Dubplate Culture Ruinin The Vibe
this topic is just comin up after readin the one about dj's not playin any older tunes, but goin instead for the dubs.
i'm always disappointed at massives to hear dj's from around the world because i expect them to bring a certain style and instead they whore themselves out to the dubplates and i end up hearing rewind after rewind after FUCKING rewind of the same tune by 3 different djs in the same night.
for example, marky. every time i've seen him i expect to hear some brazilian dnb besides lk, like the more swingin tunes, you know the sound. anyway i always end up getting my ears pounded by top 10 tunes.
here's some other djs that i would expect a style from. if you've seen them, have they been up to their image?

Re: Dubplate Culture Ruinin The Vibe
marcus intalex started playing ragga when i got to the club.... he was playing back to back with calibre (who's music is too weak for me) and it looked like calibre was getting pissed, cause marcus intalex's style completely changed suddenly.... i don't really like either producer/dj, so i don't know why i went anyways. i guess just to check out intalex, and he impressed me with some last minute amen biznass. pretty cool eh?
yeah, i agree.... dubplates are simply hyperbole. i purposely do not talk about released tracks that definetly own any current 'dub'. it's just like throwing parties, anyone that wants to can get up in it.......

klute doesn't only produce "trancy" dnb. if you ask me, his dj'ing is about as diverse as his production. something about evo sniffer doesn't sound too f**king trancy...
i wouldn't say anyone wants to be held down to a certain "style" that people come to expect from them. i believe most cats want to be known as "diverse" dj's that can spin anything.

Re: Dubplate Culture Ruinin The Vibe
I like this thread. . . On another tip regarding dubplates, what do you think about dub plates getting played out (esp. on dnbarena) overseas before they even get released? Like foreigner, bullit time, the vault, barcelona, pac man, etc. These tunes were played out by the UK producers for months and months before they were released? Doesnt it spoil the tunes, and make them trite, cliche and played out before the US junglists get a chance to drop them? Whats your opinion YO ? . . . |

Yeah, the tracks get played out so much that after a while I don't even want to buy the record for my own personal collection. Some tunes are different, of course. |

Re: Dubplate Culture Ruinin The Vibe
if youre from nicaragua, do you eat tabuoli?
if youre from palestine do you eat chicken and rice?
on the same token, do you eat JUST rice and thats it? no, you gotta have some veggies and chicken or some shizz!
KEEP IT FRESH! oldies, unreleased, currents, its all good s**t and all it takes is a few heater hitz and just study for an hour or two, and be creative
it is frustrating to see that sometimes. however most of those guys hold down thier own style.
BUT: most headliners may be thinking about the time that they are playing and runnin' with the vibe.
they should also weigh in the fact of thier own draw. |

Re: Dubplate Culture Ruinin The Vibe
pop tunes are played at pop events.
if you're pissed all you hear from them is pop, tunes stop seeing them at pop events. anytime there is drum'n'bass with 1-4 other areas, chances are you're going to hear POP drum'n'bass. i bet if you saw marky and patife last year at bluebeat you'd have a different perspective. but yeah these raves will have you thinking that's all these guys play. |

Re: Dubplate Culture Ruinin The Vibe
I agree with most of you guys. I think dubplates should get released sometime within a few months of being pressed. I agree with you there Jayvon. Gambit, I agree dubplates are important and keep the scene healthy and fresh. And Mainframe, I agree that dubplates are key for pushing your own sound. Werd. So dubplates are good for the most part, but if it takes too long to release, the exclusivivity of plates can make a song stale before its even released. Nice to see so many different perspectives. Big up all the local stateside producers! Keep it coming! You know who you are. peace. |

Re: Dubplate Culture Ruinin The Vibe
werd, i also think its cool to be able to have some exclusives and vip's cut to dubs...i mean sure it sucks if you cant buy it, but if you have the priveledge of getting a hot tune vip'ed for you or a tune that has been deleted from history or as a forthcoming release and you are one of a few that has it...that is boss supreme, and thats what seperates most dj's....do you guys all go see r.a.w. cause you think he's gonna play the newest kemal dubplate? doubtfully....its more likely cause he's got some vip/exclusive (im using terms very loose here) dubs that he's unleashing, things you wouldnt hear from anyone else.....
dont know where i was going with that ( i wanna go home, ive been at work for 9 hours already) |

Re: Dubplate Culture Ruinin The Vibe
if a producer works hard and puts a lot of time and effort into making a dope tune i think it they should have the right to keep it to themselves or give it just to their friends and keep it on dub for months or years or however long they want. it's up to them really. if u don't like it then go make your own dope tune and do whatever u want with it. if it hurts their record sales because by the time it does come out nobody wants it anymore then thats their problem |

Re: Dubplate Culture Ruinin The Vibe
The thing is Marky has always been a highly skilled "tear-out" DJ. He doesn't play "soft," liquid funk, or muzak drum and bass.
