"musician's" custom ear plugs
I was fitted for some today. I recall people asking about these. I paid $150 and they will be here in about 2 weeks. I think we should ALL have them. You don't want to be deaf like me, do you? |

Those foam ones are awful -- block the sound. The musician custom made ones lower the decibel level. So you can still hear the music (so I'm told) and it's not all muffled and nasty.
I think pretty much any audiologist can make them for you. They tested my hearing, asked me if I wanted the musician ones (that allow sound through) or the total blocking ones (if you have a job where you are around loud noise all the time, etc.). I chose the musician ones. Then they put this little cotton cork with strings next to my eardrum, squirted some blueish gel in there, let it harden for about 5 minutes and poof. I wait for 2 weeks and get the plugs.

I heard about these before. I read about them in Xlr8r mag or something like that a couple of years back. I hear that a lot of dj's acutally use them, and you can block out lower frequency levels from bashing your eardrum in. I always wanted to get a pair. No better time than now I guess. |

It's the hi-end that does the most damage and all damage is cumulative. That ringing in your ear? If you thunk that goes away after a while just b/c you dont' really hear it as much after a night out you're dead wrong...you just get used to it. But eventually it gets to the point where you can't anymore. Tinnitus doesn't even really have a clinical explanation as to why people get it. It can come from loud noise exposure, scretaries get it from typing all day but even some individuals get it from stress. Musician's attenuators is what you want. Unlike foam plugs, these are custom fitted ear molds fitted w/ a scientifically engineered filter that lowers the decibals across the entire freq spectrum in proportion to what you're listening to...hence, it still sounds the same, just lower...as if someone went over to the mixing board and turned the level down. You can get filters rated @ different decibal ratings. I have 15 db filters...I would suggest those as a plug to wear everytime you go out and you can spin in them too. I am going to finally get 25's b/c these are not low enough for me anymore when I just hang out. I need more attenuation.
