Re: I see the word
It all has to do with the quality of the sound files and the dj behind the console. I too am an Audio Engineer and I have been using Serato for over a year. On big systems. Ive played sets that have gone between vinyl and Serato and have gotten compliments from FOH engineers about how my levels sounded consistant through out the whole show.
I would never play an MP3 rendered at anything less than 320k, and seriously, if you can tell the difference between that and a .wav or a CD (most of the time worse quality than .wav) you should get out of live sound and into mastering professionally.
I cant speak for others and I cant speak for Torq, Final Scratch or any other system's users or products, but if you know sound then you also know that Serato is quality, and if you DJ you know that Rane is quality. You should also understand that a tool is just a tool, and the user determines the final outcome. The mixer is also a tool, and if used improperly it can make a set sound horrible too.
Im not disagreeing that a bad/low quality mp3 sounds bad, and that poor quality is amplified on a large system, but this debate is tired. Vinyl is superior, but not always viable, and just as there are bad quality mp3s etc, there are poorly pressed records that sound equally as bad.
So please, dont lump all timecode users into the same catagory, just as you cant lump all djs into the same catagory. Some suck, and some know what theyre doing.
Dont blame the tool, blame the user.

Re: I see the word
do wut u gotta do, but any dj who wants to take it seriously should have a couple dubplates in their bag. its our job to keep this culture alive, thats wut i like about dubstep because it is geared more towards vinyl/dubplates, which i think dnb/jungle has sadly strayed from.

Re: I see the word
Dude, I would love to play every mp3 I have as a dubplate. I love everything about vinyl and wish it wasnt a dying format... and so damn expensive. Thats why I went with Serato over CDJs...
And honestly, I think the mp3 culture in dubstep is more alive and current than actuall dubplates. I know that alot of them get pressed in the UK, but I know alot of producers off the dubstepforum that have gotten signed due to their mp3s being posted on there. I dont think Serato is anti dubplate, I just think it makes it more accessable to everyone and keeps it moving along faster. I have tracks that are getting released late this summer that I got directly from the producers last winter. The only way that would happen in DnB is if I was a huge UK headliner and playing all the time. Instead, this puts unknowns' tracks in the hands of more giging DJs, thus getting them more exposure, and eventually helping sales.
I know that in other styles of electronic music tracks get taken off soulseek and other illegal download sites, but it seems in dubstep that this happens alot less often and that people are more honest.

Re: I see the word
that record swap is on sunday..sorry bout the confusion.
and i think this discussion about compressed audio is relevant to dubstep, being that mp3 is a lossy format.
from my understanding, that loss is mostly the upper and low ends of the sound spectrum.
low end being bass.
so with dubstep having dynamic bass, the loss, is, of the texture of the bass.
again, these are just my opinions, but,
my opinions mostly come from my 15 years of event production experience. |

Re: I see the word
192kbps mp3s ripped with a good prog like LAME will sound cd quality with low and high intact. 320 kbps are nearly twice the bitrate of a cd so there really is no loss of quality. 320 mp3s or FLACs or ogg played on serato sound twice ass good as cds. |
