think he spun early. Took my 9 yr old to a steel pulse concert at santa anita few yrs back(he loves reggae)...mad weed...big mistake we live and learn, we left and they gave me my money back. This kid probably does shows early and hopefully his responsible parents make sure he takes off before it gets wild. I let my son's go to some of my shows...Long as no one's blowing smoke at em(junglist parents are very, very responsible you know), I think they'll be alright. |

Re: 8 Yr. Old DJ outta AZ
kids are more suseptible to hearing loss than adults...
...I always trip when i see parents bring their babies to dnb bbq's and park their toddler in front of a bass bin.
Decibels: what are safe levels?
Decibels measure the loudness of sound. Both the amount of noise and the length of time of exposure determine the amount of damage. Damage can be caused to hair cells of the inner ear and the hearing nerve by one-time exposure to loud sounds like an explosion or by continuous or repeated exposure to noise. Sounds that are less than 80 decibels are unlikely to cause hearing loss. Noise levels greater than 80 decibels can be hazardous and can damage your hearing. Many experts agree that continual exposure to more than 85 decibels is hazardous to your hearing.
The noise chart below can act as a guide to the average decibel levels of everyday sounds and can help you judge which sounds are potentially dangerous to your hearing. It is important to note that as decibel intensity increases by units of 10, each increase is 10 times the lower figure. In addition, noise exposure is cumulative so be aware of your exposure to noise throughout the day - at work, home, traveling and in recreational settings. As a general rule, if you have to shout to be heard, then you should avoid the situation or use ear protection.
Dangerous levels:
150 dB = rock music peak
140 dB = firearms, jet engine
130 dB = jackhammer
120 dB = jet plane take-off, amplified rock music at 4-6 ft., car stereo, band practice
120 dB = ambulance siren
120 -140 dB = Motorcycles, firecrackers
Extremely loud:
105 dB = helicopter
100 – 115 dB = iPods used at maximum levels
100 dB = snowmobile, chain saw, pneumatic drill, night clubs
95 dB = motorcycle
90 dB = lawnmower, shop tools, truck traffic, subway
90 dB = noisy toys
80-96 dB = restaurants
Very loud:
80 dB = alarm clock, city street traffic
70 dB = vacuum cleaner
Normal levels:
60 dB = normal conversation
35 dB = whispered voice
Unsafe Levels of Exposure:
110 decibels or louder : regular exposure of more than one minute risks permanent hearing loss.
100 decibels: No more than 15 minutes of unprotected exposure is recommended.
85 decibels: Prolonged exposure to any noise above 85 decibels can cause gradual hearing loss. |

not a good environment for an 8 year old...the picture alone makes me cringe...but someone with undeveloped ideals and morals really shouldn't be around alot of people that are experimenting with theirs....shouldn't he be allowed to mature a little bit before being thrown into the fire?

If the parents aren't "all there", then the promoters should be responsible for not allowing "kid's" in. Bringing up the controversy of all age events. Even though I started going to parties at 15, I think it's gone crazy overboard. |

i've seen 20-30 year olds do worse than that.... with better timeslots to.
What better time to get the bugs out of your DJ carrier... when your 8 and playing opening slots.
But yeah, i'd be keeping a close eye on him if i was his parent. The clubs not a good\save place to go threw puberty....
humm, and 8 year old with a 16 year old groupie. maybe that wouldn't be to bad

Re: 8 Yr. Old DJ outta AZ
Agree exactly with Riccardo on this one.
If he's no prodigy, he shouldn't be exposed to dangerous sound levels on a regular basis - and god knows what else at raves.
Let him DJ at home, and at parties in his backyard or something, there is no reason to parade him around at raves. He has plenty of time to do that when he gets a little older, and is more equipped to deal with those kind of situations, and is more fully developed.

Re: 8 Yr. Old DJ outta AZ
our son is 2 and half years old and ever since we could remember he's been going through his dads records, puttn em on the decks, scratchn and messn w/the mixer. he sit's on his dad's lap and helps him pick samples from the laptop and watch's him produce w/Cubase. it is no doubt that our son will likely follow in his father's footsteps whether we like it or not. if he happens to have awesome skills at the age of 8 and gets booked for an opening slot at a party you better believe we'r gonna be sittin right next to him makin sure his focus is on his set.
this world is out of control as it is,by the time he is 8 children his age will be exposed to an insane amount of stuff whether they'r at a show or walkin down the street. it is the parents responsibility to guide they're children and EXPLAIN what is going on around them NOT to shelter they'r eyes. that is the worst thing you could do. kids need street smarts as well as institutional education. i see to many grown folks f**kin they're lives up cus they were sheltered and suppressed as children.
and yes earplugs are a must!
i see to many rasta mom's bringin they're babies to shows. infants are to damn young to be exposed to that level of music. |

Re: 8 Yr. Old DJ outta AZ
you made a good point about the infants, and I think that same point rings true for 8 year olds, ear plugs or not. sound at those decibel levels really aren't even safe for adults, but at least adult ears are fully developed - and we assume the risk for ourselves.
also, if a kid has such a gift for music, why put them at risk at a young age for losing/damaging their hearing. Noise Induced Hearing Loss is serious business, and such a musical gift is something they will want to enjoy/exploit for their entire lifetime.
I guess I just don't really understand the argument of letting 8 year olds DJ at clubs on massive sound systems no matter how cool it might be - because even with ear plugs, they will still be exposed to dangerous decibel levels.
