Does Eecue practice what he preaches?
just playing devil advocate here.... sincerely.... this is just a polite question.... dave - please dont cancel/suspend my account for making a polite, intelligent counterpoint....
So JS.com and Fnorg.com both run on slacker (the interface), Apache (webserver), and FreeBSD (webserver operating system), all of which are open source, free software distributions that exist because of gracious donations/giving back from thier users.
Dave - do you/ or have you made any donations to Sourceforge, Freebsd.org, or apache.org, and if so would you be willing to provide some sort of proof? Just wondering if you practice the same principals you are pushing... |

Re: Does Eecue practice what he preaches?
I believe (could be wrong about this) that he only pays bandwidth cost and manages the servers himself (I could swear he said they were physically housed at his work - agian could be wrong).
Im not stating that the site is free, simply wondering if Dave is requiring donations for a free site, while not applying those same ethics to his own dealings.
Im pretty well versed in the business of webhosting and webmanagement. My uninformed opinon (conjecture) is that the networking/referal/exposure benefits Eecue reaps from this site FAR outweigh the cost he pays for bandwidth. Effective, intelligent marketing would be icing on the cake... I personally charge $70 per hour for private IT consulting.... im sure dave, with his extensive know-how and experience could command even more...
Why dont any of the other collaborative sites similar to JS that I regularly visit/use demand donations? They operate just fine with both more and fewer registered users.
Finally, if Dave charged a flat $5 or $10 a month to use the site, who would stay and pay??? Very few in my opinion... |

DAVE is using those products to run his site.... the end user/web page viewer does not pay the licensing fee for web hosting software and the OS is runs on. Those companies are grassroots organization, and the development of linux based software is extreamly costly. If you all feel we should pay for bandwidth (cost of operation), he should do the same and support the products that sustain his sites. |

ok now you're being ignorant. dave only asked for $200! so much of this site is his work, why should he have to pay for people to go on it? so what if he gets A contact or TWO here n there through this site...you really think he's going to make bank off concentricbeats.com (a site dedicated to a dvd about the LA scene), etc? all this music stuff is his hobby, something to the side of his normal life. his job sustains his income, he is not ripping anybody off.
i guess if you don't know eecue you could think a lot of terrible things about him. personally i know him, have been through some rough times with the guy, but through that i've come to respect him more than just about anybody in the scene.
i'm telling you i doubt the $ generated from his hobbies are going in his pockets cuz he doesn't need it! t hat's why he has a job (that's quite lucrative i hear). dave has been behind the scene for a long ass time and has a good track record so why even doubt him? maybe i'm over-appreciative and too quick to dispell conspiracy theories. maybe i'm gullible & naive. and maybe you're paranoid. |
