bout time!!!!

you gotta love all the SF oakland hats that say LA...nice adaptation. Also, i dig the fact that they are reppin skid row as the location. It'll do alot to help get rid of people stigma. Not that this solves alot of problems but it sure brings a fresh coat of green to the neighborhood.


thanks for the reminder man, now i have one less reason to go to SF hahaha..

Its crazy to think that there is no LA equivelent of 'UP'. It took them moving here for a decent artist based store/brand/gallery to come to los angeles.

Is it the dynamics of los angeles that prevents this from happening? The original "collective" idea blossomed in SF, I hope that LA doesnt co-op the whole thing and turn it into Upper Playground hollywood. It's a double edged sword of artist based fashion. I love jeremey fish and will buy all his s**t....I just hope it doesnt become the uniform of industry insiders and fake hipsters alike. The quaintness of the original is alive in well in spirit, i just hope that it isn't destroyed by ego and trends which the masses embrace in our beautiful city.

I'm not hating on profit, because thats the whole point. I just hope they never loose sight of the original intent, because as we know, so many people who move to LA, get caught up...


we'll know for sure if they start selling trucker caps, and day glo kaffiyehs.

well sf has a much smaller tighter community of artist so this kind of collective was mor elikely to happen in a smaller scene... also the fact that juxtapoz is based out of sf and they get a first hand look at the scene gives those artist a greater deal of expossure..

I think there is already a thriving art community ... from craola to esteban oriol to mr. cartoon, saber, david choe, gaijin fujita, robby conal, etc, etc...
the issue is we haven't yet had the proper media exposure...
and all those sf cats want to do is sell out to skate of clothing brands out here were trying to make an art movement not a fashion movement.

I agree, los angeles has an amazing artist community, my renaissance reference was more to the fact that a specific part of downtown is blowing up right now.

As far as exposure tho...i dont know man. We live in LA, home of exposure. hell we've had the 7th letter issue of juxtapoz that came out the same week as the 7th letter issue of la weekly. There are deserving artists who get their exposure, my question was more related to the actual store. I guess we've got some places like la luz de jesus and other small gallery/boutique spots, but I cant think of any artist brand that has the legitimate side of business covered as well, Gallery/store/brand/e commerece/ even custom furniture.

It is true tho that UP has been using some amazing los angeles artists as well, I guess I hadn't thought about that part completely. It's true, a store doesn't legitimize an artistic movement, it was more of just the collective/commerce side of things that I'm thinking about.
