why dont djs that have been playing out for ages get booked

jason angel, dj w, tom b and kojak, i can go on and on...


are all the promoters just booking their friends or whats the deal?

It doesn't matter how long you have been playing......

What matters is how hard you promote yourself everyday cause each day is a different battle.....

people are fickle, they will forget a good dj in a second, it's up to the DJ to remain fresh in ones mind!!!

Same goes for all levels of dj's if dieselboy stopped putting out cd's touring and promoting himself i'm shure people would forget..

interesting points.

It's true that some deejays do not get booked becuase they are not in the "public eye." Becuase I know that if I have a mix handed to me the night of MUSE, you better belive that I will listen to that mix the next day. For instance, I booked Tabu the day after hearing his mix for MUSE. So yes, promoting yourself is a plus.

Also, when brainstorming for people to play, I think of past guest and older deejays. Some of them just don't have the pull or draw that a promoter is looking for unfortunetly. With kids coming and gonig so much these days, its hard to make a name stick in thier heads.

Though the comment about people only booking friends, is not right. I for one, do not book firends for the simple fact they are friends. I am not in the business of keeping my friends careers going if they can't keep a beat. I'm here to get deejays together who will make my party goers move thier asses.

I think that is a MAJOR problem in any music scene. It's unfair to the people with real talent who could actually rock the crowd and provide good music for the paying customers, to lose thier spot to a "homie" who can't beatmatch to save his life.

You gotta mix, I'd like to hear it.

last i heard jason angel wasn't really spinning too much lately, he was getting into more frat-related activities spending more time with his frat brothers....

Haven't heard from or of him in ages....

That could be a pretty good damn reason he isn't playing, I don't think he's trying....

You want to get booked, you got to work for it, or else you will slowly fade away... So its on each dj to put forth their own effort as well.

You can't blame promoters for not booking a dj that isn't working for it.

what do you do, how do you do it and what do you bring to the tables that no one else does?

after six months, anyone can beatmatch... you gotta then find means to seperate yourself from the bunch.

It's the oldest catch 22 in the scene. As a new promoter you very badly want to push the new/underground names that are very talented yet still rather unknown. However, as a seasoned promoter you begin to realize that in order to survive you have to book talent that will draw. Good promoters can find the balance between the two.

good points here, and i just threw out those names as examples...just wanted to see what kind of viewpoints promoters as well as dj's have....what about booking producers who suck as dj's but have good prodo skills or suck as producers but have a name?

I would never book someone, producer, headpuller, homie, or seasoned vet, that couldn't beat match. It's more about the vibe and people have a good time, then making money.

I also feal that some DJs are jsut content with playing now and then... having thare small influance on the scne / not on some mad trip to come up but jsut like doing thare thing....

I think most DJs are jsut big fans of the music so going to partys or playing partys are bothe injoyable....

so peraps some of the older djs are jsut taking a brake or intrested in other things at the moment...

thare was somting befor DnB and thare will be somting affter I promis you...

I've been waiting for this topic.......I've always wondered why that is.....Many of these crews, clubs, and DJ's would not even be around if it werent for those who brought the sound to them first and now those who got the ball rollin cant even get booked....

San Diego has it's classic examples of this. POW's MIA's lost but not forgotten "I Remember"

it sounds like you're trying to place the blame on anyone but the deejay in question.

If you want it then you have to go and get it. A lot of heads just dont do that. It's not the promoters fault.

you dont have to go to every event.
and there is the mail, in which you can send out mixes through. Pick and choose your events wisely. The ones you like to play at are the ones that your face should be seen at.

no doubt you got to promote yourself........there is no magical being thats gonna just hand you status.......but there is a fine line between who you hang out with and the talent you have.....

I tend to think who you know benefits you more in order to get booked then TALENT does.....

Well the question every DJ should ask themselves is what do I add to the bottom line. Meaning... do you draw? Will people pay money to see you. Will your name on the flier attract people to an event. Because if not its up to the name of the event itself to do the attracting at which point the event is doing the DJ favor by providing them with an audience they can't get by themselves.

i do have to say that your "average" dnb listener, ie:someone who doesnt dj/produce,promote,know tracks, doesnt really care if the person playing is "old skool" or "has status" in the scene...they just wanna hear beats...and probably beacause of this wouldnt necessarily know good mixing from bad...or would care

and in all honestly, i have noticed that its who u know in the case of getting booked...cause imo, there has been an influx in the scene of people who cant really dj/mix very well, but are getting booked for parties and clubs multiple times...sooooo ......

Produce: Dubplate culture will almost guarantee you a booking

Run a Club: I book you, You book me

this seems to how tings are done right now........

Can anyone name DJ's who are strictly TALENTED DJ's(not producers/club promoters) who get booked on Talent alone......other than R.A.W of course

it's not about above or under rated to me. It's the simple fact that these people play for me and they have rocked my club. Plain and simple.

Weather they get booked any where else, well, that's the other promoters in the scene's issue. *ahemtakenoteofthesepeople* I know that I dont play that "book-a-homie-game" so these people are boked on PURE talent alone.

I do however understand the need for pull and whatnot, and my club is obviously very different then the others. Not better or worse, just different.

this is whay I like DJ based music... the music is the star and we the heads/dj/promoters/dancers/desigers/phograpers/internet hermets make up the music...

You have to go out to play out. Or at least that is my experience. You have to show your face and show everyone that you are involved in the scene and about your biz. You can have the dopest CD on earth but if you aren't out there to give it to anyone it won't matter much. People need to have an image in their minds.

It would be nice if booking agents went out and looked for these types but it's much easier for them to grab what's close and throw it on the line-up. So it's all about getting close, not easy for everybody.
