here is something i always think about when i see crowds like this . . .. how is it that DnB can draw a crowd this size and someone like Lil Flip or TI or even like Lootpack could not do so on their on, YET they can go Platinum or sell at least 100,000 copies of an album and DnB can not come close to that??? There is something wrong IMO . . . i dunno, but yeah that crowd is spectacular . . . . |

but even in Europe like Kanye West's album is pushing 4 million sold, but i doubt any DnB albums are pushing that. It is not a criticism of DnB but just a wonder. Cause i doubt Kanye West could draw 12,000 in that arena or even in arenas here (i mean he is not even the headliner on tours now, Usher). My boyz in a "underground" hip hop group (who shall name nameless) are pushing madd numbers in Japan and Europe, but their shows only get like 1,000 people max when they headline out there. This is the same for rock??? I mean DnB in Europe has festivals that can reach like 10K-20K-30K-40K people but even if the headliner puts out a solid album i doubt (i could be wrong) they sell as much as a Jay Z (well duhhh u say), but even like Lootpack or Atmosphere etc.. This is all speculative (cause i can not check Europes #s (sells) like i constantly do the USA's (for dnb and other eletronic music genres) .. .. soundscan. Is it maybe cause DnB is strictly club/party driven? Maybe cause tunes fall in and out of the "mainstream" within DnB so fast that an average person can not keep up? Is it cause the music is hard to attain (via vinyl and not every1 having tables)? Is it cause the music is a mixxed form of music rather then songs which "stand alone"? maybe people wanna go to a festival-like event where its more of a community type of atmosphere over there vs a spotlight on a single artist? meaning.. when you can hear a whole range of dope tunes from different people, vs different songs from the same guy/girl/group, maybe they enjoy that more?
it seems here theres a big image factor that everyone buys into.. maybe its not so much of a factor there? i havent been there so i cant say..
eh. i dont know.

Dont forget. DnB is still a realitively young music. Hip Hop and rap has around 10 years longer history.
AND, alot of the more mainstream DnB tunes are crazy dance floor smashers with wicked distorted bass. Many people compare DnB to Punk and Metal. And even though some punk rock has become mainstream, its only the softer side of it thats known about. And for the most part real metal is not mainstream in the States. When DnB does finally become accepted as a pop/mainstream music i am willing to bet that it will be something on the softer side. IE Liquid Funk or Jump Up.
But also, the songs formats are gonna have to change a little bit to be radio ready. People arent gonna have the attention span to listen to 1 to 2 minutes of intro drumz and such. And many many many people dont listen to music without words. They need to have something to get stuck in their head to sing along with. Think about it, how often do you ever hear instrumental songs on the radio? |

Its a party scene, those people are there to club, not because theyre rabid drum & Bass heads. You forget that unlike the domestic scene much of the attendees are just looking for a place to drugs, that are stronger and cheaper than they are here.The fact that so many people passed away at the event is indicative of the fact that they arent there to listen to music.
Remember how many people used to show up for massives?... 65,000 people at the orange show and the headliner was like rhazel.

Aero's observation is super on-point.
They weren't there for the Metalheadz, or to trainspot, they didn't know the names of the DJs or the names of the tunes.. they just wanted to go to a big big party on their weekend out.
Makes for a much more 'fun' and less-critical environment when the crowd is filled with people other than dnb 'experts' (in my personal opinion) - shame about the drug usage and deaths though, of course. |
