How did JUNGLE become Affiliated with WAR?

I always wonderd that? If jungle came from hard core techno which came from the rave scene, then where and when did jungle get a war affilation to it?

Heres what i'm talking about..

The fact that we wear Camo and military clothes

The term "Junglist Soldiers"

D&B mixed tapes & cd's with war imagry...

Military netting at some parties...

I'm not saying its a bad thing i'm Just curious....

i think that its how jungle sounded back in the day drums rolling like machine guns and the bass droping like bombs...

Cuz cats in the early days were all 'us vs them' in terms of how they responded to other folks in other scenes.

when your music isn't getting respect, you're not gong to just step back...you're going to be a soldier and fight for your cause..

I think it has to do with the early Jamaican/East Indies influence in producing/mc-ing in jungle. (the second and third generation East Indies transplants in and around London, which are responsible for the connection between ragga and techno)

To them music is political, it is about war, politics, life, and struggle, and they talk about a social war~ which brings in all the war imagery and allusions which we take on when we wear camo, and do the junglist soldier thing...

Dimas, i thought this was a great question too.


with tunes titled "warhead" and "turbulence" i don't find it surprising....

i bet a lot of it is through word association, and the sounds recreated via musical instruments, tools and software.

I've never liked the association with war and DnB - i've seen lots of people turned off by it - and not look ast it to see the music behind it

That and Jungle is tied to Reggae, which has always had a militant aspect.

I believe it comes from the militant aspect of reggae. its very rebellious and political. i truly believe it comes from its reggae roots. so it is not really ridiculous especially when the jamaicans and ethiopians have been s**tted on by imperialist armies (italy, england)

Is this true? Do non junglists really get turned off with D&B and WAR analogies?

I am personally seeing a change in the overall image of D&B/Jungle with the onslaught of D&B's new generation of followers, artists, and DJ'S... I think it's moving away from WAR and darkness as the common analogy.

People are still wearing the cammo but now I see the more common messages conveyd are TECHNOLOGY, LOVE, and PARTYING......... And its truely found in the music because D&B incorperates other music genres like DISCO, JAZZ, and HOUSE more often then before...

The cool thing now is that our genre has gone full circle so OLD generations and NEW generations all come togther now and create a variety of vibes from the early Junglist protest movement to the new LOVE STEP movement, we can appreciate and enjoy eveything...

i think tha the word war comes into play because if u step back for a second and watch the dance floor go crazy when the dj is putting it down it looks like an army platoon is going to was...for real

could it partially be from when the majority of dnb played in england in the beginning was on pirate radio stations so all the djs mcs and producers had to sneak around and plan escapes and setup and breakdown s**t on the fly?
