contracts?
Its a polarizing title but i was curious about contracts.
How do you guys in the forum insure that you get paid, obviously there are a million contracts to use, but I was curious what you do to protect yourself from clients/promoters who have so many costs to juggle and might not have your best interests in mind.

Re: promoters who dont pay!
Well i don't really deal with promoters too often in my line of work, but I always take a 50% deposit up front before I start work. Also I do all my communication through email so I have a record of it if I need to take action in court. |

Re: promoters who dont pay!
Since I mainly design websites, I usually do the same thing as eek. I hardly ever deal with promoters these days. But I do request a 50% deposit up front.
If the project is over a couple thousand, I will let the client pay me in 3rd's instead of half of upfront.
And yea, everything in email for sure. |

Re: promoters who dont pay!
yeah i also do the 1/3 payment some times, a 1/3 up front, 1/3 when we reach some milestone and the remaining 1/3 when the project is done. |

Re: promoters who dont pay!
I typically email a contract I made and request a returned signed copy. I've often wondered if email correspondence regarding a job can be legally binding. I'd prefer just relying on email, but always figured you need something signed. |

Re: promoters who dont pay!
It's technically written correspondence and thus would be legally binding, but a signed document would be even better.
IANAL |
