CDJ advice
Hello all. So, i mix with vinyl only right now and I really would like to try mixing with cd players. I know I'll get some s**t for that, and... don't get me wrong. I love vinyl but, i'm very much into techy drum & bass, and i've been hearing a lot of sick mixes where the djs use cdjs for loops and s**t, and I just really want to give it a go.
I was wondering if anyone had any input on the comparison between the CDJ-800 MK2s and the CDJ-1000 MK3s. If it's even worth trying to shell out the extra $500-600 just to get 1000s and if CDJ-800 MK2s still provide most of the essential features of the CDJ-1000 MK3s.
And also, if anyone knows where one might be able to find some good used decks for a good deal.
Thanks

Re: CDJ advice
The CDJ 1000's are insanely expensive, there is no doubt about that.
The main reason I like them is the fact that at the top of the CD Player's display, you will find a graph that tells you where the breakdowns & buildups in the currently playing track are. Is that worth $1000+, your call.
also check out the CDJ 400, an interesting option.

Re: CDJ advice
With all the digital-only releases out nowadays it seems like moving away from vinyl is inevitable. I love my turntables but I have a metric s**t ton of awesome music locked away on my hard drive with no way to rinse it...
I knew a guy who moved from vinyl to CDs, and he moved to the Technics CDJ-equivs since they seem to do a better job of emulating vinyl feel... in any case after looking at them I think they're worth a view.

Re: CDJ advice
the wav display on the 1000's is a nice feature. the other one i like is when u hit the stop button it will wind down like vinyl. other than those two features there is not much else. not worth it in my opinion. i will eventually upgrade only when they become a bit more affordable. |

Re: CDJ advice
I'm not by any means a CD-J expert since I mostly use Serato, but I know that the MK2's don't play MP3's which makes the MK3's much more versital in terms of what kinds of files you can play (although WAV files are better quality, they also cost more on Beatport, etc...)
I'd say go with the Pioneer CD-J 1000MK3's...they appear to be industry standard from what I've noticed.
*edit: I can't spell worth sheeeeeeeit, lol

My buddy is selling his 2 technics turntables, 2 chrome face plates, and needles for $500. He also has a couple of stage monitors he is selling for an additional $200. Let me make sure that they are still available.
If you would be interested in coming down to San Diego to pick them up, you can also swing by United Records and do a personal comparison of these 2 CD-J's that we carry for rentals and for use in our studio. Once you decide which one's you'ld like, we can order them for you for pretty cheap. Just let us know what the lowest price you can find is and we can usually beat the price Hope we can help.
Here are the 2 types that we carry:

DJ CD Player
Pioneer CDJ-1000MK3 DJ CD Player
The MK3 version adds support for mp3s
or
DJ CD Player
Pioneer CDJ-1000MK2 DJ CD Player
The industry standard
My bad...I think I got confused with the 800... |

Re: CDJ advice
Yo Daemia. Thanks for the help. Do you work at United Records? I've never been there, but your website looks like you have a sick selection. I'm gonna have to check it out.
I actually meant CD decks. But thanks anyways.
And the best price I've found for CDJ-1000MK3s are $1150 on ebay including shipping. Do you know if United would be able to beat that? |

I'll be in tomorrow so I can see if I can beat that, but the price that we can beat is based on brand new equipment prices, not used. $1150 doesn't sound like a bad deal though. I'd try to talk him down to $1000...you never know.
Definitely come by the store some time! It's not hard to make a great weekend out of SD....
We'll be in touch. |

Re: CDJ advice
the 1000's also have the 3 "hot cue" cue points where the 800s only have a cheesy quick loop function. |

Re: CDJ advice
@obstrukt
Yeah, that little display is interesting, as most people have been looking at it for years without knowing what it does (or even thinking that it does much of anything).
However, Serato's visual feedback smokes anything outside of a professional audio program, so it's pretty much wins in the "showing you WTF is going on" department.

Re: CDJ advice
i wish pioneers would start implementing a USB port to play from on all of their CDJs. it would save a ton of CDs and sharpie ink, not to mention the time burning the toons, or the hastle of changing a CD every toon (eject/put away/find new toon/insert/que). they do have this feature on the Pioneer CDJ-400, however i would like to see this become a standard for all of their CDJs. what do u guys think? |
