MAC or PC?

heres a great way to start a section, with the never ending debate between platforms...

I'm looking to finally make the change to mac but I still feel attached to my PC, as a designer why should I go to MAC?

skip the whole, industry standard arguement, that ones old, give me specific incidents or even just anicdotes as to why your mac has helped you become a born again designer... sell me.

Re: MAC or PC?

I was brought up on an old Apple by my uncle. I forget what it was exactly, and I think as I grew and got my own PC first, I think I was just expecting the Mac platform look.

I've always hated the PC look/feel overall, but can make way way on either. I currently have a PC at home and a kick ass G5 at work. When it comes to design, I really can't find anything specific that sets the Mac apart, but there is definitely just a more professional presentation it seems to have.

Re: MAC or PC?

The PC feels like it was put together with those free legos you get in the Happymeal, while the Mac feels like motherf**king Voltron.

Re: MAC or PC?

my analogy has always been mac = porshe, pc = chevy.

can "they're just cooler" be a good reason?

Re: MAC or PC?

Ive been a PC dude my whole life. But Ive got my eye on a mac now. Here's why...

Print: Quarking documents on the mac makes a lot more sense. Your fonts are the same, its easy to get recent versions. Everyone says quark is goes both ways, but whenever I have sent something I did in Quark to a printer, the guys at the print shop didnt know what to do (sometimes, didnt even want to open it!)

Video: Final Cut, Shake, Motion... Mac is ruling the video graphics realm. I can hang for a while on the PC, but Im getting left in the dark ages here - Mac is truly becoming the way to go for video graphics.

Here's where the mac can't cut it:

Web: I just cant imagine doing web on a mac. To me, its a total pc thing. Coding, scripting, splitting up graphics, browers, tools... the best web stuff (imo) comes from pc users.

3D: Mac is getting better, a bit, with 3D. Ever since OSX came out, a lot of unix/irix apps were easy to crossover to OSX (with its unix core). So applications like Maya are now on the mac. BUT I can't think of many Maya users that are using the mac version. There are way too many tools for 3D (rendering, batch tools, object exporters, and serveral other applications) that are PC only. This probably boils down to price, and in a renderfarm a computer that looks pretty vs. a hotrod machine that can crank out renders - the PC is going to win.

I love my PC, I built the thing with my bare hands, have ripped it apart, swapped parts out of it for years... but Im hitting the ceiling with it, and I think Im ready to enter the next level.

Im gonna use both

Well, if you put it in such a professional light....... =)

I suppose it would be a question of exactly what you are using it for.

- What type of design?
- What else do you plan to use it for?
- How beefy of a PC can you build for the same price as a Mac?

Re: MAC or PC?

You really can't lose with a MAC as long as you're not a gamer. One great thing about em, is you can put Virtual PC on it, and run PC programs. Havn't done it, but seems simple enough. Also security is much tighter with macs. I havn't had a virus in 10 years!!! Most design apps are available and easy to cross over to.

Re: MAC or PC?

I'm happier on a Mac, but I truly believe that if you're any type of professional, whether you do graphics, audio production, video or what have you, you should own both. Seriously.

VPC is too slow and OSX86 is too limited, and in this day and age it's pretty cheap to have at least 1 bleeding edge Mac and PC in your arsenal at all times. That way you can handle anything that comes your way.

Re: MAC or PC?

i do own pcs and macs but almost all of my pcs (except for my mebius) run FreeBSD. so yes i keep a pc around and I know how to use one but I hate windows and I hate connecting to a hostile environment (the internet) with a computer running windows.

dude I so badly want an iPod nano, but mostly as a portable storage device.

Re: MAC or PC?

I've come to accept and use Windows for what it is...a 'window' into what 95+% of computer users have to put up with. There are perks, like...

GoogleEarth
Certain Mac-unfriendly video formats (like asx and some wmv-encoded mpeg's)
Most 3D games

Oh, and a copy of Nod32 really helps.

Re: MAC or PC?

I have a PC becuase back in the day when I purchased it I didn't know any better.

it's alright.

however, I know that I am going to HAVE to get a mac in order to be considered a real designer.

Re: MAC or PC?

NOT ANOTHER POST ON THIS !!!!!

Anyways Might as well put in my 2 cents
Conar..

Well if your really going to get a Wac
UHhh HUMMMmmm sorry I mean a MAC
then go for it, they have a real low chance of ever getting a virus while cursin the web but thats about it..
But honestly as far as performance
goes Im going to have to go with a PC
My PC Is a 3.4 gig processor with
1066 front side bus with 4 gigs of ram
it smokes any Mac on the market
If you want a good PC your just going
to have to custom build it.
Thats prob why so many people buy Macs these days cause they're so dam Cpu retarded these days and they want everything on a silver platter ready to go... But if thats what you want go for it..
By the way why do you think that in
2006 all macs are switching over to
Intel chipsets hummmm...
anyways good luck makin a choice..

Re: MAC or PC?

I've been a mac grrl since I can remember. but since i'm forced to work on Pc's at work. I've gotten used to them.

and here's something.. I can't believe I'm gonna admit to.. actually in hopes someone will tell me I'm wrong..

something the pc has that the mac does not..that I want REAL and I mean REAL bad is the computer screens you can draw on. it's placed in a drawing table but instead of a "light box" it's the computer screen! it's f**king dope and I want one .. and i've heard the mac doesn't do that yet.. .just seems like a natural way to draw , instead of using a mouse or a waccon tablet..

anyways.. i work on both but driving around fishing for files I enjoy my mac over a pc.

Re: MAC or PC?

MAC > Windows.
Plain and simple.

OS ten is by far the worlds sweetest OS.
It's superb on so many levels. Having the stability, user friendliness, and being within a *nix environment while having a gorgeous GUI is like no other OS.

Designing on either is fairly similar, though I prefer to use a mac's interface and the ability macs have in processing everything is much more stable, fast and smooth overall.

Whoever said that mac processors aren't as good or as fast as some 3ghz pc processor simply doesn't understand the architechture behind how a chip does what it does. A G5 chip running at 2ghz is basically doing the same thing a 3ghz chip is doing while consuming less energy. People who think chips are better because the "speed" is higher don't have a solid understanding of how chips function.

I think it's a smart business move on Apple's side to finally release an x86 system because it's going to be a sure fire way to capture more of the market. I just hope that Apple doesn't sway to much and starts using sub-par components.

Having OS ten on a dual core dual processor system is going to be outrageous.

Oh, right. I know LG makes a pretty cool one and you can use it with osx.
They're pretty expensive, though.

Re: MAC or PC?

when you get into really serious 3d modeling and animation PCs are the only machines that seem to be around..

Macs are really nice, but you can't mod them the way you can PC's...you can't make those insane beast machines..you have to buy one whole.

For web graphics I'd go with a Mac, because you can be connected to the net with less risk than a PC...

So I'd say my ultimate setup would have an unconnected PC for motion graphics and music, and a Mac for web Graphics...
