comparing SD and LA is like comparing watermelons to cherries....
LA is Huge, almost 3 times the amount of people... 9,948,081 people vs SD (3.15 million)
not to mention... Dubstep is such a niche market, ESPECIALLY in San Diego
if DNB weeklies struggle in SD it's even harder for dubstep...
there's stuff that goes off @ Kava Lounge though...

you know what, 3.15 million people is a LOT
look at San Francisco, less than a million and they're pullin some big shows. granted they didn't do it in a day. its taken time.
Or look at these even smaller cities... Jacksonville Florida, Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania, Indianapolis Indiana, Kelowna British Columbia, Kansas City Missouri, Cincinatti Ohio, Providence Rhode Island.... they have little dubstep scenes going on and are growing. Comparatively, San Diego is much much bigger, its a matter of the effort you put in and building it up - you just gotta start somewhere.
If the dnb scene in SD is struggling, then you need to step outside of that scene and promote to different people.
Start small - the first Smog shows were free parties with locals. just gotta build it up. There are people in SD who like the music, just a matter of linkin em up! |

Re: SAN DIEGO DEAD BEATS
welcome to the underground...
there are plenty of dubstep events or events featuring dubstep, you're just not looking in the right place homie...
That warehouse thing was VERY poorly promoted i will say, but from what I gather was very well attended.
there is a weekly EVERY WEDNESDAY at Kava Lounge that has a good crowd regularly, and is FREE
Also, many DnB events have dubstep guest djs quite often...I played dubstep at DEEP on a few occasions, and have played dubstep at the weekly wednesday Knight Vision at Kadan before a few times.
Did you attend the recent w00t day party at J street marina? There was dubstep there.
On the day party tip, Sunday June 27th, there is a day party at the Airport Lounge in Litlle Italy where there a few of us playing dubstep. I think it's 5 bucks, or free if you simply email the promoter
There was a sunday night weekly at Kadan that specialized in broken beat which also regularly featured dubstep as well as DnB.
Going way back, Pat fron nme produstions attempted to do a monthly called DUBSTEP 101 whish was poorly attended, although heavily promoted. Discouraged, he hasn't promoted any further installments.
there are a few BIG events in the works as i type, featuring major impported talent, as well as locals from SD as well as LA.
keep your ear to the ground...there is plenty going on...

Re: SAN DIEGO DEAD BEATS
you want to support San Diego Dubstep?
buy these tunes:

San Diego Dubstep artist Tapir debuts on Subtrak Records with the S7 EP. This five track EP brings some of the dirtiest and most technical beats to the genre, sure to ignite bassbins from here to Bristol. Each track is unique, while at the same time pays homage to the distinct style that has been sweeping across the globe with untouchable fury. Rounding out the EP is a pristine dub-techno remix of the title track from Christian Bloch.
Available now on www.beatport.com
A. S7
A beautiful yet twisted collections of sounds and beats designed for dancefloor destruction.
B. DEF BEATS
Tapir slows it down a touch with Def Beats, a dark and plodding tune with deep bass and crisp beats.
C. SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES
Sinister sounds and punishing drums combined with warping basslines makes this track a must-have for DJs representing the darkest of dubstep.
D. EARTH
Definitely a tune for the end of the party, Earth combines clean subs, acid lines and cool atmospheres.
E. CATACOMBS
Catacombs is a brutal assault on eardrums and bassbins alike. Strange descending sounds, evil stabs and tough drums keep the track moving at all times.
F. S7 (CHRISTIAN BLOCH REMIX)
Remixing the title track S7 is acclaimed techno artist Christian Bloch. Focusing on the smooth elements in Tapir's tune, Christian creates a minimal masterpiece.
Also look out for SD DJ / Producer KIAL on TZR Carbon records, and watch for SUB PRESSURE RECORDINGS later this summer with tunes from myself, Kial and Kelly D.

Re: SAN DIEGO DEAD BEATS
I re-read the post you're grouchy about, and I should have worded it differently.
I didn't mean there was nothing worth going to, I meant it takes a lot to get me out of the house. The case was the same in d&b, ask anyone who knows me.
I did go to Dubstep 101 in March of last year, which I recall you opened. If you didn't see me there, that's not my problem.
Honestly with that kind of overreaction though, and some of the attitudes in this thread, I don't want to go out...

Re: SAN DIEGO DEAD BEATS
Alright, to put it another way - if you're not packing bodies in the door at your night, you need to give people a reason to care and come. Whether it's the level of talent, the family vibe, et cetera.
Some of the attitudes displayed in this thread and very negative and off-putting, so that's the comfortable vibe out the window right there. And has there been an international headliner in San Diego yet? When I go out in SF and LA comparatively, two successful scenes, both of those elements are there. Something you hear over and over in the review threads for these cities is how friendly and welcoming people are, whereas there's a lot of attacking in this thread.
Make me care about my local scene, please. I'd like to. Gas for roadtrips is expensive. |

I JUST SAW THAT KAVA WAS HAVING VIRUS SYNDICATE,M.R.K 1, AND A COUPLE MORE HEADS.
IT'S HAPPENING...GOTTA WAIT AND SEE IF PEOPLE COME TO THAT...THEN WE CAN SEE WHAT WE ARE UP AGAINST...IF PEOPLE DON'T CARE, FRRROCK DEM.
"DNB" ISN'T THE ONLY GENRE THAT DOES'NT GET PLAY...IT'S HIPPITY HOP,INDIE ROCK,GLITCH,BEATS,REGGAE,DUB......HENCE "DUBSTEP"...IT'S THE MIXTURE OF ALL SOUNDS AND MUSIC..THAT'S WHY WE ARE ALL HERE DEFENDING THE NEXT STEP IN MUSIC.
I CAN SAY THAT I'M A REGGAE HISTORIAN...BUT IT WON'T MATTER BECAUSE I'M INTO DUBSTEP RIGHT NOW...THIS GENRE WILL EVENTUALLY FIZZLE OR MORPH INTO SOMETHING ELSE...IT ALREADY IS.
THE 2006-07 DUBSTEP SOUND IS WAY DIFFERENT THAN WHAT IS GOIN ON NOW...CHECK THE BASS LINES.
EVERYONE IS GOING OVERBOARD WITH THE WOBBLE...I'M STARTING TO GET OVER IT.
"DUB" WILL ALWAYS MAKE SENSE AND JAH WILL ALWAYS BE A PART OF THE ROOTS ANGLE.IT ALWAYS HAS...TIMELESS MUSIC.
"DUBSTEP"...GOING BEYOND THE FUTURE...WAY AHEAD OF IT'S TIME.
I WOULD HATE TO SEE IT GONE TOMMORROW..IT'S LIKE A WORKED OUT PROSTITUTE AT THIS POINT.

Re: SAN DIEGO DEAD BEATS
I usually steer clear of posting on threads where people are getting their feelings hurt, but since this one is about the scene here in San Diego, civic pride and a desire to help improve the scene here compel me.
I attended Dubstep 101 last year. I was so pleased to be listening to the music on a sound system larger than my personal stereo or pc speakers. I was even more pleased to be in a roomful of people who were digging the sound.I was fortunate to meet Tim Staypuft, Mezi and Misk.Since then I've made friends with a bunch more people who love dubstep. I've been to LA a bunch of times and met a lot of the crew up there. I met a bunch of the crew from London's React.FM online and even started doing a weekl y show on the station (my show is on hold at the moment but i hope to be back on very soon). I even have a friend in Tokyo who I talk to on msn all the time. All the aforementioned people have been really nice to me and been very welcoming.
I try to help the scene in San Diego by going out whenever I can afford to pay bar prices for drinks. It's fun! Drink, dance, chat don't over think it. Plus I've met a bunch more cool people who DJ and produce.
The other thing is, going out is helpful to the Scene for a couple of reasons.
First off a lot of live music is subsidized by alcohol sales. If you go out and buy a couple of drinks the bar will do better. If the bar does better, the night will keep happening. If the bar does really well dj's and promoters can even get paid.(records and flyers cost money after all).
Secondly, when you go out and drink (drink a diet coke or something if you don't like alcohol)with people you share interests with, some amazing conversations can happen! Knowledge and experience sharing is such an amazing thing, you never know who you are gonna inspire or be inspired by.
One more thing. Not everyone is everyone else's cup of tea, but that shouldn't stop folks from being civil to each other at the very least.
Respect

Re: SAN DIEGO DEAD BEATS
Oh yeah, I forgot one thing. Invite your friends out too, they don't have to be "part of the scene" most of the people I've turned on to dubstep dig it once they hear it. That will also help the scene in ways that I hope are obvious.
