Compound Records San Francisco is going out of business
Compound Records San Francisco will be closing its doors for business on Friday Jan 24. Unfortunately, the economy and scene are not conducive to us continuing to operate at this time. We’d like to thank everyone for their support during the last four years and ask that you keep watching us for bigger and better projects coming soon. From now until Jan 24 everything in our inventory will be 60% off (12”s, EPs, LPs, CDs). This means all 12" singles are $3.99!! We also just finished taking inventory so our online stock is now completely accurate. Questions and comments may be directed to info@compoundrecords.com.
Thanks once again,
Compound Records |

I had heard something about this happening not too long ago. I guess it is confirmed now. You guys had a good run and carried a great reputation in selling vinyl. Sorry to see you go, and I wish you the best of luck in future endeavors.

Re: Compound Records San Francisco is going out of business
total sign of the times...
I went record shopping at Gramaphone in Chicago last October. The drum n bass section used to be huge, and now its a bin or two. I asked the person that stocks drum n bass why that is - he answered "no one is buying it anymore"
Tracks that had been on my wants list for years, I found at Compound. Respect to Compound for supporting drum n bass. |

Re: Compound Records San Francisco is going out of business
dude... why dont you just transform into an online only record store. Thats where most of my purchasing money goes anyway.
Just make sure your website has a good user interface.. (ie equal to or better than groovetech) and compound can still survive. You can differentiate yourself from the rest of the online record stores from your orders. You already have the name recognition going for you.

man. this is kinda sad. i'm definately gonna miss the times i've spent there. and the many different staffers over the years.
in response to raun darling: i think the sf d-n-b scene has been chugging it's way back underground for the past year. so that wouldn't surprise me in the least. there is definately still a deep love here for it, but it's way different than LA in that we reached a kind of climax in 2001/mid 02... and now with the economy the way it is, we're just figuring out what to do next. |

s**t
nemesis is the best distro in the states .. this will make it a bitch for lots of dj's to get access to new things. nemesis westcoast also meant that shops could get promos and good stock a day or two after the uk distro picked things up. plus having westcoast distro means that shop owners can save bank on records because shipping is a lot cheaper.
bad news for everybody who buys records.

Re: Compound Records San Francisco is going out of business
Honestly, I am not a business analyst and couldn't really tell you what the problem was for Compound Records. I might even be able to if I saw their accounting records but that's really beside the point. I wasn't speaking specifically about Compound Records, but more about the scene in general. The vinyl business does not seem to be suffering from the economy or a regression in popularity of the music.
DJing is TRENDY now, people. Everyone I meet these days is getting a set of decks and some wax and hittin it up. I know of quite a few people who have gone from hardly ever buying records to spending at least $100 a month on vinyl. Another thing, if there ever was a time that dnb went mainstream it was 2002. Ming and FS doing a Nissan AD? Shy FX and T Power making videos that get on MTV for songs that make the Top Ten Billboard lists all over the world (including US!!!). Shit, I know it's sacreligious to mention, but what about Justin Timberlake's new CD and some of the s**t Neptune produced this year.
USERIZE, PEOPLE!!!
The US economy might be getting sorry-ass and the world might be crumbling around us, but DRUM AND BASS IS NOT DYING!!!! Let's PLEASE have a little more optimisim...
The whining and moping is startin' to KILL me!!!

Re: Compound Records San Francisco is going out of business
the cost of vinyl may go up, due to the fact that shops will have to eat it on shipping costs. distro price will still remain the same, but the overhead on shipping is what kills it.
dj'ing is trendy, but the market cannot sustain itself. there arent enough regular people out there who will drop $200 a month on plates. the economy sucks, kids dont have a couple of extra bucks to spend on tunes, and therefore industry is suffering. |

Re: Compound Records San Francisco is going out of business
Compound Records- good luck in hard times, I'm very sorry to see this happen.
I don't mean to trivialize this at all, but I don't think you guys realize the overall impact our music burning/sharing has had on the entire music community.
I work for one of the last-standing major music distibutors in the U.S
(Phantom Sound & Vision)
we don't just sell dnb, we caiter to the entire industry with emphasis on independent and imported tunes.
This industry has been dying-progressively. All day long I am reminded of that grim fact as I reach record shops that are now out of business.
I would never give up the opportunities of accessability presented by file-sharing, but just remember the impact you can have on the music industry, if you shell-out a few bucks to purchase your favorite artists album, instead of burning it.
As for the music dying-NEVER
it's just getting a lot harder to make an honest living by making/selling music. |

This is much bigger than just Cali.
This is a world-wide trend (trust me I know)
Internationally people all over are contimplating the dim future of record retail.
Stores are going under daily, people going back to office jobs or just drinking in a dirty gutter with a sign that says "will teach the history of music, for food"

Why would they, you may ask.
Does anybody remember when there was no internet and all we had was word of mouth, do you remember the feelings of being united with all those who frequent your local shop, it was simple, it was family-like-love. Record shops to us, were like the gym to a boxer, or for some like the crib to a baby.

I don't see how a record store could afford PR...when the store really needs to be run with a very limited staff on a shoestring budget...
I mean really...an online record store = Inventory,Owner, Techy and perhaps a shipper/administrator...
record labels and DJs however will always need PR so don't worry....
the scene restructuring is good for you....for every dollar that Dieselboy saves on records he can give some to you to make sure we all know that he is the best us drum n bass dj

I drive a car, and yes I buy records off of the internet, but for every record I buy from the internet I probably listen through 100 records and buy 3 or 4(at record shops)
A waste of time listening to 100 random records?- I wouldn't trade it for the world.
You misunderstand me, I'm not telling you to abandon on-line anything, just remember and hopefully practice the ways of the old (without the knowledge of the past the future is corrupted)
