peep this site, its a design site that shows bites by major companies. Apparently one of the worst offendors is urban outfitters. they hire tons of subcontracted design firms who love to steal other peoples shirts. peep or post.

in all honesty, im busy designing s**t for 2009 to really give a f**k of a design i did/like in 2003 getting ridden on by a brand that ive never seen in stores.

I feel u on that, i been noticing that alot lately,.. and biting is really really BAD in the graff scene these days! I notice a gang of graff up everywere, but all the s**t looks the same! It might be clean and colorful, but totally lacks originality and soul, Everyone does that same style/ideas as legends Revok and Saber, & seventh letter/ LAish, I mean, .. I like L.A styles as much as the next guy.... but come on!!! Enuff iz enuff, ... Ive even seen peeps str8 biting O.G TOOMER T.K.O. Back when i was hella into graff and inna "crew", everyone had their own different style, now it seems everyone in a crew trys to paint the same way as there partners,

I could care LEss, when i was living on the streets in LA, i went to a rave and Don Gave me like 3 Tees for 5 $, when i dident know how i was ganna buy food, or do my laundry. That to me is the best thing about PANIC, is the LOVE, I hand Draw all my s**t and thats what takes skill i could care less if some one bites me, just better bite hard cause i want my name in the sky's BOH . as far as the writer Panic One UTI goes he is a real OG that has had major influence over the so cal graffiti scene. big up to a true og he was painting s**t all over town when most of us were in elementery school.

also as far as new school t-shirt design.
you ain't Mexican don't f**k with LA virgen de Guadalupe...
it isn't a cool skate,tattoo motif It is a sacred spiritual symbol, mind you I am not religious but its like rocking the mohamed with the bomb on his head.. have some f**king respect...

just because people that where stars and straps think they they look hard cholo culture isn't cute or funny. As a brown man that grew up in LA I had to deal with all that s**t first hand you guys don't even know what it means...

its a decent design, but if you dont see the similarities, i dont know man. i mean forget my peice for a bit, .. the mike giant one? really?

I could careless about the specific shirt in question. I suppose my comment was directed at the fashion show quality of the "scene"... we were all just lovers of the music one day. Then we became scene-sters... now people go to hang out upstair and be seen at respect and not down stairs to be junglist.
Jungle was ma home away from the status quo.
now we are racing to be assimilated in this plastic ass/MTV worshiping/ultra consumer /non thinking sheeple our youth culture is marketed as.
what happened to us??
I have never felt more disillusioned with any music "scene " I have been down with, as I do now.
what happened to hip hop? what happened to jungle ?
that is really my beef.

what up benjie , im James but everyone knows me as Ouch.... as to the similarities in our shirts the only thing similar is the origin of them (we even decided against printing with discharge because u guys did),,,, as for the mike giant shirt (and this is why I dont like doing graff designs) the hip hop / graff clothing scene is saturated with a bunch of people with the same ideas.. partly because we have had alot of the same experiences being involved in the same subculture,.... im a graffiti writer that likes tattoo art... so is mike giant.. so its safe to say its quite easy for us to come up with the same concepts

i drew the concept for this design years ago because ive always liked the "our lady" depiction but i wanted to flip it so i drew a can and put false idol... to symbolise my love and hatred for graff.... eventually i took out the false idol for the shirt as to not offend catholics...

but bottom line is what sells is what sells.... and im not trying to be broke keep other people happy, if you dont like urban outfitters dont shop there (i dont) its that simple...

and catholicism has nothing to do with being mexican.... mary was hebrew. thats like saying you cant draw the crescent moon and star unless youre arabic....

I have 3 points, but first let me start off by saying, I got mad respect for you and your art Benjie.

Number 1, all artists bite, borrow and steal. Its a fact of life. And I just don't mean in art, musicians are notorious for stealing riffs, melodies, harmonies etc etc. In fact, I have seen many variations on the lady Guadalupe design, so in a way, you yourself Benjie borrowed the idea from someone else. Sure you put your own spin on it, but I'm sure you get my point.

Number 2, there is an old saying that goes, good artists borrow, great artists steal.

Number 3, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

A buddy of mine just finished designing a line of very unique purses, about 3 weeks later they were already knocked off in downtown L.A. A mutual friend said to him on the matter, "Congratulations, you've arrived".

So yea, i dunno. Thats what I have to say about it.

If you can take the praise, you should be able to take the critsism. And any designer worth their weight will be able to answer their critics, especially if they have passion for their original design. This whole thing could be a conversation about design if it wasnt for the outside elements of drama that were interjected.

as far as imagery ownership, i think the debate is more about concept and style rather than a literal ownership of the lady of guadalupe.
