How important is apearance in dj'ing?

Now dont start a flame war. this is a serious topic, and I wan't to get everyone's thoughts...
How important is it for a dj to be attractive?

At what point does it become a hindrance/or advantage?

Is it less important for producers?

Is it more important locally, regionally, nationally, internationally?

PLease do not post any "i think this dj is hot" replies unless it is a specific example.

Discuss!

Re: How important is apearance in dj'ing?

[superficial]
I don't think its very important to be "ATTRACTIVE" persea...

Theres more FAT GOOFY HOUSE dj's then you can shake a stick at....

Then yah got DJ IRENE who's not neccesarily pleasing to the eye...

Mark Farina Looks like a total dork but he clocks in many gigs....

Lemme see.. hhrrrrmmmm there are alot of not so attractive boyish but successful female DJ's out there to name but I wont get into that...

So yeah looks and DJing definately dont go hand in hand...

But Djing and getting plenty of ass does go hand in hand LOL....

entertainers of a certain calibre have expectactions of them, that, while superficial, are a "necessary demon" of the industry. I am not advocating supermodel dj's, just trying to start a conversation.

Re: How important is apearance in dj'ing?

you know what i noticed? well, obviously DJ's are a dime a dozen these days but as per the norm, men are the overwhelming majority. in the dnb scene, i can't think of a single unattractive female dj however the same can not be said for it's masculine counterpart. i think it's a matter of proportion/ratio.

but melicious is right. skill is skill. you got it flaunt it. nobody gives a s**t how cool a dj's hair is.

and lol @ dimas: sooo true. look at Dan.

Haha! Im with Karla on this one:
*****************************
to me it is'nt at all but when they are pleasant to look at its ONLY helps :D

there is a couple of them that could be guess models
*coughphearcough*

***********************

Appearance shouldnt matter and doesnt matter to me, but it is a treat when they are cute. But I mainly listen to a DJ because I like his mixes, track selection, and energy. Not because he's cute, if there is a really cute DJ and he sucks ass you best believe Im not going to be dancing. Looks dont buy everything. Djing is about talent and skills!

Re: How important is apearance in dj'ing?

well
there are certain dj "looks"
that i failed to have for something i wanted to do, which really pissed me off.

so id have to say "looks" in the sense you are hip-"counter culture" (aka marketable to youth) help when the person in question has no idea the diffrence between a record and a buffalo chip.

sad, but true.

Re: who is the ugliest dj?

Appearance is irrelevant--Skills are most important... We all realize this, yeah? But I 've got a girlfriend who spins hip-hop & scratches and is constantly being told by her agent and publicist that she needs to lose 10-15 pounds and dress a little sexier. Their reason for this advise is that it makes their job easier as far as promoting her. She's gorgeous and has mad skills...yet... at the end of the day, this is a business in the eyes of the PR people. I can understand taking the business of DJing seriously like a job (Looking the best you can, looking professional, clean, put together, etc.) but that's something else. How attractive you are shouldn't play a part but unfortunately the superficial nature of our society reflects that is does matter. Personally, though I think it's a load of crap. Big Ups to UGLY AZZ DJ's---HA HA HA!!!!!

Alot of people are torn on this one...whether or not its a serious topic for discussion...

Ask a rock promoter if looks are important....

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everyone should look like Ashton Kutcher...Dylan isn't classically attractive, bu the has a "look" like Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes..

Re: How important is it to disappear in dj'ing?

i think that for any field, an attractive person will get more. I wish it wasn't like that, but for most fields it is. In my opinion, a dj is there to give the crowd music, and it don't matter what he/she looks like as long as they do what they are there to do.

oh yeah... and looks are always a factor in any profession, even where they shouldn't be... and its not only about being good looking, as it is with having "a look."

Looks can make it that much easier, or that much harder, regardless of your skill...
