hapy hardcore as you know it today .. no, dnb did NOT evolve from that ...
but, if you listen to what dnb came from, people who don't know the difference could call it happyhardcore.
Good example's of what is NOT happy hardcore, but what DNB came from are acen's "trip to the moon" and johnny L's "hurt you so". |

Re: dnb evolved from happy hardcore
no happy hardcore is not the roots of jungle....
UK hardcore or protojungle are the roots of both styles... but from the begining some artist made more dark and serious tunes and some made fruity protohappycore tunes... yes the artist that later are credited for both played at the same shows but as the styles evolved they rapidly grew apart...
same is true in la history,
I still have fliers for partues were ron d core, doc martin, dj dan, raw , and steve loria all played in the same room... |

Re: dnb evolved from happy hardcore
jungle/dnb and happycore [even tho they are so dissimilar now] evolved separately from a common point [musical ancestor?] back in like 1992..
it was very common to go to a rave and hear housey/pianoey influence breakbeat hardcore running at say 145 bpm.. with pitched up hip hop samples and ragga basslines etc.. a lot of people overlook this era because everything evolved so fast.. but deejays and producers went their own way and took the sounds with them..
if you look at the tempos of both dnb and happycore.. you will see that they've remained very similar over time.. from say 150 - 155 in 1993 to 175 - 180 in 2003.. speeding up as the years went by
i've got old "hardcore" tapes with tunes from dj trace and dj brisk.. things have changed since 1995 hehe
blah blah.. sorry hehe.. i can talk about music for dayz..
basically.. happycore and jungle evolved together.. but on seperate sides of the spectrum..
big up the techno sound!

met him online in 97. after asking if he's heard of 'fukem' and where I can find more from that gabber label, he sends me the first one in the mail with his name and tracks on it. big up selecta! haha have his mix too, 31 tracks in an hour. I used to talk to dj cloudskipper online a lot back in the day as well. got his minimal techno mix before I knew what minimal techno was! damn, that reminds me, I think I sold my picture disc atomic recordings 001. it had a korn hardcore remix. |

Re: dnb evolved from happy hardcore
word up chris...
to add...
basically what happycore and drum and bass split off from was that old rave hardcore s**t... which was in some ways a conglomerate of the two in their very early stages... a lot of cheesy piano s**t, and 4-on-the-floor kick drums but with breakbeats layered over them and whatnot...
it split... some were more into the 4-on-the-floor and cheesy pianos, and others were more into breakbeat-oriented s**t...
the breakbeat offshoot became jungle.
i remember seeing something in i think it was "modulations" (could be wrong) where dj rap was talking about this... pretty interesting stuff...

Re: dnb evolved from happy hardcore
Too tempting not to reply to this...
NO! it didn't evolve that way... it evolved from very high English kids playing American Chicago "house" -which kinda sounded like cut up hip-hop breakbeat tracks at the time- (early 90's) playing records at 45rpm instead of 33rpm like it sez on the dang label!...and dancing... did I mention they were high? On E?...
Happy Hardcore came from kids being VERY high on E.... and dancing... very fast. And laughing... I don't know why they were laughing. Maybe they had gas (laughing). Maybe they didn't take their music super serious and wanted a laugh...

Re: dnb evolved from happy hardcore
techno
breakbeat techno
breakbeat 'ardkore
proto jungle
jungle.
techno
breakbeat techno
breakbeat 'ardkore
hardcore
pretty much like that. but there is a lot of blurring of those lines. and it didn't always follow that order, went back and forth a bit.
but jungle and hardcore both evolved from techno as it got sped up and breakbeats were layered on top of the 4/4 beat. |

Re: dnb evolved from happy hardcore
Although we all know this is not true, I can see where the assumption can manifest. I admit it, I like happycore, and I know that many happycore producers like jungle, so much that they almost always used to throw in an old school jungle breakdown in the middle of their tunes to create some "funky" bizness. Kinda lame I know, but so are candy ravers, like we all used to be. Also, those guys love to throw in breaks in the background to fill in the empty spaces left by the sucky four on the floor construct. I've actually found my cleanest amen samples by sampling from happycore mp3's. |
