Infrastructure=Growth in Stateside DnB

i firmly belive that the only way to grow u.s. dnb is to plan for it today. i feel that the artistic side of the music is well represented and will only improve in the future. what i see as needing help is the planning and execution of ideas. people need to invest time and money in this music. basic capitalism if you will. i'm taking about someone or a group putting money down and expecting and receiving a reasonable return on the investment. we have this at the club level(crews like 45 psi seem to be moving in the right direction) but i'd like to see this in other areas as well.

something like the valve sound system. something that would make the non dnb heads excited. can you imagine the press that a given event or crew would get with something of the caliber?! the thought of something like that really makes me exicted!

i don't profess to have the silver bullet in the search for a larger fan base for the music. what i do belive is that planning and execution needs to come before we can really expect to see major changes.

anyone have any thoughs on this issue? does the current system have room for major growth? what changes need to be made(if any) for the music to really catch fire with the masses?(non artistic)

Re: Infrastructure=Growth in Stateside DnB

only the truely advanced listener will find thier way to drum & bass. its at the pinnacle of elec. music.
you cant forcefeed people unfortunately. so most are scared off by the beats. especially the young ladies. theres always exceptions though.

Re: Infrastructure=Growth in Stateside DnB

I've introduced many people i come in contact with to drum and bass. The typical response i get, is that it is too fast. People don't understand how anyone could dance to a style of music that quick.

Keep pushing it though.

Re: Infrastructure=Growth in Stateside DnB

i think a good test case would be compare listeners of DnB to others styles. DnB heads tend to be very critical of any trak - and they *should* be, it's what keeps the standard high. as opposed to the average slob that goes to the meat market on a saturday night to get drunk n shake their ass to whatever happens to be coming out the speakers. its the difference between teen-pop and, say, jazz. a very different listener base. its also important to note that this aint nuthn new.. Mozart, while working for the Court, more or less writing pop songs for the Royals to shake their pinkies to, once said: "they pay too much for what i do, and too little for what i could do." and inevitably, its the traks that the Court *didn't* like which proved to stand the test of time. i.e. some music aint foe the masses.. but there's no reason why peeps can't still be diggn it 300 years from now.

Re: Infrastructure=Growth in Stateside DnB

yeah, mr. evil has a very good point. Even in DNB though, people prefer the simplistic, easy to dance to beats over the technically complex forms that COULD be produced. But then again, dnb is dance music, so you have to cater to the masses.

Re: Infrastructure=Growth in Stateside DnB

what is the valve system? I think the scene is great, i support it, and hope my money gets to the selektas, but i have to be honest, my gut tells me if it became popular it would saturate and get f**ked up...everybody i meet or know is spinning dnb which sometimes is a sign of a peak....i visited my moms and she had limewax on the 1 and sinatra on the 2 and....

Re: Infrastructure=Growth in Stateside DnB

we're trying to de exactly that up here in boston ...we beleive that its not the music thats holding itself back its the people who listen to it. I dont know how it is in cali but up here for the most part people who are into dnb believe thaT ITS THEIRS, ITS UNDERGROUND , AND NOONE ELSE SHOULD LISTEN TO IT. I think thats bulls**t drum n bass is the music of the future but we have it now. you can incorporate any kind of music into dnb thats what makes it so great its versatile. so what we decided to do is launch a new marketing campaign up here. we're not changing anything except bringing in an uneducated crowd . we're making flyers that look like they should be for a wet t shirt contest and littering colleges with flyers.....and its working we're exposing people to dnb in a way thats comfortable to them.thats all you gotta do...theres a reason everyone wants to hear music they know the words to.....comfort. best of luck to you down their find what works for you and run with it.
