we have some things in common with real soldiers..

sleep deprevation, going without food, smoking the herbs (vietnam soldiers), we also have that "crazy" look in our eye...

oh man. hahahaha. basically it was first used in reference to Jospehine Baker, one of the most prolific female entertainers in history, imo. basically when she went abroad to France to perform they exploited her artistic expression (music, dance, presentation, stage presence etc) due to the fact that she was black artist AND female and thus and reduced her to commodity of fetishism based on her exoticness. and then, the term popped up later in the electronic music culture... under different subtext obviously but still.... i find it rather interesting words are appropriated to define things.

in my mind, because i've been aware of this, the term has a less than attractive connotation to me but only because I learned about the origin of the term while studying music.

the original "junglists" were inhabitants of the "concrete jungle" [a ghetto in kingstown, jamaica] - basically some hard moe fukrs.. "jungle music" was more of a general term to refer to "black music" [and def racist] though what we call 'jungle' isn't associated with color as much as it is associated with being 'urban' i.e. the ref to a 'concrete jungle' lives on.. "soldiers" is way more hiphop than jungle tho.

well, not to sound super academic or anything but colonialization/the concept of war & conquering are all directly correlated to the things stated above. soooo... taking all that into consideration and applying it to technology and contemporary culture... it's not suprising the toons come out with the titles incorporating words like "helicopter" "war head" and "turbulence" etc would pop up as a result.

Lets break it down.

I don't know about you guys, but to me - being a soldier is fighting for something you believe in. I believe in the music. i believe in the culture, I believe in the struggle to keep our music community alive and thriving.

I feel our community IS an army. There are hundreds of us out there. We are an army of dedicated people. Dedicated to this sound we all love so much. Dedicating to fighting to keep it from going under and disappearing into the "pop" abyss.... most of you are hardcore jungle heads. You love your music and thats that. Think about how many more there are out there. An Army? Yes.

For me, it just MAKES SENSE. The community is my army, I am a soldier, and Jungle is my plight.

The camo, the decorations, the war influences all come from that common thread that we ARE at war. We are at war with the rest of the world when it comes to our music. I mean, how many people out there really "get it". They want to stop our sound, stop our rights to party, label us and put as away as hoodlums. But we are stronger than that. We have a mission to get out there and let our sound be heard. To represent ourselves proper. We run in the underground ya'll. In the underground you gotta be ready for whats to come and if that means putting on my camo - my gear and painting my face and standing my ground for MY MUSIC - shiiiiiit. I'm a JUNGLIST baby. Underground drumz will NEVER die!!!!

we are soldiers against dumbed down music made for the general populus.
we need to stick together if we want to survive and grow. support jungle/dnb/ragga/breakcore in all it's forms and your local clubs!!!!!
