question for mc's...
i know i'm bringing up an old topic everyone's tired of, but who cares. so mc's... i'm sure u read all those posts about how u guys need to learn how to shut up sometimes and stop calling for rewinds every other song. and i'm sure u hear this all the time. so why do u keep doing it? i'm not sayin ALL mc's... but most of u. i guess u are hyping up the crowd, which is good... but it also seems like the only ppl getting hyped up are the fuct up ravers who don't know anything about jungle anyway. so i see it as selling out. i think u should do wat ppl who actually know the music want, and let us listen to it. and don't call for a rewind on, like, "lk". |

Re: question for mc's...
The way i see it...the mcs are doing it for the massive at that party..not the few select people that actually take the time to learn about dnb like ourselves... i mean yeah...at bassrush twist um out got rewound 4 times.. BUT..the first rewind was worth it..did you see the crowd. its all on the audience as a whole...not us select few that sit in the back corner watching what the dj does and what tunes he drops and how he drops them. |

Bluntly if u don't like it don't pay to come, it continues when u throw ur support behind it (ie. Paying). I agree with you 168% If it was up to me the only MC's that would have the privilege of touching the mic would have to be on some Saul Williams Coded Language s**t.
Not some attention whore cheerleader s**t.. Sorry if that was harsh, I am tired of having to hear some of my favorite Djs over some whiney ass blabba mouf who tries to out shine the DJ ... the whole resident MC thing is a Joke to me. If a Dj has an MC whom they have somes**t rehearsed with, fine, but having some one get up and be cheerleader for the crowd while some sick outta town Dj is not getting their vibe across cause the MC rather turn it into some booty dance s**t.

The thing that bothers me the most is why MC's think they can just show up and grace us with there "skills" or lack there of. Just because you ARE an MC doesnt mean you are supposed to be doing your thang at every party. I dance way more when the vibe becomes more mental and deep. Kinda animalistic or tribal.. To each his own I understand that people can look at it different ways.
I personally believe that jungle was put here to deliver a message and when we decide to go towards that jump up booty direction, that the intended message gets dilluted ...

Pete not Shabba! More like Det, 5-0, Moose, Hyper D (rip), Justiyc! Yes rewinds have been around since the dawn of jungle, BUT (Pete and u must understand thi cause i see u argue with people all the tyme and u always state what the UK is doing), THE USA is different. Yes this comes from the UK, but we should be setting our own trends and ways of doing things. Rap started in the East, but the West Coast has their own flavor!!! U can not make arguements against stateside people by using UK parties s ur "evidence" unless ur arguing "facts". The whole US phenomenon of dnb is very different then the UK. We may immulate them in some ways we also do things a lot different here (which is a GREAT thing in my opinion) |

God I cant agree more. Its like that with alot of MC's tho. If the promoters wanted them to preform, then they would have gotten booked for the party. i totally hear what DCM is saying and have wondered the same thing.
i like it when an mc knows when to stay quite... i mean.. i think of the mc as an instrument.. and any one instrument overpowering the rest is no fun..
http://junglescene.com/forums/browse.php?fid=74&tid=590&start=0&mode=flat
and it's hard to say "don't support the shows" with mcees..cuz most of the time u don't even know one will be there..
I may not have a jungle degree but i know what sounds good..and theirs a whole lot of times where i want to yell "please let me hear the track!"
i think some mcees need to remember that 99% of the time the fans are there for the DJ.... not to hear "lighta crew.. where's my lighta crew" |

Re: question for xyz
Sorri Tammy. Y Do I (cause i can only speak for me) always call for rewinds?
*Well i like to think that i don't, but that is a matter of opinion. Okay the last couple of shows i did (RAS in SD on Weds. there was 1 rewind, i didn't call for it, Ras pulled it). Me at Rewind with APX, there was not one rewind, me at Respect with No Face, no rewind, me with Craze in SD, 1 rewind called when the crowd went bananas for "Rough Neck Sound" (i think thatz the tune).
*Y don't I know when to shut-up? Well i think that i know when to (again personal opinion). Most of my flows are 16 lines which i feel is best for me to get in and get out (in terms of flow). Also i DJ (have been for 8-9 yrs. so i can pick up on DJs tendencies and how they operate. For the most part when th crossfader is being moved over i am quite, if anything is said it is a word or 2 not a flow. Oh course particular DJs are different. Example PHEAR mixxes really well for long perods of tyme so i let him run (b/c he freaks out eqs etc.), but i also know if i say something while he is in the mix he can handle it b/c he is a top DJ and keeps his mixxes clean. Someone like RAW really desnt' ever need a MC, but if i happen to MC for him i don't say anything really, he mixxes so quick and vocals are all over the plce. Also i know many of the tunez or many tunez play'd (musically wise) can be anticipated on what is coming up next. The structure of tunez (many 2-step ones, 2-step jungle) are formulaic so it is no secret what is coming up (and this is not a bad thing just a point made). Another big key is that I tend to ease off when my mic is plugg'd into the mixer, meaning: my voice is coming thru the DJs monitor! That is key because he/she will not be able to hear at all. Also since i own my own mic and am a DJ and have experience with sound i know exactly how to make it so my voice soundz good (EQ wise). Many of the DJs that i perform with locally, i have experience performing with them so they know what to expect from me and vica versa. So i know APX's style and how i should mc to him vs say No Face's.
Now all of this being said, along with how much i write and practice etc., i still am probably the worst mc or sorry to many people (sum are my friendz who tell me), but it doesn't phase me for the mere fact that some people do like my style and i feel as though i put in enough work (and not simply plug my mic in and yap)

Re: question for xyz
yeah, XYZ is definitely an intelligent MC (and person), and I love the way he explains things about how he operates... that is dope... and I respect him a lot and like his style.
DCM does have a point though, most mc's don't let the records play alone for long enough, say stupid s**t and unnecessarily yap, and call for way too many rewinds... and it sucks, because when i want to hear one of my favorite dj's and the exprerience is ruined by an mc who won't stay quiet, it SUCKS.
But it happens time and time again, and that is why this discussion will never stop... |

About 75% of the time I don't. DJs (especially ones from the UK or out of town big names) often pull back records themselves and sometimes without even looking up to see/hear whether or not the crowd was even into at all. This baffles me on one level. But when it's someone like STORM who does look up and rewinds when she feels like it and when she knows the crowd is feeling it, then i don't even have to. Last night with Fabio I was happy to call a rewind on "Closer" because the crowd was having it and so was he. That seems appropriate to me.
and a side note to that Storm story, i actually almost got in a fist fight because some foolio said it was "my job" to call rewinds ...on all the tracks his drunk-ass wanted rewound. *shrug* can't please everyone!
*Why don't I know when to shut-up?*
I know this doesn't apply to me much at all, cause I have a pretty minimalistic style.
so to answer with a hypothesis:
*Why don't most MC's know when to shut-up?*
several possible reasons:
a. they are drunk
b. they are drunk and stoned
c. they are drunk and stoned and THINK they sound great!
d. the only reason they ever picked up the mic was to feed their ego and not to feed the vibe
e. they are actually feeling it so much they have lost all track of space and time (this happens)
f. they just don't care
hope this helps. peace. - rashida

Re: question for mc's
He is actually one of my favs.. Not so much for what he says but for the way he flows in and out without making a big ripple. I dont hear him trying to upstage Djs or Asking for excessive rewinds either ...
In my opinion he is pretty humble and represents having a good time whether you remember his name or not....
Once again just my opinion |

Re: question for mc's
According to Audio Angel: this was great by the way!

I think quite possibly a combo of all of these in many cases...
Everytime this discussion comes around the only two that respond are XYZ and Audioangel, and I don't think either of them really pertain to the issues of 1. not shutting the hell up once and a while, and 2. calling for too many rewinds...
So big ups to them for doing it proper. |

Re: question for mcs
on the topic of rewinds... i'm sure most of ya'll know this, but about 98.9% of jungle culture is straight lifted from the jamaican yards... the dublate bizness, most of the slang, the lighters, the boh boh boh's, the MCs, a lot in the styles of dress/dance, and the rewinds, etc, etc, etc. the difference is that in jamaican yards, if a dj were to reload a record without an overwhelming and undeniably strong request for it coming from THE CROWD, that dj just might not live to see another day. all that said, i LOVE a PROPER rewind.
on the MC topic... last night, a local jungle mc (one that's on the top of his game in my book, but who shall remain nameless) and i were talking about bassrush and he said something that got me... he said "i'd like to see any of those uk mcs at project blowed"... yes, i think that would be some comedy.
much respect to REAL rewinds and REAL MCs!
