animated .gif flyers!

I'm having fun making these, god bless online promotion. it sorta adds the option of animation to print...

and it saves a ton of paper.

Re: animated .gif flyers!

awesome :D

flyers look nice!!

thats a lot of seemingly random blinking though ...

(you go to art center so i know you can take some real critque. )

print design is one thing but animation is an entirely new ball park. now you're dealing with movement. movement has its own composition that exists not only within one flat space of the image, but over a period of time, one frame to the next. just like art, the negative space, the time alotted between keyframes and each movement is just as important as the keyframes and movemnts themselves.

rhythm, timing, and composition of motion is really important in any type of animation. by composition of motion i mean how the motion in your image directs your viewers eye. as the designer/animator your job is to communicate reasons for us to go to this party right ? so you wanna utilize the animation option as a way to guide the eye in the direction you want it to go in the amnt of time it takes to convey the idea. for instance, title blinks for a few, then stops blinking for some breather, then the headliners blink, etc etc. tell your viewer when to look at what.

right now it looks nice.. but is a little bit scattered. its not the composition of the og design, its the composition of your movements and their subsequent timing. it makes the flyer strobe. too quickly, and too much all at once, with nothing feeding into the next.

if you were more specific about when where and how the movement happens i think these animated flyers would be all the more effective.

maybe just domme a bit more control over where, when, how quickly, for how long, and in what order things blink.

:P

Re: animated .gif flyers!

Sorry to not respond sooner, thanks to the feedback from everyone. I totally appreciate the ideas about pacing and timing. The only thing I can say in response is that I actuall am in control of the timing and I dont think that the images are just 'flashing'. The flyers are done in a flat print format and the animations are an added bit (while i do design with the ultimate goal of incorporationg the movement). So, as I was sayin... The nimation is extremely limited, motion is impossible because the files dont save correctly, so everything has to be done in individual layers like a big rotoscope page with visible and invisible layers. The goal with theser animations is not to tell a story but to make people take a second look. If you notice on the 'MUTE vs TRUST flyer the only things flashing are consistant data while the alternating flashing leads the eye thru the lineup. The animation in photoshop is extremely limited, so i am trying to experiment and take full advantage while maintaining a quality final copy. So the jist is that, i spent time on the pacing (which i think is evident by the fact that there is a higherarchy of information that is visually adressed and sorted by priority). I dont want to come off defensive, because its hardly my intent. I just dont understand how it looks like a bunch of random blinking, except for the first one. The pacing was tweeked and it leads the eye thru the flyer, same premise as print and motion.

Re: animated .gif flyers!

I just posted and im looking ath the flyers again, the barbie flyer leads you thru the flyer as well, the only flashing is the idea of the sudden blasts of kids crayon. whic is completely intentional. also to let you know more constraints im working within. no gradients, no transparancys...its seriously me turning layers off and on.

Re: animated .gif flyers!

in basic art composition if you want your viewers eye to focus on a certain point in the image, you have to arrange the rest of the image to feed into that point. meaning perspective, color, contrast, and negative space all organically point to that thing without the viewer even noticing its happening.

the same applies to motion.

if you want the viewer to follow your motions down the line-up, then pause the other blinking while that happens.

i just mean that all the animation is happening all at once, with no breaks for other animation to happen.

its the same thing with conversation, when one person starts talking, the other people quiet down, then when that persons done someone else pipes up.

very simple concepts. would make your animated fliers all the better.

Re: animated .gif flyers!

yea, exactly what amy said is correct.

the names and artists do flash in sequential order, however the logo, and other parts are also flashing at the same time, so it draws your attention away from the order in which the artists names are flashing.

I think amy's idea of pausing the flashing on the logo and other stuff, while the names are being flashed would do wonders in allowing the eye to focus on the pertinent information.

again, i love the design of the flyers, but the way it flashes makes feel like im about to have a seizure.

in fact, im not even looking at the flyer while i type this, but i can still see the glare in my eyes, (kinda like when you look at the sun, you see spots everywhere for a few minutes)

Re: animated .gif flyers!

right on, i get what you guys are saying...sorry if i have come off as defensive. The flashing is something that is requested by the promoters for the sake of promoting in a busy screen on myspace, but subtlety is always the goal. I think in the future i will leave more static information with subtle variations, while using the movement more for the lineup.

Re: animated .gif flyers!

love the work conor..

i have been reading thru this thread and just have to add my two cents..

First off..I understand that this can be annoying to some people, but the fact is, these flyers do get alot of attention.. and from a promotion standpoint the more people that see the flyer the better... And although annoying to some it has totally worked in our favor..

my apologies to anyone that is "annoyed" but the reality is we have been very succesful with these flyers and methods of promotion as literally 100% of the promo we do is online.. either via e-mail, myspace, or forums... so flashy or eye catching flyers are exactly what we want..

I personally think they are amazing and aside from a few negative comments .. we have heard nothing but great things about this artwork and I looove it

be prepared for much much more

Re: animated .gif flyers!

i don't think they are annoying at all.

i just think if the animated parts were more controlled in their timing, or at least seemed more controlled, they would be a lot more effective.

im sorry, i really didn't mean to start this thread off in a debate about the designs.

i think they look really nice

it's just that i have a stupid amnt of art background and its hard for me not to critique.

i think everyone agrees, though, that regardless, conor, and his work, animated or not, kick ass.

no?

Re: animated .gif flyers!

It's not just promoters, clients in general. I have been asked to do some incredibly dumb things in my time as a designer.

But again, I think the designs are great, the flashing is fine. I even like the flashing of the other elements besides the artists names, but its just about the timing of them all.

According to djwhizard ...

i think promoters don't always realize what they are asking for all of the time.

Re: animated .gif flyers!

this is what i said in the original post, what your describing is rotoscoping, creating a slide show of images that create the illusion of time. That is possible to do as Isaid, but I was reffering more to something that would be similar to a shape tween. I used the wrong word when i said impossible, i was just speaking within a specific way. Theres alot of ways to make motion for gifs if youre using digital video frames. heres one i made for my girlfriends myspace. its just a question of how many consecutive frames your willing to input. the images i was dealing with for the flyers were orignal and dont have a range of motion already (as far as making illustrations animate).
