London still has many awesome elements LA can't touch (like crowd size, soundsystems, DJ selection; etc.), but it is currently the more exciting, vibrant place to catch DnB.

it almost sounded like you were gonna make the colonel's point. Ill take that and further elaborate that because they are spoiled they dont see it as being cool. Now lets inject some talent into the UK underground that isnt from London more often, coughLAcough, and it should spice things up a bit HOLLER.

yah, i agree with some posters, you cannot compare LA to the UK and say one is better than the other in terms of music, vibe, energy, or whatever. Like someone has stated, it is like apples to oranges.
I mean, big up to you goin to Fabric, which is my die hard place i would love to go to, but maybe during the time you went, the timing was off?
Picture it as a UK person going to How Sweet it is here in LA and then generalizing all the dnb parties out in LA.
Besides, NOTHING beats the originator of the Big 'Choonz. |

Re: LA DnB Is More Exciting than London DnB
Yeah, DnBsteez, I would agree with you if I had been to London once, or to one club in LA; etc. But I've been to many clubs and one-offs in both cities many times over the past 10 years, and I believe there's been a change . . .
I think the older generation in London has fallen off, as somebody mentioned, and the younger kids don't seem to know why they're there. Definite drop in vibe--at Fabric, at Movement, at Swerve, at one-offs, at every DnB event I've been to in London over the past 2-3 years.
Los Angeles, on the other hand, seems to be going the other way, with nights getting better and better, and the excitement continuing to jack up.
But this is just my take, and as I said, my only intent was to big up LADnB! |

Re: LA DnB Is More Exciting than London DnB
I wouldn´t say that london electronic music heads have dropped off..they have just moved on...
I hate to say this...but dnb has bot been progressing at the rate that it used to progress at...and just like the uk most of the head into dnb are i the 18(or younger) to 22 range
look at respect..for example
I mean... a lot of older heads don´t listen to dnb because it ha gotten somewhat stale...and this is not only true in London.
I WAS involved in the la scene over a decade ago and the large majority of la heads I knew(who used to dj and promote and stuff) have moved on....
and a lot of UK djs(other than the big names) have a problem making a living like they use to...
in this way la actually might have London beat(soon) there seems to be a market for dnb here that is growing..the inverse seems to be true in Europe..and london
yeh

Re: LA DnB Is More Exciting than London DnB
I cant speak for the London scene. But, what gets me excited about the LA scene is the new locations that parties are held at. It can be so fun driving to a part of LA that I have never been before. Making blind turns because mapquest says so, and to find the loacation of the hidden party. Wondering the whole time what the scene is going to be like inside. Then getting inside of some warehouse/loft and to find the place going nuts. Your fav local DJ shredding the place, on a stacked sytem. That kinda stuff gets me excited.
Checking JS for a new weekly to pop up. Then finding a new one with a s**t ton of DJs that I want to check out, and to find out the location is sick, and the system being used is top notch. Not to mention when Bassrush brings in some fresh talent.
I'm still thankfull I live in LA where a scene of electronic music is vibrant, perhaps the UK peoples are taking their scene for granted, and don't get as excited as we do when the stars align and a smoker of a party happens. |

Re: LA DnB Is More Exciting than London DnB
JonL: for me, a party is defined more by the crowd than the line-up. LA crowds currently have five times the energy with five times less the aggro, flailing vibes. More women, more dancers, less wastoids.
Can't fade the line-ups in London, for sure, nor the size of the venues. But after a decadeof travelling to and from London to party to DnB, I think I'm over it. The scene there isn't what it used to be, and it just isn't as much fun as coming to LA . . .
And those who say they can't be compared, you have a lack of imagination!

Re: LA DnB Is More Exciting than London DnB
Ive never been to london so i cant say which city has more energy, but i think theres a reason LA might feel more "exciting" to anyone who comes and parties here. I think the LA scene has been around long enough and is sized just perfect so that anyone knows pretty much everyone, so everytime you go out you see a lot of familiar faces. I personally see a lot of my junglist family (yes cuz consider a lot of you like my family) at every event i go to, Funktion, RESPECT, Upgrade, Native, i love LA, Timeless to name a few. I think the reason LA feels more electric is precisely that, the fact that no matter where you go you see these familiar faces. When i compare it to the UK scene theres just so many parties and so many things going on i an imagine its hard to achieve that same level of comfort and closeness. I know id personally vibe way more of the people i know and love/care for/respect, LA is amazing city to live in and i think we are truly blessed to have such a sick junglist community, theres some truly amazing people in this city....
