Re: WMC In Short!
Dimas to answer ur question in my opinion, the impact dnb had on this conference (as in all the others) would be to expose more people to it and that's it. There is nothing "ground breaking" that u discover in any of the musics, but every year the conference grows and gets noteriety in the local and national newspapers, ULTRA is the biggest party in North America, Miami is literally turned into the WMC playground that is the impact of all the musics. Honestly this year it was the year of the American based MCs (IMO and not cause i am a MC). Some of the UK talent didn't show (ie. GQ and Fearless), but Armani and J-Messinian stepped up and got the accredidation and approval of the UK DJs and MCs. That is a major step for US MCs. I chatted with Rhymetyme for many days about MCn' and the differences i saw in UK v USA and how it is in LA and our scene and just talked to him about everything related to MCn in the US and he was really receptive. Enough so that to close out the RAM v VIRUS party he said "U rock with FRESH to end it man". The focus of dnb will always be the Music, but to see Armani, Sharpness, Myself and Rhymetyme have a crowd of 50 people around us as we freestyled to 'beatbox'd' jungle outside of WORLD OF DNB (when it was over) was awesome, u swear there was still a party going on (we would do call and response and they were on it). Also now agents are trying to get at stateside mcs by themselves and not necessarily as a DJ/MC tandem is a step of progression, IMO. I always liked J-Messinian, but to see him rock out with for instance SS instead of Dieselboy was a great thing. To talk to agents regarding representing MCs in the states as their own entity is refreshing. It is good because it also makes a standard of quality that agents expect thus pushing the artform and making everyone work that much harder! That is the impact within dnb i saw, but on a overall DnB was huge this year and just attracted more heads, simply put. I will say that WMC makes u see that LA is but a piece of the nationwide and worldwide DnB pie. My world of drum n bass literally shrank after meeting so many people and contacts in Miami. Like Philly for instance is not that far to me (mentally) so for myself it is important that i stay busy and in contact with the MCs out there or in NY or in Miami. The USA can not be London (a country and a city), but we are only maximum 6 hours away from each other by plane. U think outside of the box after going to WMC.
Stateside MCs on the scene in Miami:
*Armani: Solidified himself as #1 in my book. Played with Goldie, SS, Dieselboy, Dara, AK1200 and everyone else. Very chill fellow.
*J-Messinian: Showed that he can rock it with or without Dieselboy. He personally got the nod to rock over Goldie's set at Metalheadz. He is a sick MC and chill guy!
*Mis-ty: Rock'd over Loxy, Ink, Twisted Individual and others. Comes from Philly and has the confidence of a lion on stage. April 19th she'll be in SD.
*Sharpness: From Philly also. Performed about everywhere Armani did. Hip Hop style, but very energetic and funny.
*Illy MC: Performed with Loxy, Ink & Gigantor. Very good flow, i thought it was MC 2Shy at first, he's from Baltimore.
*TC Izlam: Performed with everyone, very energetic, very dope. Sick skills.
*Kenny D: A local from Miami, but tight. Very fast on the chat!
*Dread MC: Local Miami, sounds exactly like DET . . . .
*don't get me wrong it was all about the tunez played, but seriously the energy was electric when say like Messianian would take over etc.. |

Re: WMC In Short!
werd XYZ....
well the reason I was asking was becuase I had heard that last year MARKY, REID SPEED, and HIGH CONTRATS were big highlights of the entire WMC event...
and I was wondering if any D&B really stood out in the entire scene as opposed to only within itself...
I feel that your answer is regarding D&B within itself and not on the entire electronic music scale.... if you know what I mean???

Re: WMC In Short!
Well last year was the year of "Liquid" and the re-emergence of "soul" in DnB that High Contrast brought to the table (year before the Brazilian Sound). Of course after that explosion there were many many imitators (ie. Housey DnB tracks called Liquid) (i saved the article interview with High Contrast in the Miami Paper it is an interesting read). This year there was no "standout" sound. I think this is the year of the REMIXES! Now a tune comes out and if it is hot then u can expect at least 4-10 remixes! We even now have LPs of all remixes of the same tune. Everyone had a remix of something in Miami. My favorite was Shy FX's remix of Original Nuttah (yet another one, but this one was very good and double dropped with another tune @ Ultra).

Re: WMC In Short!
wmc 2003 in a word...WEAK!
haha kidding, i knew i'd get some attention. this past week has to be THE single most inspiring week of my adult life. see im a dnb head to the fullest and a hiphop head at heart who has been to 5 Rock Steady Anniv., 4 B-Boy Summits, Gavin, New Music Seminar, 2 Scribble Jams, Audiotistic 02, and countless ITF's, DMC's and concerts for days and i must say the raw energy felt at WMC was unmatched. it was a pure vaction for my girl and i, along with one hell of a learning experience to boot. being a dnb mc myself, it was dope to take note at what the "big guns" of our culture were handeling the mic. i must say that the state side mc's impressed me far greater than the UK ones. armani kills! mcmc, rhymetime, 5-0 although cool heads just dont do it for me. im into crowd control as well as technical prowess and the uk cats lacked in the 2nd department. it was great to be able to take home the vibes as well as the mic lessons learned back to hawaii.
highlights for the wmc include:
-goldie @ metalheads
-kenny ken @ next door to metalheds (i forget the venue)
-armani rippin all week
-skiba b2b w/ tali @WODNB
-andy c b2b w/bad co
-dynamite @ ultra
-THE WHOLE DAMN VIBE AT WODNB
-my girl and i peepin spanish girl booty all trip.
-watching much fools get shut down by my girl all week.
-hearing punjabi mc w/jay z on miami radio all week (i like that song)
-navi and spyda doing mo fire live @ WODNB
-seeing mapi swift, ss, andy c, fresh, ink, loxy, baily, goldie, influx, kenny ken, krust, die, reid speed, shy fx, I CANT FRIGGIN BEIEVE I SAW ALL THESE CATS!!
im from hawaii and s**t like this is a dream come true, trust.
easy,

Bwahahaha! That s**t was pure comedy.
Some highlights for me:
Number one on my list ... Being on the beach watching the fiery red sun RISE out of the Atlantic Ocean and having my beautiful girlfriend there in my arms to share it with me.
The Metalheadz Party (ezily the best night)
Something Sick (DCSI4)
Hangover (Chill day thang)
World of DnB
Ram Vs. Virus
Substitution/BeatCamp thang
Part of Ultra
Getting in free to just about every event. :P
Marky's surprise set at Metalheadz
Moshing and pogo'ing with Goldie
Realizing my love for sexy drum n bass. Thank you Fabio!
Shy FX with Skibba
GROOVERIDER's intro track OHMYGOD
Hearing that one track with the double drop getting caned everywhere. God what is the name of that tune. Vlad? (I don't think its 'Bubble')
Smuggling a twelve pack of Corona and a fifth of Vodka into each party we went to.
Running into Damian and James
Hanging out with Bad Company reminiscing about our skydiving adventure.
Meeting John B (Anti to Forrest for tricking me into asking John, for you, if he was selling E ... you got me good dickhead ... goodtimes)
Seeing lots of people I know from DC, New York, Philly, Atlanta and of course LA and San Diego.
All of the new peeps I met. Natalie and her friends, alot of the agents I deal with, all the soldiers, all the locals, etc.
Seeing Hazen in true form every night. "Flowbie" is a nut.
Being backstage for World of DnB. Meeting Skiba, Ckickaboo, Twisted Individual, Fresh, Mampi, SS, Navigator, Empress, Adam F
Trainspotting on some heavy sets at World and getting great flicks
Watching Dylan, Rene from BSE, Quiff, Paul, Trace, Vegas and Maldini and many others act like total lunatics getting sloshed and raving with us all on the dancefloor.
Taking the bus to Ultra and having a kid give me his extra ($70) ticket.
Seeing Rabbit in the Moon
Fixing the PA at the Hangover party as it was about to die a violent death.
and
The reward I got from AK1200 for doing so (gotta love the Jamaican sinse). I guess being from Florida has it's advantages ... LORD A MERCY!
Watching stateside MC's blow the f**k up and witnessing XYZ move to the "Next Level"
Seeing Rashida close the World party. She was so f**king amazing and she got the crowd going more nuts than anyone else could when she talked about freedom. I enjoyed her performance so damn much. Bigup your chest sista, you rock!
Seeing Rhymtyme chase after "that hoochie in the pink booty shorts"
Beautiful people, beautiful homes, beautiful cars, beautiful clothes, beautiful everything.
Standing at the stairs where Gianni Versace was gunned down in front of his palatial estate on Ocean Blvd. So sad, so tragic , so wrong. R.I.P
Walks alone down the beautiful Lincoln Road Galleria at twilight.
Seeing photographers shooting famous models everywhere you went and how woven into the local culture it is.
Seeing the best visual art I have seen in a loong time. Do you guys remember that shocking black and white of the man in the wig and a womans mask with a gun to his/her head. Whew that one was good.
Cuban coffee
Internet cafes
Window shopping.
Bomb Sushi
Taking in Miami high fashion.
The Suburban.
Cheap (well-regulated) taxi-cabs
Cool cops who don't f**k with you for having fun.
Witnessing a gnarly accident on the 95 South. I will never forget that.
Getting tore up off of Alize for the first time.
"I know I did something ... Lord what can it be? Woke up in the morning now all my friends hate me." - Sublime
Seeing and partying with most of the people who straight up created this music we love so much was such an honor.
The amount of inspiration and renewed vision I received while in Miami was absolutely priceless.
Being away from SoCal raving and partying with The Wanksta Kru without any responsibilites or worries was just what the doctor ordered. I never get to dance like that here anymore.
There are tons more highlights. Maybe I will post them as I recall them ... maybe I won't.
