Could They Have been as big as DAFT PUNK??

had they stayed together...hmmm...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIr38sWpLkQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_m-kpnlFW1A

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThdqCIt4qQw

greatest thing to ever touch dnb imo. master producers/engineers (roni, krust, suv), master dj (die), one of the best mcs in any genre (dynamite), best vocalist (and most forgot outside of Shanie) dnb has ever seen (onallee)....

**that year as the MERCURY PRIZE WINNER they beat out Portishead (i think "Portishead" album) for best album...fukkin' Portishead that is insane for dnb!!! anyways...

Re: Could They Have been as big as DAFT PUNK??

Da Funk came out in 96 and Around the World came out in 97. Daft Punk seems wayy more mainstream. Not that I like them better than Reprazent, that's just what the majority feels - more mundane dance beats.

Re: Could They Have been as big as DAFT PUNK??

^^yeah but it took Daft Punk like 10 years of being together to really gain their incredible LIVE SHOW buzz they have now. Who's to say in 1997 (when this was recorded) that in 10 years time if they (REPRAZENT) didn't stay together as a band they couldn't have been as big? Two different styles of musics but as we see now in these large festival tours and such i think Reprazent would've fit perfectly at a Coachella, Vegoose, selling out like arenas like The Vanguard with ease and maybe even getting to the level of selling out something like The Sports Arena....idk. DnB, Jazz, Hip Hop, Rock, Dance all in one??? I am just thinking aloud...

not to mention all original material...not to mention having guest spots by like Redman, Method Man, Rage...i mean i could see nowadays like MIA or a Nas or a DJ Shadow or a plethora of artists getting down and collabing with them...idk....oh well....

I may be mistaken but I beleive MacDonalds is the #1 restaurant in the U.S. having the most garbage food.

That being said, I doubt the world will ever be ready for dnb,

Maybe you're right and Reprazent could have made it happen but it's probly too late for our genre now. (Hopefully not!)

Re: Could They Have been as big as DAFT PUNK??

^^but the thing i see with like DAFT PUNK is in 1997 they were simply dance music catering to a dance audience, but go to their shows now there are peeps from all walks of life into their stuff. it is not about "can dnb break through", it can with the right artist(s) [i think any music can break thru with the right artists] imo. i personally don't think if Reprazent stayed togehter their entire audience would be just hardcore dnb headz. like i said there are elements of hip hop, jazz, funk, live instruments, singing, soul, a true master of ceremonies, creation on the fly etc.. it is a show! Daft Punk live is a show! Tiesto (hate him or love him) live is a show! what Pendulum is trying to do with their live show is a show! it is about the music but look closely at shows now-a-days and it is also much about the live event. honestly had they stayed around i could see them getting like Ludacris on a beat or Lily Allen or Common or get Slash to guest appear on guitar...idk maybe i have delusional fantasies, but i think the world of music (due to lack of sales and other factors) is much closer in terms of what someone who listens to Jay-Z likes and someone who listens to Ed Banger *shrugs*. Also Reprazent were on a major label thus being able to get folks like Red, rhazel and meth on albums so they had access that other dnb artists don't have now...

well, Subway has surpassed "McDonalds" in number of restaurants... (btw - who can't spell McDonalds, lol - maybe you need an eyecheck, cause no doubt you have seen the sign a jillion times)

I agree with XYZ, had they stayed together, the possibility is there that they could have been as big as Daft Punk. Who knows what "could" have happened, they definitely had a great formula.

But, like he says, its all just wishful thinking... and, how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? The world may never know.

Re: Could They Have been as big as DAFT PUNK??

In 1997 I saw Goldie on the tour for "timeless" where he and his live act opened for Janes Addiction. It was one of the reasons that I went, but it seemed like noone else there was the least bit interested. I think that sometimes we forget how far away we are from the mainstream here in our dnb bubble. Although I will say that if anyone could have pulled it off it was reprezent. Also don't forget about Kosheen, they enjoyed some main stream sucess as well.

p.s. I remember requesting 'brown paper bag' on that old network THE BOX. My parents were so pissed that i used to spend 2.50 on a video...

also, found a review of the goldie spot at janes addiction...

"Opening the show was Goldie. From what I hear he spins "jungle." Whatever. Jungle, techno, ambient, house - it all sounds the same to me. For what it's worth, Goldie's light show was well-done, and I really liked some of the bass effects. Awesome bass. El Niño bass."....

gotta love the dated 'el nino' reference, and you see that the performance was the key to drawing a crowd, even this disinterested reviewer found the elements that dat punk uses appealing (lights, sound fx).

Re: Could They Have been as big as DAFT PUNK??

yeah, i think Reprazent and Goldie's live act were too different animals completely - where Reprazent had a much better chance at becoming embraced by the mainstream than Goldie's live act.

But, I think the important thing to note here is the "El Nino" reference. Sorry for not using the crazy accent thingie.

THE BOX!!!

Hahaha. That thing would play like one video an hour, and i used to just sit there and wait for that one video, and drool over all the videos I wanted to see... because I didn't have 2.50 to pay for a video. Fuck, full movies used to cost less at the time!!!

What a terrible business model. Why am I not surprised I haven't heard about them in the last ten years!!!!

Re: Could They Have been as big as DAFT PUNK??

i agree with Whiz, i think that Goldie's live group and Roni Size are very different. Also i feel that Reprazent (had they continued) would've pushed beyond the "dnb bubble" and could have as well just left dnb behind (i mean who knows what new sounds they would've undertaken). Also "mainstream" defined now, imo, is vastly different then in like 1997. Is Daft Punk mainstream? They get 0 radioplay but can get 30K at arenas in the USA (not in Europe, but the USA). To me if they aren't mainstream, who cares cause they can sell out stadiums on a level equal to Jay-Z or Justin Timberlake. Again NOT saying that Reprazent is Daft Punk or even would've been, but imo their music would've transcended just hardcore dnb heads (i mean there are hip hop elements in it, jazz, funk, soul and so much more)...i mean could they have been as big as say a Thievery Corporation? The Roots? *shrugs*

wishful thinking again...

Not really, they didn't have much more buzz about who they were prior to coachella 2006. They really only had the same following up until that point. The live show they created broke everything wide open and surprised the SHIT out of a lot of people. If any other band with decent, pop-y, mass appeal music like they have, came out w/ a show like that, they'd blow up as well.

^^but the thing i see with like DAFT PUNK is in 1997 they were simply dance music catering to a dance audience, but go to their shows now there are peeps from all walks of life into their stuff.

You obviously weren't at the shows in 1997 then. They had far more radio play in 1997 then they do now. Most of the people at the shows now are simply going based on the live show buzz. In 1997, people were there cause it was the new cool thing, daft punk was the new Offspring =)

I wasn't there in 1997, but i hadn't heard of Daft Punk back then nor had many of my college friends. ----------------------------

Well it seems as though every year radio is programmed that much more so that is not surprising. Every year radio gets formatted that much more every year, but apparently via my friend at KROQ they are getting some run there.

Most of the people at the shows now are simply going based on the live show buzz. In 1997, people were there cause it was the new cool thing, daft punk was the new Offspring =)
---------------------

I am not questioning what reasons people are going to the shows, i am saying peolpe are going period. I mean i think the point of a show is a complete show, no? I guess it will all be seen when they come out with a new cd and see how the sales do comparedly to other major acts now...it wouldn't surprise me if worldwide they could go Gold (500,000 sold) and in the US they sold around 20K-50K. Many major label artists would kill for these numbers now *shrugs*

Re: Could They Have been as big as DAFT PUNK??

that's the whole point though, they haven't been touring for ten years ... before coachella 2006, the last time Daft punk played in the US (and, most of the world for that matter) was in 1997.

Yes, they were releasing albums, and yes, they were doign solo gigs, but "daft punk" as you know it, did not really exist until may 2006. They just BLEW THE FUCKING lid off at coachella, then didn't do another show until NOV 2006 in Miami, then this massive US tour.

That's what I'm getting at, there wasn't constant touring, building a fan base. They just had good records that appealed to a lot of people, but nothing really different.

THEN, out of nowhere they just exploded onto the live scene.

I guess we're getting off topic ...

no, I don't think represent could be anywhere NEAR where daft punk is. _ever_

Why? musical accessibility, and their live show. Yes, seeing some dread locked guys mash keyboards, scratch records n all that are cool ... but, a complete LCD pyramid with robots that bust out music that appeals to 90% of the population sorta trumps that.

Also, Daft Punk has always been VERY visual. Even at the show from 97 @ the Mayan, they had a complete visual set up, with synchronization and all kindsa stuff going on.

Sorta like the difference between Koop, (Reprezent) and Van Halen (daft). They both talented, but Koop's just not "over the top" like that, it's more thinking music.

Re: Could They Have been as big as DAFT PUNK??

They definitely have more "hype" now than they did in 1997. They may have gotten more radio airplay in 1997 - but there is much more excitement about Daft Punk today than ten years ago.

I think the release of Discovery with multiple singles, and music videos (really cool animated ones) definitely helped build steam for them, as well as their following work - so that when they came back with live shows in the US - people were hyped!!!!

But they didn't have this hype in 1997. No way.

Unless Reprazent changed things up and came up with some sort of incredible live visual performance - they would not reach Daft Punk levels.

Re: Could They Have been as big as DAFT PUNK??

Reprazents would of been a really bomb acid jazz band if they stuck togther. The most "show" we would of got out of them might of been a group haircut (sort of like metallica style ) . IMO I think album is a big "EH" . I mean to me it feels like your Dad's DnB . I can only handle so much stand up bass per album . (Fuck I'm going to get flamed on for that one ) . I also think they are more about the music then the show.

Daft Punk well they are a f**king multimedia experience (show, daft club , toys, videos etc etc) . No way reprazents could ( or intended ) of been the DP of DB. Fuck they are so potent the association of Busy P and DP has helped catapult the ed banger label to the top Not saying that’s the whole reason why they blew up , just when you say daft punk you usually hear Ed Banger/Justice right after that. Now thats a following .
