pay up or shut up

so in a couple of days i'm going to buy my own server so i can take off all my sites from this server.

junglescene will be all by it's self (along with fnorg / dmt / anti etc) on this server.

you all will be responsible to pay the $100 monthly charge or this server will go dark. and i won't care because none of my s**t will be on here.

i will program a little thing that shows how much is owed and when it is owed by.

also you all might want to donate a bit extra to buy some more ram as that is the reason the server is slow.

but yeah i could care less at this point... i have things to focus on that:

a. don't bring me hassle / drama / insults / gray hairs

b. have a positive effect on my life.

c. aren't on there way out anyway.

d. actually earn as opposed to costing me money.

the little additions to jsm were my last additions to this site (other than the "how much is owed" meter i'm going to program. i don't plan on putting any more energy into this site or scene.

you should put a counter (countdown money clock thing) in big l.e.d. letters next to the js logo so that we all now how much is owed ;-]

i give this place one month then its gone. thats too bad. if everyone pitched in i would donate more but i feel if this place stayed around for a bit, it would only be because a few people actually care

what if for someone to gain ranks such as respected junglist they have to donate? otherwise they are stuck a level down from there and have to start a new screen name. and each rank they want costs more and more.. like $20 to reach hardcore status, $5 for respected junglist. etc. JUST A THOUGHT

how much does it cost to get your own piece of junglescene again (i.e. unifire.junglescene.com)? i forgot.

and i totally agree e-mail shouldn't be free. there are countless other sites that offer free e-mail. if js'ers wanna communicate they have jsm's. isn't that enough of a hook-up??

How many times must this be done? Everyone should be well aware of the financial aspect to getting this site together and keeping it up. Too many people bitching yet no one helping out.

absolutely no sarcasm here... but why dont you sell the domain to me for face value.... then Ill run it myself with all the current functionality, without posting a bunch of photos of me, and without charging a dime.... ill run it on a $59 business dsl line outta my crib and users will have about the same responsiveness as they see now... im serious.... if the current server can handle 10 or more domains concurrently, a dedicated server would do fine with minimal bandwidth (virtually nothing but text going over the wire... why the need for so much ram and bandwidth???)... not trying to start wwIII.... just food for thought....

find me a DSL connection that can burst to 8 megs UPSTREAM (it really bursts up to and handle a sustained 1.5 meg upstream.

if you think you could do it on a DSL line you are high... at least not one for $59 a month.

so yeah man there is no way you can run js out of your house on anything less than a t1 ... which will be saturated and get WAY slower than this site gets at peak hours.

and just for reference... what are some high traffic sites you host?

and do you have php/mysql/html knowledge?

i'm not going to sell it to some s**t talking schmuck who has no clue.

btw in 99 when i started this site i did host on a DSL line.

that's when there weren't 100+ concurrent users on it every day at 4pm

eek, you aint gonna never stop JS, so quit threating these poor kidds that you will. that being said, why dont we re-write the backend in servlets [PHP isn't realistic for apps of this size] in a distributed fasion - i.e. replicate across N number of mirrors every night at 2am. that way about 20 people can run it on their DSL lines. the exception being JSM - which would have to run localized. or perhaps a decentralized asyncronous peer to peer app written using SWT on port 80 to skip thru firewalls? lots of crazy ideas, but my point is.. it can be done for free by distributing both the tasks, and the bandwidth to the community. im ready to sign up if you are.

but some people do see how much work and time i put into this site.

and f**k no i'm rewriting this s**t in servlets... either way it needs a db backend... and either way it's gonna eat alot of ram.

this server only gets 10% of the traffic that worldind.com does and it runs the same setup just on fatter hardware.

it's a pure hardware issue...

hahah servlets. can you give me some examples of high traffic sites you have programmed using java?

i mean if you are offering to write your own open source java version of junglescene (which would still have to connect to a central database) i'm all for it.

that would rock.

but if you are saying i should scrap what i have here because it doesn't work you are high. the site works great. we just need more RAM. but getting my personal sites off this box will help too.

i think we should keep the UI - it works but the backend would have to be rethought - fairly common evolution for a site that starts small and grows big.. then needs an enterprise solution

can you give me an example of something similar you have done that gets the traffic this site does?

worldind.com gets over a million hits a day and uses the same setup that this site has. there are no problems because it's on a 4 ways xenon server with 4 gb of ram.

php is very happy in the enterprise.

plus honestly i hate running java apps... that s**t runs slow and just isn't a native app...

i would be more into just programming a carbon interface for those who are on os x and everyone else can use their browsers.

yea ok. maybe you need a web farm then.. but my original point was to make it a mirrored app [so you wont have to spend $ on bandwidth] - i dont really wanna get into the php/enterprise / 2-tier / 3-tier argument.. even CGI apps would *real* fast on a real expensive hardware array..

like i said before i'm not looking to change the entire site and backend.

this site can scale up to a million hits a day no problem with the proper hardware.

i don't see it going there... in fact i've seen the traffic decline in the last year. not a huge amount, but it is the first time i haven't seen it grow.

i'm sure fnorg has taken alot of that traffic.

anyway man i don't really see the point of your suggestion but that's ok. i'm not asking for a way to change the site. i'm not really asking for anything here other than that people pay for the hosting.
