Re: © MURAKAMI: 10.29.07 - 02.11.08 @ MOCA

im there too, dope art... but the LV store addition?!?!??....that a mutha f**kin ridiculous. I cant believe the museum is allowing that without any proceeds going to benefit the museum. They say it is a connection between murakami's work and commercial art...but i say its good ol oppurtunism at its worst. the art is amazing tho,...its just too bad that at this age (demographic) , everything we love is taken and raped by the almighty dollar.

Re: © MURAKAMI: 10.29.07 - 02.11.08 @ MOCA

yea, its a bit much. but when you really think about murakamis ideas, i mean his whole thing with hiropon factory was to "make" celebrity/commercial artists like making boy bands, its kind of a weird art in itself

Re: © MURAKAMI: 10.29.07 - 02.11.08 @ MOCA

true that, it is a double edged sword, the idea that art is the act of pushing the envelope creatively by breaking down established beliefs. I think about the original warhol/campbells soup show (in LA none the less ..whoop whoop). Warhol displayed the paintings side by side on a shelf, eluding to the pure commercial nature of the work (s**t warhol was a commercial illustrator way before anyone called it "art"). The soup prints became commoditys rather that pieces of art, they were just items sitting on a cold steel shelf. It's a weird knee jerk reaction I have to commercialization...then i remember that im a commercial artist. It's a weird division to ponder, the balance between artist and business person. The same reason that no art gallerys have cash registers, they have to maintain the illusion that they are a home for fine art...not selling.

More info for those interested

October 28, 2007
© Murakami Exhibit at the MOCA

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Starting tomorrow, one of Japan's biggest artists, Takashi Murakami, is having a gigantic exhibit opening up at the MOCA called © Murakami. Takashi Murakami has been called the 'Andy Warhol of Japan' for his use of appropriating pop culture, in his case, Japanese anime and manga, and then tweaking and turning these mainstream concepts into fine art. Most people know Takashi Murakami through his collaborations with Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs. He helped create Louis Vuitton's multi-colored monogram design, as well as inspiring the "cherry blossom" logo, tiny yellow smiley faces with flower petals around them. His work is some of the most collected in the world, fetching prices into the millions.
The exhibit itself occupies over 35,000 sq. ft., and features over 90 works ranging from painting to sculpture, installation and film, and will be installed in five different sections. The largest section will hold his paintings and sculptures in chronological order, in 10 white rooms in MOCA's warehouse. There will also be a section featuring anew animated film by Murakami titled 'kaikai & kiki', who go on a mission to investigate an underground power source inside a world controlled by artificial intelligence.
There will also be a fully operational Louis Vuitton store as a part of the exhibit. Louis Vuitton has never done anything like this before, which I think shows just how important and well regarded Murakami really has become. The 1,000 sq. ft. store was completely constructed by Louis Vuitton, and will feature brand new products specifically for the exhibit.
I really think this exhibit would be great for anyone, regardless of age or economic standing. The exhibit opens and Monday, and runs until February 11th, 2008. That gives everyone a whole lot of time to see it once, if not multiple times.

Re: © MURAKAMI: 10.29.07 - 02.11.08 @ MOCA

""In the early morning hours in mid-December, an amazing masterpiece of epic pink proportions appeared above the Melrose strip. Not MOCA's Murakami billboard itself, but rather a young curator's fantasy art show: "Murakami/AUGER/REVOK." The spectacle lasted two days, and then it was gone. For most of us who missed it entirely, the billboard became art-opening gossip - already a mythic achievement - and yet another coup pulled off by a couple of L.A.'s most prolific and talented AWR/MSK writers. Luckily, REVOK carried his camera that day, and L.A. Weekly received the photo; we were wowed. So, it turns out, was Murakami, whose Kaikai Kiki studio found the evidence via the Internet and had the billboard surreptitiously removed. Murakami buffing billboards all the way from Japan? On the contrary, according to his representatives, he found it "so wonderful, he had to have it for his collection." Our billboard is now on its way to Tokyo."" By SHELLEY LEOPOLD

Re: © MURAKAMI: 10.29.07 - 02.11.08 @ MOCA

I just went and saw this...and while I was completely floored by the art itself, the space and flow of patrons was far from desirable...

Maybe I am jaded from getting spoiled in NYC for so many years with all of the galleries and museums we have, but cmon MOCA....you advertise all over the state for this show, the online buzz is freaking huge and yet, you staff 2 FUCKING PEOPLE to handle admissions? and then to top it off, the space was what I would liken to a SoHo / Meatpacking District warehouse gallery, MOCA charged $8 and there was no bar or refreshments of any kind and the gift shop was so f**kin packed, I would rather go online and find goodies than waste a hour of my life waiting to "see" if there was anything in there that I would want to spend coin on....

now with that bit of ranting out of the way...lol...(sorry LA, still acclimating to the differences here, so dont hate me...)

the colors and the sheer scale of some of those pieces damn near made me dizzy with joy...my personal fav was the paper illustrations he had to use as guides for the larger pieces, that s**t was ILL...oh yeah, and that giant aluminum sculpture was one of the most trippy things I have ever seen...

Does anyone know if he's using computers for any of the stuff he does? The color work on the paper looked like the images may have been scanned in and color dropped in using photoshop or something...
